Zsuzsanna Ajtony [email protected] Imagology – National Images and Stereotypes in Literature and Culture (Manfred Beller, Joep Leerssen (eds.) Imagology. The Cultural Construction and Literary Representation of National Characters. Amsterdam: Rodopi, 2007) Stereotyping is a natural ordering function of the human and social mind. Stereotypes make reality easier to deal with because they simplify the complexities that make people unique, and this simplification reflects important beliefs and values as well. People have a rich variety of beliefs about typical members of groups including beliefs about traits, behaviours and values of a typical group member. Social identity theory (Tajfel 1978) considers that our relation to the different social or ethnic categories is inherently asymmetrical. Categorizing people according to their ethnic or national affiliation affects the judgment of their features. The ethnic group we belong to is experienced to be “ingroup biased”, continuously being overestimated as opposed to the outgroup. This asymmetrical relation leads to the emergence of national or ethnic stereotypes. As a result, it is an old and widespread tendency that different societies, races or “nations” are endowed with certain features or even characters. It seems that different people’s relationship to other cultures is characterised by ethnocentrism, i.e. anything that is different from one’s own patterns, is considered to be “other”, strange, anomalous or unique. In several languages, the critical analysis of national stereotypes that appear in literature and in other forms of cultural representation is called imagology or image studies. This technical neologism indicates a relatively novel domain of science that studies the national stereotypes as presented in literature and culture. -

Patents of Arms Online the Database of Patents of Arms of the National Archives of Hungary1
STUDIA HISTORICA BRUNENSIA 62, 2015, 2 KRISZTINA ARANY – ANTON AVAR PATENTS OF ARMS ONLINE THE DATABASE OF PATENTS OF ARMS OF THE NATIONAL ARCHIVES OF HUNGARY1 Abstract: Besides their decorative appearance, the patents of arms bear significant historical value, which provide important contribution to various ar- eas of historical science. The aim of the National Archives of Hungary’s project of several years was to create a versatile, illustrated, well-search- able and expandable online database, in which we could process the data of all the original patents of arms and related documents held in our insti- tution. Our collections of patents of arms are being built since the founda- tion of our institution, and contain over 2000 original parchment charters granting mainly Hungarian and Transylvanian nobility along with heraldic achievements. At present, the National Archives of Hungary has completed the digitization and processing of all this material, except for the 131 medi- eval (pre-1526) charters, which is to be covered in the near future. Keywords: patents of arms, coats of arms, online database, mass digitization, Na- tional Archives of Hungary, open access. I. Patents of Arms in the National Archives of Hungary The patents of arms bear significant historical value besides their decorative appearance as archival source material. Therefore, they can contribute to var- ious fields of science, heraldry, palaeography, diplomatics, sigillography and 1 This work has been supported in part by Croatian Science Foundation under the pro- ject “Sources, Manuals and Studies for Croatian History from the Middle Ages to the End of the Long Nineteenth Century”(IP-2014-09-6547). -

The Irish Catholic Episcopal Corps, 1657 – 1829: a Prosopographical Analysis
THE IRISH CATHOLIC EPISCOPAL CORPS, 1657 – 1829: A PROSOPOGRAPHICAL ANALYSIS VOLUME 1 OF 2 BY ERIC A. DERR THESIS FOR THE DEGREE OF PHD DEPARTMENT OF HISTORY NATIONAL UNIVERISTY OF IRELAND MAYNOOTH SUPERVISOR OF RESEARCH: DR. THOMAS O’CONNOR NOVEMBER 2013 Abstract This study explores, reconstructs and evaluates the social, political, educational and economic worlds of the Irish Catholic episcopal corps appointed between 1657 and 1829 by creating a prosopographical profile of this episcopal cohort. The central aim of this study is to reconstruct the profile of this episcopate to serve as a context to evaluate the ‘achievements’ of the four episcopal generations that emerged: 1657-1684; 1685- 1766; 1767-1800 and 1801-1829. The first generation of Irish bishops were largely influenced by the complex political and religious situation of Ireland following the Cromwellian wars and Interregnum. This episcopal cohort sought greater engagement with the restored Stuart Court while at the same time solidified their links with continental agencies. With the accession of James II (1685), a new generation of bishops emerged characterised by their loyalty to the Stuart Court and, following his exile and the enactment of new penal legislation, their ability to endure political and economic marginalisation. Through the creation of a prosopographical database, this study has nuanced and reconstructed the historical profile of the Jacobite episcopal corps and has shown that the Irish episcopate under the penal regime was not only relatively well-organised but was well-engaged in reforming the Irish church, albeit with limited resources. By the mid-eighteenth century, the post-Jacobite generation (1767-1800) emerged and were characterised by their re-organisation of the Irish Church, most notably the establishment of a domestic seminary system and the setting up and manning of a national parochial system. -

