Timiskaming Health Stats Mental Health in the Timiskaming Health Unit Area Released July 2014 Released February 2014 Introduction This report presents data on overall perceived mental health, stress, anxiety and mood disorders. Mental health is vital to overall health and well being. Individuals with good mental health experience more positive family and social relationships and greater happiness and life satisfaction.1 Perceived mental health This section presents the percentage of Timiskaming residents aged 12 About this indicator years and older who perceived their mental health as very good or excellent. Timiskaming Health Stats - Mental Health in the THU Area 1 Mental health over time Figure 2 shows the percentage of people who rated their mental health as very good or excellent from 2003 to 2011/12. Each year Timiskaming’s rate was statistically lower than both Northeastern Ontario’s and Ontario’s with the exception of 2003, where there were no statistical differences found. When looking at the trends over time, there were no statistical differences in perceived mental health over time in both Timiskaming and Northeastern Ontario. Rates in Ontario remained relatively stable with small fluctuations over time. However, this trend was not seen in Northeastern Ontario as there were no statistical differences found between any age groups. There were several statistical differences found between age groups in Ontario: a higher percentage of youth aged 12-19 years had very good or excellent mental health compared to those over the age of 35 years. Similarly, a higher percentage of adults aged 20-34 years reported very good or excellent mental health compared to those aged 45 years or older. However, there were differences in both Northeastern Ontario and Ontario whereby as income increased, the percentage of people who perceived their mental health as very good or excellent increased. More specifically, in Northeastern Ontario, 44.8% of people in the lowest income group rated their mental health as very good or excellent, compared to 69.4% and 78.6% in the middle and highest income categories, respectively. In Ontario, 56.3% of people with low-level income rated their mental health as very good or excellent, compared to 66.5% and 76.7% of those in the middle and highest income category, respectively. It includes persons whose mother tongue is French, as well as those whose mother tongue is neither French nor English but who have a particular knowledge of French as an official language and use French at home. In 2011-12, there were no statistical differences between Francophones and non-Francophones in self reported mental health. The percentage of Francophones who perceived their mental health as very good or excellent in Timiskaming was 68.9%, in Northeastern Ontario was 73.5% and Ontario was 72.7%.
