Farber University Archives and Special Collections Department, Brandeis University ^ Return to Table of Contents Biographical or Historical Information Hugo Oehler, born in 1903, was an American Communist leader. In the 1920s, Oehler worked as a successful trade union organizer of textile workers in the South and of mine workers in Colorado. After becoming a declared Trotskyist in 1930, Oehler was elected to the National Committee of the United States Trotskyists in 1931. He was later expelled from the organization for criticizing the "French Turn," or the entering of Trotskyists into the Socialist Party. Oehler soon became a co-founder of the Revolutionary Workers League, or RWL. In 1937, Oehler went to Spain to observe, evaluate, and direct the efforts of radical left-wing parties in the Spanish Civil War. During his time in Spain, he was instrumental in establishing communication between the RWL and Spanish revolutionaries. His pamphlet, Barricades in Barcelona describes the armed clashes in May 1937 between the Barcelona police and the revolutionaries and workers. The pamphlet urges the Spanish left to develop a unified and informed Marxist party in order to advance the proletarian revolution. After the May struggles, Oehler was arrested and expelled from the country. After WWII, the RWL declined and disappeared by the 1950s. Throughout the rest of his life, Oehler faded from politics and died in 1983 at the age of 80. - Page 3- Hugo Oehler collection11.MWalB02500 ^ Return to Table of Contents Scope and Contents This collection consists of letters of correspondence, both to and from Hugo Oehler; reports on the Spanish Civil War with the majority written by either Hugo Oehler or Russell Blackwell; a translation of the Boletin Interior; and numerous periodical materials including newspaper clippings. Many of the letters are written from Rosalio Negrete (various sources show that this was the Communist Party name of Russell Blackwell) in Spain to Hugo Oehler in the United States. The letters relay the development of the Workers' Party of Marxist Unification (POUM) and other revolutionary groups in Barcelona. Other letters, written by Oehler, are addressed to the members of the Revolutionary Workers League (RWL) and assess the development of the international workers' movement. The letters in this series focus mainly on professional matters but also include personal information such as travel details and daily life.     Autonomist Marxist Theory and Practice in the Current Crisis Brian Marks1 University of Arizona School of Geography and Development [email protected] Abstract Autonomist Marxism is a political tendency premised on the autonomy of the proletariat. Working class autonomy is manifested in the self-activity of the working class independent of formal organizations and representations, the multiplicity of forms that struggles take, and the role of class composition in shaping the overall balance of power in capitalist societies, not least in the relationship of class struggles to the character of capitalist crises. Class composition analysis is applied here to narrate the recent history of capitalism leading up to the current crisis, giving particular attention to China and the United States. A global wave of struggles in the mid-2000s was constituitive of the kinds of working class responses to the crisis that unfolded in 2008-10. The circulation of those struggles and resultant trends of recomposition and/or decomposition are argued to be important factors in the balance of political forces across the varied geography of the present crisis. However, his features in the annals of Trotskyism are far away from being homogeneous, and it is a very truism that a man like Cannon must almost inevitably have caused much controversy. Undoubtedly being America's foremost Trotskyist and vigorously having coined the SWP, he on the one hand has been continuously worshipped and often monopolized by various epigones whereas on the other hand Trotskyist and ex-Trotskyist dissidents have considered him an embodiment of petrified orthodoxy or workerism or ultra-Leninist factionalism.

Dear comrades: It is almost nine years since we together broke definitely with the counter-revo- lutionary wing that once led the Communist Party.Our split was supposed to repre- sent a Marxian reaction to the opportunist line that brought the world proletariat from one defeat to another.Although we broke together from the Stalinist-Bukharin line ideologically and organizationally,westood apart from you for the reason that ideologically we were part of the left faction of the Italian Communist Party which fundamental documents are to be found in the Roma thesis.These documents were a contrast to all the political past of Cannon and Shachtman who at that time only bor- rowed from the Russian opposition. Under the leadership of Leon Trotsky the Inter- national Left Opposition from the beginning stood for the reform of the Communist International misjudging therefore,the fundamental reason that brought the oppor- tunist to the head of the C.I. That fundamental reason was represented by the many defeats of the proletariat, upon whichdefeats the counter-revolution found strength.
