The Anaconda Plan Questions
Name: edHelper The Anaconda Plan The first shots of the Civil War were fired on April 12, 1861. Within a week, President Lincoln proclaimed a blockade of Southern ports. This was the key to the North's strategy to win the war. The South's livelihood depended on selling its cash crops, mostly cotton and tobacco. If all Southern ports were blocked, it would stop the South's income from its export of crops. It would also keep the South from importing products it needed, including war supplies, medicine, and household goods. The North knew that the South had few factories and couldn't manufacture its own supplies. General Winfield Scott was the commander of the Union Army. His plan to defeat the Confederacy had three main parts: 1) Blockade all Eastern and Southern ports in the Confederate States. 2) Divide the South by taking control of the Mississippi River. 3) Control the Tennessee Valley and march through Georgia to the coast. Scott's "Anaconda Plan", as the press called it, was not well received at the time. Newspapers named the plan after a South American constricting snake. The anaconda kills by surrounding its victim and slowly crushing the life out of it. Newspapers and the public wanted an aggressive plan that would bring a quick end to the war. Scott's plan would take time. It was thought to be too passive. The press said that Scott wanted "to squeeze the South to military death." It was thought that the blockade would be an impossible task for the North to carry out. -

Winter 2001 McMurry, Richard M. Atlanta 1864: Last Chance for the Confederacy. University of Nebraska Press, 2000-08-01. ISBN 803232128 In Atlanta 1864, Richard McMurry ably retraces the familiar scholarly analysis of Confederate command interplay during the Atlanta campaign, in which wartime field tent strategies collided with the long distance meddling of Richmond. Disappointingly, nothing fresh and new rises from McMurry's effort. In the author's account of the depressing and petty quarrelling among Confederate generals and leaders during Atlanta's defense - a saga that features Joseph E. Johnston, John Bell Hood, William J. Hardee, Braxton Bragg, and Jefferson Davis - Johnston takes the biggest "hit." He earns much of the criticism he gets, especially when his style of leadership is compared against the tactical daring of Lee in Virginia. McMurry does his usual scholarly work in this regard and his case is strong. Where Atlanta 1864 suffers most is McMurry's failure to appreciate how command decisions were influenced by topography, undergrowth, other natural landscape features (rivers and small streams), incomplete or incorrect information, and extremely poor roads along the 100-mile route of the Atlanta campaign. -

Summer 2000 Furgurson, Ernest B. Not War But Murder: Cold Harbor, 1864. Alfred A. Knopf, 2000-06-01. $27.50 ISBN 679455175 Ulysses S. Grant's offensive against Robert E. Lee's entrenched Army of Northern Virginia at Cold Harbor on June 3, 1864, summons powerful images. Northern assaults that day stand alongside Ambrose E. Burnside's attacks at Fredericksburg and John Bell Hood's at Franklin as examples of seemingly pointless slaughter of brave but doomed soldiers. Even casual students of the conflict know that Grant admitted as much in his memoirs when he confessed that he "always regretted that the last assault at Cold Harbor was ever made." Despite the well-known drama and gruesome butcher's bill on June 3, historians have devoted relatively little attention to Cold Harbor. It served as the last major battle of the Overland campaign, greatly influenced morale behind the lines in the North, and set the stage for Grant's brilliant crossing of the James River - all attributes that invite scrutiny. -

The rumor was that his mother was in prison for killing a free Black man, and she gave birth to him there. Young Braxton was a smart boy. He managed to get to the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York, and he graduated fifth in the 1837 class. He served bravely in the Mexican War and returned to his hometown a hero receiving cheers from the very people that had maligned him for his family history while growing up Soon, he met the daughter of a rich Louisiana sugar cane plantation owner, Eliza Ellis. They were married, and Bragg decided to leave the army. He resigned and moved to Thibodaux and bought a 1,600-acre sugar cane plantation of his own. He used his superior talents of organization to make the endeavor profitable When Louisiana seceded from the United States, Braxton Bragg Bragg was made a brigadier general in the new Confederate States Army and commanded the Department of West Florida headquartered in Pensacola. Following the battle of Shiloh, he was made a full general and given command of the Army of Tennessee. He led a campaign into Kentucky, and his soldiers fought at the battles of Murfreesboro, Tennessee, and Chickamauga, Georgia. By December 1863, Bragg was removed from army command and given an advisory role in Richmond’s War Department. On May 9, 1865, Bragg was captured near Monticello, Georgia, and upon his release he moved into his brother’s house in Lowndesboro, Alabama. -

