ALL-AMERICAN AWAAZ WHO WE ARE The Association of South-Asian (ASA) is a non-profit organization founded in April 2016 by a team of alumni from various South Asian a cappella groups across the country. The organization aims to build a nationwide network that would unite the a cappella community and strengthen bonds not only between teams and universities but also between the South Asian and contemporary a cappella circuits.

WHAT IS SOUTH ASIAN A CAPPELLA? South Asian A Cappella is commonly described as “ meets Pitch Perfect.” The musical style itself establishes its unique identity by incorporating influences from both Eastern and Western cultures, carefully fusing the two in each performance piece. The genre is a true testament to diversity and unity, as it combines influences from around the world to collectively push the boundaries of music.Over the last decade, contemporary a cappella overall has evolved at an exponential rate, gaining immense mainstream popularity with the advent of TV shows and motion pictures such as Glee and the Pitch Perfect series. This growth has also spread to the South Asian community, beginning with the collegiate group Penn Masala at the University of . Formed in 1996 from the long tradition of men’s Ivy League A Cappella, Penn Masala ignited a new genre that currently holds over 50 groups. These ensembles compete nationwide at multiple established competitions throughout the academic year and promote South Asian musicianship and leadership by recording and publishing music regularly. WHAT WE DO

The Association of South Asian A Cappella (ASA) is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization focused on the growth and cultivation of this unique and vibrant performance art. We strive to be the foundation for which the community is built by developing resources and providing a platform for South Asian a cappella artistry. Our mission to foster growth within the community is developed through various initiatives such as workshops to hone skills with experts who can teach, provide knowledge, and expand horizons. Our mission goes beyond just a collegiate network; we aim to provide tools to South Asian a cappella alumni so they can pursue careers in the arts as well as local outreach through the education system to provide awareness and guidance to budding young South Asian artists. We strive to accomplish our mission through initiatives such as our flagship event, All-American Awaaz (A3). A3 brings together the nation’s best South Asian a cappella groups at the collegiate level to compete for the prestigious title of national champion. As a result of this success, ASA is proud to host the fourth annual championship in April 2020 with seven regional feeder competitions. For the teams, All- American Awaaz presents a huge opportunity to gain exposure by performing in front of a vast audience and a panel of highly qualified judges. The competition brings together musicians from around the country with the goal of unifying the a cappella circuit. Below is a listing of the competitions that allow groups to qualify for the nation championship, All-American Awaaz.

The group has been hugely successful and approved 500 new members within the first month alone, with continued growth. Today, the group has over 1,250 members with representation across over fifty universities. In addition, the organization created a national group directory that contains contact information for all the groups in the community. It is easily viewable to anyone in the NDA group, resulting in exciting opportunities for collaboration. For more information about NDA, please visit www.desiacappella.com.
