Research activity

A) UK-India Education and Research Initiative (UKIERI) (June 2014 - June 2016):

Co-researcher on the ongoing international project ‘Development of a bacteriophage-based biocontrol technology for the treatment of Cholera’, a project between the University of Nottingham, UK & National Institute of Cholera and Enteric Diseases (NICED), Kolkata, India, a WHO Collaborating Centre for diarrheal diseases research & training. This project is worth £40000/- and in order to put this project together I had to extensively liaise with the institutes and authorities in India.

B) PhD Research project (2011 to mid-2015) University of Nottingham, UK Title: Bio control of Vibrio cholerae using bacteriophages.

This project is aimed at assessing the potential of bacteriophage for treating Vibrio cholerae infection. The project involved isolation and characterisation of phages. Phages were obtained from 4

Public Health England (PHE), London and Felix d’Herelle Reference Centre for Bacterial Viruses, Canada. In addition, seven phages were isolated in China during a PhD student exchange at China Agricultural University (CAU), Beijing. All phages were characterised in vitro for host range profile, electron microscopy, restriction analysis, one step growth curve and replication dynamics. The phage genomes were sequenced and annotated. A candidate phage was selected for in vivo therapeutic trials using the infant rabbit model. The therapeutic trials were carried out at the University of Surrey in collaboration with Dr. Jenny Ritchie. In these, the candidate phage successfully reduced bacterial numbers significantly with complete elimination of clinical signs of disease.

In addition, during the course of the PhD project I initiated and contributed to a proposal for the UK-India Education and Research Initiative (UKIERI) entitled ‘Development of a bacteriophage- based biocontrol technology for the treatment of Cholera’ on which I am one of the Indian collaborators. The main Indian partner is the National Institute of Cholera and Enteric Diseases (NICED), Kolkata, India. This application was successful and the collaborative project is now under way.

I also initiated the collaboration with the University of Nairobi, Kenya for joint research on Vibrio cholerae phages. A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) has been signed between the University of Nottingham and the Kenyan counterpart for a three month visiting international fellowship to facilitate the collaboration.

C) ‘Outreach Programme on Zoonotic Diseases (OPZD)’ (August, 2010 to September, 2011)

Principal Investigator (PI) on ‘Outreach Programme on Zoonotic Diseases (OPZD)’. OPZD was an Indian national network project sanctioned during the XI five year plan of Indian Council for Agricultural Research. Project dealt with ‘Prevalence, molecular characterization and economic impact of major meat borne zoonotic parasitic diseases viz. Hydatidosis, Cysticercosis and Trichinellosis’. I have managed the funding resource worth £75000/- for this project and have got an appreciation from the Govt. of India for the work carried during my PI ship.

D) MSc (Meat Science & Technology) Research project (2006) University of Bristol, UK Title: Characterization of Salmonella bacteriophages ΦT10 and ΦE151.

As a part of the European Union project called 'SUPASALVAC' on biological control of Salmonella using bacteriophages, my research project within the taught MSc was aimed at characterisation of the isolated phages of Salmonella Typhimurium strain 4/74 and S. Enteritidis strain P125109. For characterisation, the one step growth curve, in vitro replication dynamics, host range profile and genome size with PFGE were done.

E) MVSc (Food Hygiene & Veterinary Public Health) Research project (2001) Maharashtra Animal and Fishery Sciences University, Nagpur, India Title: Studies on levels of contamination in organised and unorganised sheep/goat slaughterhouses.

This project was aimed at comparing the microbial load on sheep/goat carcasses in a modern Indian abattoir and traditional meat shops in Mumbai city. Swab samples were collected from abattoirs 5 and retail meat shops during different stages of meat production and processed for total viable counts and differential counts. Study revealed that level of contamination in the traditional meat shops was significantly higher compared to the abattoir.