A Murder in Kentucky http://civilwar150.longwood.edu In late September 1862, most of the nation’s attention was focused on Kentucky, where Confederate forces under General Braxton Bragg were advancing into the central region of the state, while Edmund Kirby-Smith’s command moved into Eastern Kentucky. As Bragg’s army occupied Bardstown, a Union force under General Don Carlos Buell raced northward from Tennessee in a frantic effort to reach Louisville before the Confederates could occupy that strategically important city. On September 25 Buell’s force arrived in Louisville, beating Bragg in the race to the city. The Federals still had much work to do over the following days in order to complete the city’s defenses in the event of a southern attack. Buell also sent a portion of his force towards the Kentucky capital of Frankfort, in an effort to prevent Bragg and Smith from uniting their commands. Buell eventually moved his troops southward against Bragg, which would culminate in the October 8th battle of Perryville. As the Federals strengthened Louisville’s defenses, a bizarre confrontation would occur between two Union generals that would leave one of the men dead. Union Brigadier General Jefferson C. Davis had been born in 1828 and served in the Mexican War, where he earned a promotion to lieutenant. At the outbreak of the Civil War he took part in the defense of Fort Sumter, before leading units at the battles of Wilson’s Creek and Pea Ridge and subsequently being assigned to the command of Major General William Nelson in Kentucky. -

JULY 1863: TURNING POINT OF CIVIL WAR BY DANIEL KOCH Photo credit/VICKSBURG NATIONAL MILITARY PARK A Grand Illumination was July 3 at Vicksburg National Military Park with luminaries placed at state monuments representing the number of total casualties from that state. Because Ohio never erected one large state memorial an Ohio regimental monument was chosen to host the 1,313 luminaries representing total casualties at Vicksburg from the Buckeye State. SANDUSKY July 1863 is arguably the most important month in American history. Others may argue July 1776, when this nation was founded, or June 1944, when the Allies saved the world. The latter are indeed valid arguments. This country, however — founded in 1776 with the institution of slavery intact — had to be molded into “a more perfect union” than that spoken of in the preamble to the United States Constitution, written in 1787. And the nation that went to war in December 1941, eventually landing at Normandy in 1944, could not have become world power it is today if July 1863 had turned out differently. If the Union victories of July 1863 had instead become Confederate victories, there is a good chance the United States we know today would be under at least two flags. Twin Union battlefield victories in the third summer of the Civil War at Vicksburg and Gettysburg put the first nails in the coffin of the Southern Confederacy. A third and often- forgotten campaign in Tennessee that summer, the Tullahoma Campaign, may not have been as bloody as the other battles in Mississippi and Pennsylvania, but it had the effect of maneuvering a Confederate Army out of Middle Tennessee and capturing the strategic railroad hub of Chattanooga. -
Chapter One: the Campaign for Chattanooga, June to November 1863
CHAPTER ONE: THE CAMPAIGN FOR CHATTANOOGA, JUNE TO NOVEMBER 1863 Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park commemorates and preserves the sites of important and bloody contests fought in the fall of 1863. A key prize in the fighting was Chattanooga, Tennessee, an important transportation hub and the gateway to Georgia and Alabama. In the Battle of Chickamauga (September 18-20, 1863), the Confederate Army of Tennessee soundly beat the Federal Army of the Cumberland and sent it in full retreat back to Chattanooga. After a brief siege, the reinforced Federals broke the Confeder- ate grip on the city in a series of engagements, known collectively as the Battles for Chatta- nooga. In action at Brown’s Ferry, Wauhatchie, and Lookout Mountain, Union forces eased the pressure on the city. Then, on November 25, 1863, Federal troops achieved an unex- pected breakthrough at Missionary Ridge just southeast of Chattanooga, forcing the Con- federates to fall back on Dalton, Georgia, and paving the way for General William T. Sherman’s advance into Georgia in the spring of 1864. These battles having been the sub- ject of exhaustive study, this context contains only the information needed to evaluate sur- viving historic structures in the park. Following the Battle of Stones River (December 31, 1862-January 2, 1863), the Federal Army of the Cumberland, commanded by Major General William S. Rosecrans, spent five and one-half months at Murfreesboro, Tennessee, reorganizing and resupplying in preparation for a further advance into Tennessee (Figure 2). General Braxton Bragg’s Confederate Army of Tennessee was concentrated in the Tullahoma, Tennessee, area. -