BURIAL CUSTOMS in the 10Th–11Th CENTURIES in TRANSYLVANIA, CRIŞANA and BANAT*
BURIAL CUSTOMS IN THE 10th–11th CENTURIES IN TRANSYLVANIA, CRIŞANA AND BANAT* ERWIN GÁLL To Dr. Radu Harhoiu for his 60th birthday The examination of burial customs in the 10th–11th centuries in Transylvania, Crişana and Banat has almost no tradition. Beside the works of Gyula László written during World War II (in which he could only examine the phenomena of the Cluj-Napoca–Zápolya Street cemetery),1 no one has dealt with burial customs extensively. The Hungarian scientific literature slowly lost interest in the problem of the Transylvanian conquest,2 and consequently no one treated burial customs to any great depth.3 Romanian archaeology has pursued two goals: to prove the Daco-Romanic continuity4 and the existence of the Romanian, pre-Hungarian knezates in Transylvania, Banat and Crişana.5 Therefore, the presentation and the analysis of burial customs in the 10th–11th centuries in Transylvania, Banat and Crişana have not been the subject of any study to date. THE GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS OF BURIALS The most important elements in defining and analysing the cultural horizon of the 10th–11th centuries in Transylvania, Crişana and Banat are the burial customs. The burial customs are first the emotional reaction of relatives, members of family at the time of death. The most important condition of its manifestation is the economic status of the community, the family and the individual. It can be clearly seen in the quantity and quality of ritual sacrifices, weapons and dress accessories deposited in the grave. Naturally, the quantity and quality depend largely on the political-economic status of the specific region as well as on the importance of the economic roads passing through that region, all which are clearly manifested in the graves. -
Fifty Thousand Hungarian Martyrs
FIFTY THOUSAND HUNGARIAN MARTYRS REPORT ABOUT THE HUNGARIAN HOLOCAUST IN JUGOSLAVIA 1944-1992 HUNSOR Document Imprint Editor -István Nyárádi Redactor-Zsuzsanna Kubinyi Photos - Attita Peremiczky Preparation for printing-ARGOS Ltd. Responsible director- András Pórffy, managing director Printing-AMEKO Ltd. From 1944 up to 1992 fifty thousand Hungarians fell victims to the Titoist blood feud. After the decay of the communist Yugoslavia the post-Bolshevist Serbian leaders have been slaughtering the Hungarians and expelling them from their homeland up to now in order to establish the homogeneous people's state. Their houses are either razed to the ground or assigned together with their lands and properties to the removing Serbians from Bosnia. The free nations, the UN and the countries united in it forgive the sacrifice and ruining of the Hungarians. They do not do anything so that the Hungarians suffering enormous losses in human life could stay on the land of their ancestors. The number of the Hungarian martyrs is increasing day by day. How long does the democratic public opinion of the World have patience? This report is about the slaughtering and expelling of the Hungarian minority in Serbia. HISTORICAL INFORMATION The Hungarian Republic is situated along the middle reaches of the rivers Danube and Tisza, between 45 45'-48' N and 16’5'-22 55' E in the middle of the Carpathian Basin in Central Europe enclosed by the parts of the Alps, Carpathians and Dinaric mountains. More than the half of its whole surface is a plain not higher than 200 m above sea level, resp. it is Lowland. -
Greek Merchants in Transylvania and Their Networks at the End of the 17Th Century
‘This is their profession’ Greek merchants in Transylvania and their Networks at the End of the 17th century MARIA PAKUCS The ‘Nicolae Iorga’ Institute of History and New Europe College Bucharest Abstract This article explores the commercial network of a Greek merchant from Transylvania at the end of the seventeenth century. Based on various archival material, it unfolds the extent of business interests and contacts of a trading network, spanning a wide territory in the Balkans and Central Europe as well, extending our prior knowledge of how the early Greek diaspora communities operated. Established in the Transylvanian juridical system with the specific role of providers of Ottoman products, Greek merchants swiftly extended their commercial activities as intermediaries of trade with Central European markets as well. The article also touches upon the difficulties of identifying individual merchants in different sources and languages. Keywords: Greek merchants, trade, business networks, debts Sometime in early 1694, the Greek merchant Kozma Kis (i.e. ‘Small’ in Hungarian) was lying on his deathbed in Sibiu, Transylvania, while his creditors, not waiting for his last breath, were opening up his shop and taking away bundles of English cloth. We know these details from the testimonies of sixty Greek merchants of Sibiu, when Kozma’s creditors requested the settlement of outstanding debts. Principally, the town judges of Sibiu acted as executors and administrators of deceased merchants, under great pressure coming from István Apor, a baron of the realm, and György Bánffy, the governor of Transylvania. The inquest papers are a goldmine of information on the commercial web of local and international trade connections created by the Greek merchants of Sibiu.1 The 1 The case is mentioned by Olga Cicanci, Companiile grecești din Transilvania și comerțul european în anii 1636– 1746 [The Greek companies in Transylvania and their European trade, 1636–1746] (Bucharest: Editura Academiei, 1981), 58. -
