I remember sitting at a table in the bar of a clubhouse after a Ten Ways to be More Productive 12 GCSAI golf event and with me at the table there was a club I The End of Greenkeeping General Manager, a Course Superintendent (not from the same club as the General Manager) and an up and coming greenkeeper (from yet another as we Know It 14 club). I did not choose the people I was sitting with, in fact I sat alone for a while, and as Irish Greenkeepers Visit time went by these people arrived and asked if they could sit with me. It was a meeting Gleneagles 16 of chance, and, as usual, it started off with some small talk on the recent weather and how nice the course was. By the time it was time to leave we had engaged in many It's Good to Talk When interesting topics. We discussed how difficult it must be for young greenkeepers Diseased or Stressed 18 to make it to the top of their profession in Ireland, not because of the recession or economic reasons, but mainly due to the fact that most Course Superintendents in Volunteering in the US 22 Ireland are under the age of 50 and, if nature takes its course, will probably not retire for another fifteen to twenty years. As you can imagine the young and upcoming Winter Machine Maintenance 26 greenkeeper was all ears as this topic was discussed. Then the General Manager talked about how he saw the role of the Course Superintendent and his staff and what is said Course Feature: about him at club meetings (mostly favourable I must add). The Course Superintendent Castle Golf Club 28 was all ears here. We finished up talking about the lack of full time sports turf education and training in Ireland. What Regional Round-up 34 a learning curve for me this chance meeting of four people coming together Maintaining Artificial Pitches 40 for an hour. It made me think of the many people Understanding Anthracnose 42 that are involved in the sports turf industry in Ireland who say “Why would I President's Cup 44 want to join the GCSAI? Sure I don’t play golf so what’s the point?” Trade News 50 Those of you who know me will testify to my golfing skills. I can hit shots out You don’t have to be a good golfer to of water, bend balls around trees and be a member of the GCSAI see the wonderful views that exist in the out of bounds areas but I’m still baffled as to why I am not voted Golfer of the Year. It is only when I get changed and walk into the clubhouse that I learn more about the turf industry (and where I went wrong out on the golf course). What a mix of different people I bump into at these golf outings, agronomists; sales reps; greenkeepers; football groundsmen; and race track managers. This networking of so many people is invaluable. One learns so much at golf outings. Getting involved in an organization such as the GCSAI can indirectly open up many doors. Our analysis suggests that choking under pressure from high-stakes non-monetary rewards is behind the underperformance. This implies that high stakes non-monetary rewards can create meaningful pressure on individuals and lead to worse performance, a distinct issue that has yet to be adequately examined. These findings come from an examination of the behavior of top US golfers competing to earn a place on the US Ryder Cup team via their performance in PGA Tour tournaments with differing allocations of Ryder Cup qualifying points. Keywords: Competition, non-monetary incentives, high stakes, choking, performance, risk-taking, intimidation The Burden of Glory: Competing for Non-monetary Incentives in Rank-order Tournaments Abstract: In an environment in which elite, highly-paid professionals compete for non- monetary rewards, we find evidence of underperformance. • Promoting Scotland As the Next Host of the Ryder Cup
PROMOTING SCOTLAND AS THE NEXT HOST OF THE RYDER CUP Background Scotland is the next Host Nation of The Ryder Cup, when the matches will be played at Gleneagles from the 26th to the 28th of September 2014. To make the most of this opportunity at the 2012 Ryder Cup at Medinah a Team Scotland approach was adopted to deliver an extensive programme of activity designed to ensure Scotland received the maximum benefit from its presence at that event. The programme was led by VisitScotland and its EventScotland team, and included representatives from the Scottish Government as well as Scottish Development International. The team also worked closely with key representatives from The Gleneagles Hotel, Perth & Kinross Council, Tayside Police and Ryder Cup Europe as part of the planning process for the 2014 event. The Prize The 2012 event in Chicago was the last Ryder Cup to take place before the Gleneagles matches in 2014, and provided a major opportunity to promote Scotland in North America, one of our most important markets, which attracts around 400,000 visitors and a spend of around £300m every year. Golf is also a crucial market for Scottish tourism, bringing in around £220m every year to the Scottish economy. The 2014 Ryder Cup is expected to bring an economic benefit to Scotland of around £100m during the week of the event alone. Our Aims Our aims in attending the event in Medinah were to: Represent, and raise the profile of Scotland on the global stage at one of the world’s biggest sporting events; Emphasise the position of Scotland as the Home of Golf, and as a country with a strong reputation for hosting successful world class events; Commence the handover to Scotland as the next Host Nation for the Ryder Cup; Observe and learn from the hosting of this year’s event, to inform final preparations and planning for 2014; and Engage with specifically targeted business, tourism and golf contacts in the USA; Ministerial Attendance The 2012 Ryder Cup was attended by the First Minister and the Minister for Commonwealth Games and Sport.
