In Novemberthe historic bookstore turned years old. This is a rare feat for any business, let alone one in such a tumultuous industry as books. The year was Shakespeare and Company France and the rest of the world were in Shakespeare and Company midst of the last global pandemic. Sylvia Beach fell in love with Paris as a teen. She then moved to Paris and joined the Red Cross to help with the war effort. She originally hoped to join the Finley Unit as a translator. There she did her work with the Red Cross and with Serbian feminists, but found the work frustrating in the face of overwhelming patriarchy. She witnessed the voices of women authors Virginia Woolf and booksellers Adrienne Monnier, with whom Beach would later have a romantic relationship suppressed, and so took the next step: opening her own bookstore on November 19,at 8 rue Dupuytren. Shakespeare and Company was more than an English bookstore in Paris. It was more than a place to find feminist writings in a patriarchal world. It became a flame attracting the many moth-like expat writers living in Paris. An Shakespeare and Company young man named Ernest Hemingway found his way to Shakespeare and Company in the early s. Scott Fitzgerald, and many other expatriate writers found a haven in Paris with Beach and her store. Shortly thereafter, Beach met James Joyce at a party. At the time, Joyce was already a well-known writer, but had been unable to publish his manuscript for Ulysses. The American magazine The Little Review had been prosecuted for trying to serialize the bawdy manuscript, perceived as too controversial for s readers. Sylvia Beach, who had only been running her Parisian bookstore for three years, offered to publish Ulysses. James Joyce accepted, Shakespeare and Company with Shakespeare and Company that ensured Beach would lose money on each copy printed and Joyce could keep living his cosmopolitan lifestyle. Inwhen Ulysses was finally cleared for publication in the United States, Joyce sold the rights to Random House, giving Beach nothing for her efforts.

Światełka niosące życzenia, marzenia i pragnienia ludzkie. Lecą wysoko w dal, by zanieść je aż do gwiazd. To lampiony szczęścia, małe baloniki o różnych kształtach i kolorach. Mali i duzi, dzieci i dorośli.

Guide to a scholarly pilgrimage in the Latin Quarter in Paris Version Dec. 2019 Donald Broady SEC (Sociology of Education and Culture), Uppsala University www.skeptron.uu.se/broady/sec/, [email protected] The following is a proposal for a walking tour in the 5th and a small corner of the 6th arrondissement in Paris, a part of the city known as le Quartier Latin. I have on many occasions guided similar sightseeing promenades for non-French colleagues and students in the humanities and social sciences. Many of them have been sociologists, which explains the choice of sites to visit. This version of the guide reflects a walk on December 11th, 2019, together with colleagues and ten students enrolled in Uppsala University’s international master’s program in Sociology of Education. Two days earlier we had spent the afternoon at the Père-Lachaise cemetery where we caught some glimpses of the French and Parisian intellectual history by contemplating at the tombs of illustrious men and some women. One aim with the walk through the Latin Quarter was to let the students visit places related to institutions and names that occur in their course pensum, namely in a number of books on the history of the French educational system and on French sociological traditions. To mention a few exemples: É. Durkheim, L’évolution pédagogique en France (1938); P. Bourdieu & J.-C. Passeron, Les héritiers (1964); P. Bourdieu & J.-C. Passeron, La reproduction (1970); P. Bourdieu, Homo academicus (1984); P. Bourdieu, La noblesse d’État (1989); Toril Moi, Simone de Beauvoir (2 ed.
