The central pursuit of our work as an organization is to sustain the diversity of contemporary performing artists while celebrating their contributions to culture. We acknowledge, amplify and support artists through major presentations, commissions and creative development initiatives. Our programs offer audiences a direct connection to the ideas, perspectives and concerns of living artists. Through the lens of dance, theater, music, literary arts, digital media arts and collaborative disciplines, informed by diverse racial and cultural backgrounds, artists and audiences come together in our theaters and public spaces to explore new ways of seeing that expands our understanding of the world we live in now.

MESSAGE FROM THE ARTIST My heart hastens with gladness to be with my compadres again to make music. This year of COVID has been a trial and a revelation. A time of reflec- tion and resourcefulness. We hope that the offering we bring to you from this stage will help to console your losses, and fill the void of your loneliness. Above all, we hope to lift you up and inspire you to go forward in love and light.

Yours in the music, Charles Lloyd

“Follow the career of Charles Lloyd, and you see a map of great across half a century. His shows, full of momentum and intuition, perfectly represent the idea that the best jazz needs to be experienced live.” ~The New York Times

“He’s expansive in his musical discourse yet without a wasted note.” ~Wall Street Journal

“Jazz improvisation as complex and far-reaching as the Lloyd quartet had to offer can be a daunting listening experience. … The listener is taken on a journey through gravity-less improvisational space. To the credit of Lloyd and his players, that journey was illuminated by one musical enlightenment after another.” ~Los Angeles Times ABOUT THE ARTISTS Charles Lloyd, an NEA Jazz Master, and recipient of the prestigious French honor of the “Ordre de Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres,” is also an inductee in the Memphis Music Hall of Fame. The critical consensus is that Lloyd has never sounded better. The depth of his expression reflects a lifetime of experi- ence. Lloyd has a legendary history in the music world, and could certainly be in a position to slow down and rest on his laurels. But looking back has never been of great interest to this tender warrior; “Go forward,” is his motto, as he keeps shifting to a higher, well calibrated gear. His concerts and recordings are events of pristine beauty and elegance, full of intensely felt emotion and passion that touches deep inside the heart. Noteworthy include Fish Out of Water, Canto, Voice In the Night, The Water Is Wide (featuring Brad Mehldau, John Abercrombie, Larry Greadier and ) and Sangam with Zakir Hussain and . Lloyd formed a new group called the Marvels featuring Bill Frisell on guitar, , Eric Harland and on steel guitar. They released in 2016 (Blue Note Re- cords) and their most recent , (Blue Notes Records), released in June 2018 is a collaboration with the great American singer and poet, . In 2020 released a special limited edition box set of Lloyd’s 80th birthday concert in his hometown Santa Barba- ra, Charles Lloyd, 8, Kindred Spirits.

Gerald Clayton searches for honest expression in every note he plays. With harmonic curiosity and critical awareness, he develops musical narratives that unfold as a result of both deliberate searching and chance uncovering. The four-time Grammy-nominated pianist/composer formally began his musical journey at the prestigious Los Angeles County High School for the Arts, where he received the 2002 Presidential Scholar of the Arts Award. Continuing his scholarly pursuits, he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Piano Performance at USC’s Thornton School of Music under the instruction of piano icon Billy Childs, after a year of intensive study with NEA Jazz Master Kenny Barron at The Manhat- tan School of Music. Clayton won second place in the 2006 Institute of Jazz Piano Competition. Anthony Wilson, guitarist and composer, is known for a body of work that moves fluidly across genres. The son of legendary jazz trumpeter and bandleader Gerald Wilson, his musical lineage has deeply influenced his creative trajectory, compositional choices, instrumental groupings, and the wide-ranging twelve album discography that blooms out of them. His first album — Anthony Wilson (1997) — featured a nine-piece “little big band” and received a Grammy nomination for Best Large Ensemble Jazz Recording. Albums include Goat Hill Junket (1998), Adult Themes (2000), Power of Nine (2006), Our Gang (2001), Savivity (2005), Jack of Hearts (2009) and Campo Belo (2011), a collection of original instrumental songs recorded in São Paulo, Brazil. Traveling into, through, and beyond genres, Frogtown (2016) marked a turning point for Wilson as a composer and his debut as a singer. Frogtown sets the stage for Wilson’s latest, Songs and Photographs (2018). Wilson was awarded the Thelonious Monk Institute International Composers’ Award in 1995. He has also received commissions from Jazz at Lincoln Center, the Los Angeles Philharmonic Association, the International Association of Jazz Education, and the Henry Mancini Institute. In 2018, he was selected as a MacDowell Colony fellow.
