Today the Catholic Church in the United States begins a week-long celebration of Catholic Schools. The theme for this obser- vance is “Catholic Schools: Communities of Faith, Knowledge and Service.” This theme encompasses several concepts that are at the heart of a Catholic education. First, Catholic schools are communities – small families in their own right, but also members of the larger community of home, parish, city and nation. Faith, knowledge and service are three meas- ures by which any Catholic school can and Third Sunday should be judged. And while “knowledge” in the theme for Catholic in Ordinary Time Schools Week refers to academics, I would say that faith and service is January 26, 2014 also the purpose and goal of the community of students and catechists at St. Thomas who make up our religious education program for those Wait for the Lord with courage; attending public schools. Prior to my assignment becoming effective at St. Thomas in in the gym, with donuts anytime June 2012, Bishop Conlon met with me (as he does with all pastors between 9:00 and 9:30 a.m. or receiving new assignments) to discuss his observations about the 10:30 to 11:15 a.m. parish and what might be needed in the new pastor’s leadership. I thoroughly expected to be given a list of things that he wanted changed at St. Thomas. But instead, all he said to me was that he wanted me and the parish to support Catholic education and All Saints Catholic Academy. So, regardless if you did or didn’t support the deci- sion 10 years ago, I would ask you to support the present reality, that All Saints Catholic Academy IS part of the mission and ministry of St. Thomas the Apostle parish. Because OUR school is not on the campus of St. Thomas the Apostle, it is easy to forget or even realize that St. Thomas has a Catholic grammar school. So, I invite you to visit All Saints. Every Wednesday at 8:15a.m. there is an all school Mass. The priests in the sponsoring parishes as well as neighboring parishes rotate in presiding. Several of our St. Thomas staff attended the last Mass that I was the presider. I next have the Mass at All Saints on January 29 and Fr. Dof has it on February 12. Even if you don’t have children attending ASCA, you are welcome to attend an open house this Sunday, January 26 from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. All Saints is located two miles from St. Thomas at 1155 Aurora Avenue in Naperville. In my 33 years of being a priest, every parish I have been assigned at has had a Catholic grammar School. I believe they are well worth it!

Worship Commission—Liturgy & Music Feast of the Presentation of the Lord – February 1/2 The weekend of February 1/2 is the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord. In faithful observance of the law of Moses, Mary and Joseph present Jesus in the Temple to consecrate him to the Lord. There they met the righteous Simeon and the prophet Anna, for whom Temple worship was part of everyday life. God re- warded their fidelity by allowing them to see the one who was Savior and to hold him in their arms. When the ceremony of presentation was completed, Mary and Joseph and Jesus returned to their hometown. There, they created a home and a family life. There, Jesus grew up, becoming strong and wise, and the grace of God was upon him. The Feast of the Presentation of the Lord, on February 2, is also called Candlemas Day. According to Luke’s account of the Gospel, Simeon recognized Jesus as the Messiah in the Temple and declared him “a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and glory for your people Israel”. This sparked the tradition of blessing enough candles to last an entire year. This led to candle processions in churches and in the streets, which became known as “Candlemas”.

In celebration of Candlemas, St. Thomas will have a blessing of candles at the beginning of Masses on Sunday, February 2. All are invited to bring candles from home which you will use for prayer throughout the year to be blessed.

St. Thomas will also be selling blessed candles after each Mass the weekend of February 1/2. The proceeds will be used to purchase a beautiful votive candle stand for the chapel that will be used for prayer devotions. People who know Langlois told Catholic News Service that he worked tirelessly after the January 2010 earthquake and that he represents the face of a new Haitian church dedicated to working with the country's most vulnerable residents. Since the earthquake, Langlois has advocated for the church to take a leading role in providing schooling for impoverished children, said Fr. Jean Herve Francois, pastor at Our Lady of Lourdes Parish in Laborde, just north of Les Cayes. "He has dedicated himself to creating opportunities for the youth and to the importance of education," Francois told Catholic News Ser- vice in a telephone interview. "He clearly has a touch with ordi- nary people."

The news that Langlois was among the 19 new cardinals who will be elevated in a consistory at the Vatican Feb- ruary 22, also brought praise from the United States. “The appointment of Cardinal Chibly Langlois, the youngest of those named, will bring much-needed attention to Haiti and the plight of its people who still struggle to recover from the aftermath of the earthquake as well from the endemic poverty of this island nation of some 9 million people,” Miami Archbishop Thomas Wenski said in a statement.
