Commodores Rock! Following was a magnifi- cent, frenetic Jerry Lee Lewis-like arrangement of Great Balls of Fire with Swanson singing and rocking on the keyboard. Under the Hill from left to rt.: Nate Weimer, Blake Wanger (partially hidden), Ben Wanggaard, Tony Lapakko, Matt Richards, David Bechard, and Paul Paddock. When formed a year or two ago, rather on the spur of the moment, they selected 35 and Under as their name. On re- thinking, Under the Hill offers an air of subtle mystery that seems fitting. The group got its start early this century as an octet, an idea first proposed by the late and loquacious prime mover and Happy Wanderer, Joe Houser (“Valderee, valdera … ” in one key or another). It really feels like it’s been a long winter of discontent with news of more venue closures almost weekly. The latest to go at the end of February was the Pig and Drum in Worcester which has been prominent on the local music seen for a few years now. Thanks to the efforts of landlady Rachel Cale bands from out of town loved playing there. We don’t yet know the long term fate of the Boar’s Mar 2017 Head in Kidderminster since Sid & Sandra announced they’re moving on in the summer, But I don’t think it’ll be the last to go. With business rates rises due very soon and so many people feeling the pinch, these places are really suffering. There are SLAP MAGAZINE rumours of other venues around the counties who may also be Unit 3a, Lowesmoor Wharf, shutting their doors soon.     ABSTRACT RICHARDS, ANDREW LATIMER. Experimental Investigations into the Targeted Delivery of Microspheres in Radioembolization Therapy. (Under the direction of Gregory D. Buckner). The evolution of liver tumor treatment has enabled marked improvements in patient survivability and quality of life. In recent years, radioembolization (RE) procedures, in which radioactive microspheres are introduced directly into the hepatic vasculature, have provided promising results for the treatment of liver tumors. These procedures combine the efficacy of radiation therapy with the selective delivery of transarterial embolization. Despite the well documented advances, however, the lack of a direct tumor-targeting strategy has limited the widespread adoption of RE. Recent work employing computational fluid-particle modeling of the hepatic arteries has suggested that optimized release locations exist which maximize 90 Y microsphere delivery to targeted artery branches. Studies examining this strategy have been primarily computational in nature; no experimental validation has been presented demonstrating directed microsphere delivery in a hepatic artery model. Furthermore, limited data has been published regarding the physical properties of clinical 90 Y RE microspheres most relevant to the simulation model. This dissertation details experimental investigations examining the methods and materials used in this targeting strategy. First, a hepatic artery circulation model is constructed to match simulation-specified flow conditions. Controlled microsphere injections are performed at various locations within the model and the resulting branch distributions are compared with those predicated computationally. For the first time ever, selectable targeting is demonstrated in a physical hepatic model. Achieving predictable targeting in a controlled environment lays the groundwork for adapting this technique for eventual clinical application.
