Today the Catholic Church in the United States begins a week-long celebration of Catholic Schools. The theme for this obser- vance is “Catholic Schools: Communities of Faith, Knowledge and Service.” This theme encompasses several concepts that are at the heart of a Catholic education. First, Catholic schools are communities – small families in their own right, but also members of the larger community of home, parish, city and nation. Faith, knowledge and service are three meas- ures by which any Catholic school can and Third Sunday should be judged. And while “knowledge” in the theme for Catholic in Ordinary Time Schools Week refers to academics, I would say that faith and service is January 26, 2014 also the purpose and goal of the community of students and catechists at St. Thomas who make up our religious education program for those Wait for the Lord with courage; attending public schools. So, I say thank you to all who teach in our be stouthearted, and wait for the Lord. Catholic Schools and in our Religious Education Programs. — Psalm 27:14 We at St. Thomas are blessed and should be proud to be part of a most progressive endeavor in the Diocese. Unlike Sts. Peter & Paul and St. Raphael, St. Thomas, St. Margaret Mary and St. Elizabeth Seton did not have a parish school. In 2005, to provide an option of a Catholic Welcome Guests and Visitors! grammar school education for families at St. Thomas, St. Margaret We’re so glad you’re here and invite Mary, and St. Elizabeth Seton, our three parishes being on the cutting you to walk the path of faith with us. edge, formed a regional Catholic grammar School - All Saints Catholic St. Thomas strives to provide a spiritual Academy. I have thoroughly enjoyed celebrating school masses and home where all are welcome, where the interacting with the students. I am deeply impressed with the quality, healing, reconciling, liberating love of faith and dedication of our school’s leadership, parents, and teachers. God is shared by all. We believe the I am told that the decision made ten years ago to invest parish funds church is the sacrament of God’s saving in establishing ASCA was not fully supported among parishioners in presence in the world, join us! the three founding parishes. And while I can’t speak to that as I was not here at the time, I would say that in my short one and a half years as Would you like to become pastor at St. Thomas and experiencing the families and community of a Parishioner? All Saints Catholic Academy, I believe the investment has been well Join us Sunday, February 9 worth it! Prior to my assignment becoming effective at St. Thomas in in the gym, with donuts anytime June 2012, Bishop Conlon met with me (as he does with all pastors between 9:00 and 9:30 a.m. or receiving new assignments) to discuss his observations about the 10:30 to 11:15 a.m. parish and what might be needed in the new pastor’s leadership. I thoroughly expected to be given a list of things that he wanted changed at St. Thomas. But instead, all he said to me was that he wanted me and the parish to support Catholic education and All Saints Catholic Academy. So, regardless if you did or didn’t support the deci- sion 10 years ago, I would ask you to support the present reality, that All Saints Catholic Academy IS part of the mission and ministry of St. Thomas the Apostle parish. Because OUR school is not on the campus of St. Thomas the Apostle, it is easy to forget or even realize that St. Thomas has a Catholic grammar school. So, I invite you to visit All Saints. Every Wednesday at 8:15a.m. there is an all school Mass. The priests in the sponsoring parishes as well as neighboring parishes rotate in presiding. Several of our St. Thomas staff attended the last Mass that I was the presider. I next have the Mass at All Saints on January 29 and Fr. Dof has it on February 12. Even if you don’t have children attending ASCA, you are welcome to attend an open house this Sunday, January 26 from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. All Saints is located two miles from St. Thomas at 1155 Aurora Avenue in Naperville. In my 33 years of being a priest, every parish I have been assigned at has had a Catholic grammar School. I believe they are well worth it! Worship Commission—Liturgy & Music Feast of the Presentation of the Lord – February 1/2 The weekend of February 1/2 is the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord.
