JOB PURPOSE Lay Clerks sing at regular daily services as part of the Cathedral Choir and also participate in , recordings and other events

CONTEXT Ely Cathedral is the mother of the Diocese of Ely. It is the seat of the and a centre of worship and mission. Originally founded in 673 as a double monastery by St Etheldreda, it became a Cathedral in 1109. The City of Ely has a population of 20,000 and enjoys excellent road and rail communications to all parts of the country. Currently a team of 6 Lay Clerks are joined by the Boy Choristers and the Ely Cathedral Girls’ Choir, together with their separate Directors of Music and Assistant , to provide daily sung worship as detailed in the schedule below. The Music Department also includes Ely Cathedral Octagon Singers (a voluntary choir) and the Ely Imps (children’s choir). All Cathedral employees are required to work together to enable the Cathedral to fulfil its mission of “Joyfully proclaiming the love of God in worship, outreach, welcome and care”.

SALARY Cathedral salary: £8,500 (reviewed annually). This is supplemented substantially by extra fees for concerts, recordings and non-statutory services. These are listed below.

DUTIES Lay Clerks will attend all services and as in the Cathedral Choir’s calendar according to the following Schedule of Commitments:

Weekdays: usually four each week, 5.00 Rehearsal (Mondays, Thursdays, Fridays and 5.30 Evensong Saturdays) Saturday practice at 4.15pm preceding full Evensong rehearsal

One weekday rehearsal till 7.00pm (usually on a Thursday)

Annual attendance commitment 200 appearances (not including any event attracting an extra fee)

Period of Commitment School term time (late August or early September until early July, including Christmas, Holy Week and Easter, with breaks in school holidays),

Mandatory events that may replace regular Diocesan services or events services (those in bold attract extra fees) Major concerts in the cathedral and in the diocese Radio and television broadcasts Sound or video recordings Non-mandatory events which attract extra Weddings fees Funerals Memorial services Additional commitments Termly Lay Clerks’ meetings (usually a weekday evening)

Provision of deputies Up to 3 per term at the Cathedral’s expense, any further absences at the Lay Clerk’s expense. All absences must be by prior consultation with the Director of Music.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

We are looking for a skilled with appropriate vocal quality and technique. Successful candidates will have ample choral experience and advanced sight-reading skills.

We expect candidates to have empathy with the and Ely Cathedral’s Christian ethos and mission.
