Note progress in regard to development of the Bedfordshire, Luton and Milton Keynes Enterprise Adviser Network and the Northamptonshire Network. 1 SEMLEP Board: 30th November 2016 Summary 1.1 This paper provides a summary of progress in regard to the Bedfordshire, Luton and Milton Keynes Enterprise Adviser Network and Northamptonshire Network. Bedfordshire, Luton and Milton Keynes Enterprise Adviser Network 2.1 Since the Programme launched in January 2016, 36 schools and colleges have confirmed engagement and signed a Memorandum of Understanding. This figure represents approximately 51% of available schools and colleges (71). 2.2 To date, 38 Enterprise Advisers have joined the Programme. Some Advisers from the same company are choosing to work as a team and, as a result, the Adviser cohort is available to support 30 schools. There is therefore still a need for a further 6 Enterprise Advisers to join the Programme. 2.3 So far, 27 Advisers or teams of Advisers have been matched to a school and 9 have started working with their school to develop a careers strategy. It is a lengthy process, starting with training, Disclosure Barring Service (DBS) checks and preparing the school for engagement ensuring full Senior Leadership Team commitment. 2.4 The immediate priority is to continue to support the Advisers to work with their allocated school and to reach parity in terms of the number of schools and Advisers. 2.5 Appendix 1 provides an updated listing of participating schools and Enterprise Advisers to date by local authority area. Northamptonshire Enterprise Adviser Network 3.1 There is currently a network of 30 schools and colleges engaged on the programme and 28 have been carefully matched to an Enterprise Adviser. 30 schools represent approximately 86% of Northamptonshire secondary schools (35). 3.2 The Enterprise Advisers are continuing to support their school to develop a careers strategy for the academic year and increase employer engagement activity. 3.3 In addition to the strategic role of Enterprise Advisers, the database of ‘inspirer’ volunteers continues to be an important resource for schools to help increase their employer engagement activity. 3.4 Appendix 2 provides an updated listing of participating schools and Enterprise Advisers to date in the Northamptonshire area by local authority. Resources and Network Integration 4.1 Following the LEP merger, while we have been recruiting for new staff, there has been a considerable resource challenge to maintain support across both Networks and achieve growth. 4.2 Recruitment is now complete and 2 full time colleagues will join the team on the 21st November, bringing the Enterprise Coordinator team to 3. One of the new posts will support the Northamptonshire Network on a full time basis and the second post will work alongside the existing Enterprise Coordinator to support the development of the Bedfordshire, Luton and Milton Keynes Network. 4.3 It is recognised that both Networks are at very different stages. Although they will remain as separate Networks due to size, they are keen to explore ways to meet and develop as one group. Both Project Board/Steering Groups have agreed to integrate and will have a first integrated meeting before Christmas. 2 4.4 As many of the Northamptonshire Enterprise Advisers are now in their second year of working with their school, a breakfast was hosted on the 4th November to discuss lessons learned and ways to share best practise with other developing Networks. Key actions included developing case studies, a ‘Road Map’ to support new Enterprise Advisers and ensuring consistent training materials and toolkits. 4.5 Two editions of an Enterprise Adviser Network Newsletter have been developed and distributed to all Enterprise Advisers and schools across the Bedfordshire, Luton and Milton Keynes Network. The Northamptonshire Network will join the distribution for the next December issue and it will be sent to both Networks thereafter during the first week of every month during term time. The Board is asked to: 1. Residents are welcome to all meetings of the council and its committees. During the past year there have been three parish councillor vacancies. Nick Carter had been co-opted in early 2016 and sadly died in December 2016. He had made a strong contribution to the council during his short time with us. His fellow councillors made a donation to the PEPS team at St John’s, Moggerhanger, in his memory. The vacancy will be filled by Lynne Seymour. Alex Chrusiack resigned when he moved out of the area, with James Cross elected in October 2016 to replace him.

    Website: www.HAST-Education.co.uk September 2014 Dear Parents/Carers Attendance: Leave of Absence We are writing to outline the new guidance from Central Bedfordshire Council (CBC) regarding leave of absence for the purpose of family holidays during school term-time (August 2013) and the implementation of Fixed Penalty Notices (September 2014). Good attendance at school encourages good progress. Evidence shows that children with attendance below 90% made on average less than two-thirds of the annual progress made by pupils with attendance above 90%. Please be aware that there is no right or entitlement to term-time leave and any requests for such leave will not, as a rule, be granted. Any decision as to what constitutes ‘exceptional circumstances’ is at the discretion of the Headteacher. The following instances are offered as examples of what might reasonably be seen to constitute ‘exceptional circumstances’: A parent or other close relative of the child has a serious, life-threatening or terminal medical condition and it is believed that the holiday requested may be the last opportunity for the family to experience such an event; A parent is in the armed forces and is shortly due to be posted overseas to a known danger-spot, such as Afghanistan; The family is in an extreme state of crisis and it is considered that the holiday in question may help the family to avert or better deal with this crisis; Fixed Penalty Notices A Fixed Penalty Notice (£60 per parent/carer per child) may be issued when: A pupil is taken out of school during term-time for a holiday which has not been authorised by the school; A truancy patrol carried out by a School Attendance Officer has found a pupil absent from school and the absence has not been authorised by the school; Working with Central Bedfordshire Council Registered Office: c/o Harlington Upper School, Goswell End Road, Harlington, Dunstable, Bedfordshire.

    Pupils to benefit from anti-hate crime programme Further schools in the county will benefit from an anti-hate crime project devised and run by education charity the Anne Frank Trust UK, which has secured further funding from the Bedfordshire Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) Kathryn Holloway. The programme, which has won plaudits from teachers and pupils alike, incorporates a range of dynamic workshops designed to generate debate and discussion on prejudice, hate crime and social responsibility, and promote positive attitudes. Workshops are delivered alongside tours of the Anne Frank Trust's acclaimed exhibition: 'Anne Frank – A History for Today' and Holocaust survivor, and Anne Frank's posthumous step-sister, Dr Eva Schloss MBE, is also invited to share her remarkable story. Commissioner Holloway said: “What really impresses me about the work the Anne Frank Trust will be doing in schools is that this is not a lesson for a day. The Trust creates Anti-Hate Crime Ambassadors to carry forward the message that prejudice and abuse are unacceptable every day of the year." Anti-Hate Crime Ambassadors receive additional training from the Anne Frank Trust and raise awareness widely among their peer group about the dangers to society of prejudice and discrimination. Bedfordshire Police Hate Crime Sergeant James Hart said: “The work of the Trust is so important for the next generation and community of Bedfordshire. We are therefore very encouraged that our partnership is now moving ahead to continue this important work." The project reached more than 2,000 young people in schools and other settings across Bedfordshire during its last round of funding including Mark Rutherford School, The Chalk Hills Academy, Goldington Academy, Vandyke Upper, Stockwood Park Academy, ACE Luton and Fulbrook Middle, in Milton Keynes.
