  • Small Team, Big Licence SMALL TEAM
Interface Small team, big licence SMALL TEAM 44 / wfmag.cc Interface Small team, big licence SMALL TEAM BIG LICENCE Inside the tiny studios making games based on giant Hollywood properties WRITTEN BY AARON POTTER hile there’s definitely an upside to making a game based on a highly revered film, TV, or comic book, for the longest time, development teams working on licensed video games did so knowing that it came with a certain stigma attached. Known in industry circles for having much tighter production schedules and deadlines, games based on recognisable properties have long been synonymous with poor quality and a broad streak of cynicism. Of course, not all licensed games are bad. Rocksteady’s Arkham series gave players the thrill of being Batman; 2014’s Alien: Isolation recreated the aesthetic of Ridley Scott’s 1979 movie in painstaking (and chilling) detail, and the recently released Fallen Order has been praised in some quarters as the best Star Wars game from EA to date. But for every one of these home runs, there’s a dud like the assorted Iron Man tie-ins from 2008, or the widely derided Aliens: Colonial Marines, released in 2013. Whether they’re good, bad, or indifferent, triple-A licensed games will always exist in some capacity. But as we enter an era of gaming where more and more creatives are breaking away to form smaller studios, we’re now seeing what can happen when tiny teams get to work on some of the most famous IPs in the world. One such team is Illfonic, a Colorado-based developer currently working on the PlayStation exclusive Predator: Hunting Grounds, due out later this year.

  • Ridley Scott Is Re-Engineering the Iconic Xenomorph for an Alien Prequel/Sequel That’S Taking the Sci-Fi Horror Series Back to Its Fright-Filled Roots
ON SET 72 Nearly four decades after bursting onto the scene, Ridley Scott is re-engineering the iconic xenomorph for an Alien prequel/sequel that’s taking the sci-fi horror series back to its fright-filled roots. Total Film takes an express elevator to hell – aka the Sydney set of ALIEN: COVENANT – and comes face to face with a perfect organism. WORDS JORDan FARLEY TOTAL FILM | JULy 2017 ALIEN: COVENANT 73 JULy 2017 | TOTAL FILM MAKING OF idley Scott remembers Shepperton Studios like he’s just woken up from hypersleep. He remembers making movie history with Alien in 1979. Above all, he remembers his idle hands. How his own digits doubled for the finger-like legs of the facehugger twitching inside the egg. How he drew the film’s storyboards while studio suits ummed and ahhed over the budget. How he would improvise and improve set-ups until seconds before shooting, all because sitting around 74 – a common experience on film sets – would drive him “crazy”. If Ridley Scott’s own Alien memories are inextricably associated 78-year-old filmmaker’s mind for half nightmare and bland crossover franchise with idle hands, it’s only right that the his life. “Did it come about by accident… fodder. Scott famously returned to xenomorph itself, as revealed in Alien: or was it by design?” the series he launched in 2012 with Covenant, should be the product of a One thing’s for certain: intelligent Prometheus, an ambitious but flawed devil’s workshop. “Why on earth would design has rarely figured into the ad hoc prequel about the origins of humanity anyone make such a creature, and to evolution of the Alien series.

  • Convergence Culture Reconsidered
Reconsidering Transmedia(l) Worlds Nicole Gabriel, Bogna Kazur, and Kai Matuszkiewicz 1. Introduction “Any thoughtful study of contemporary transmedia must start with the vital caveat that transmedia is not a new phenomenon, born of the digital age.” (Jason Mittell 2014, 253; emphasis in the original) To begin with, we would like to agree with the general sentiment of Mittell’s statement: ‘transmedia,’ which Mittell seems to use as an abbreviation of the term ‘transmediality,’ is not a new phenomenon. But can it really be a mere coincidence that these two terms and other related concepts such as ‘transmedial worlds’ have been introduced and extensively discussed in academic discourses since the early 2000s, less than ten years after the introduction of home computers and the inter- net to numerous private households, and at about the same time as the Web 2.0 came into existence? We do not think so. Rather, we believe that the increasing research interest of media studies in these phenomena and the various concepts used in this research field are indicators of a fundamental change in (trans)media culture that is a result of the emergence of digital technologies as well as their mas- sive influence on our everyday lives. The aims of this paper are to take a closer look at the terminology used to de- scribe different phenomena in the field of transmedia studies, to differentiate be- tween these terms and concepts and render them more precise, and to put trans- media(l) worlds into a historical context through the analysis of three case studies: the transmedial universe of Sherlock Holmes, the Alien saga, and the transmedial world of The Legend of Zelda.

  • Movie Review – the Goddess of Pandora
Movie Review – The Goddess of Pandora By: Richard B. Sorensen September 1, 2010 [email protected] www.richardsorensen.com www.unholygrail.net Neytiri of the Na’vi I recently watched the DVD “Collector’s Special Extended Edition” of the movie Avatar, by James Cameron. He is one of my favorite directors, having made Terminator I (which I consider to be one of the best action/adventure movies ever made), Titanic, and Aliens. Avatar is a science fiction/fantasy/adventure flick set on the planet of Pandora, a moon in the Alpha Centauri star system. In many ways this movie surpassed all of Cameron’s others in a brilliant combination of human acting, CGI effects, military battles, and a convincing love story between a human man and an alien woman. But what interested me most were the theological aspects of the movie. The goddess of Pandora is named “Eywa,” perhaps taken from “Ewha Womans University” in South Korea. As the inevitable lawsuits have piled up against Avatar, one Korean satirist wrote that even the school was trying to sue for a cut of the proceeds. 1/8 Eywa is a new age goddess, essentially a female version of the Druidical gods of the Celts; a nicer and more caring earth/nature goddess that benignly (for the most part) presides over a planet where virtually all of the life forms are somehow interconnected in a huge web of life. The people of Pandora, called the “Na’vi”, have long ponytails, and can connect with animals or plants by inserting the shaggy end into receptors on the animal or plant.

THE PERFORMING MOTHER: MATERNAL ETHICS BEYOND EMBODIMENT by CHARLES HICKS Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of The University of Texas at Arlington in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY THE UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS AT ARLINGTON May 2015 Copyright © by Charles Hicks 2015 All Rights Reserved ii Acknowledgements I am indebted to the plethora of individuals that have made this work possible. My committee – Penelope Ingram, Tim Richardson, and Neill Matheson – has worked tirelessly in order to encourage the progress of this project at all stages. Penelope Ingram especially has fostered an environment of intellectual growth throughout and offered invaluable advice at all junctures. As a mentor she has surpassed all imaginable expectations and, as a scholar, has provided an exceptional and admirable model of academic prowess. The exigence of this project and my academic thought lies primarily in the three classes of hers that I was fortunate enough to attend and her work, Signifying Body offered me the opportunity to find my voice in a complex and challenging discourse. Peers and mentors from within the English Department at the University of Texas at Arlington have helped tremendously with the completion of this project. It would be remiss not acknowledge the tremendous guidance provided by Bruce Krajewski, whose insight and experience were invaluable. Bethany Shaffer provided not only kindness during my most stressful times, but encouragment that was essential. In addition, Peggy Kulesz’s support to not only this project, but my academic career in its entirety, cannot be quantified. There are few people that have had a more profoundly positive influence on my life.

  • Alien: La Cronologia
