The research was conducted in 2014 on several sites located on waste heaps with various levels of insolation and humidity. During the study 79 species were collected. The paper presents the results of ecological analyses complemented by a qualitative analysis performed based on the indices of species diversity. -

(Araneae, Araneidae) collected in central and western Spain is described and illustrated. Its novel status is confirmed after a thorough revision of the literature and museum material from the Mediterranean Basin. The taxonomy of Araneus is complicated, but both morphological and molecular data supported the genus membership of Araneus bonali Morano, sp. n. Additionally, the species uniqueness was confirmed by sequencing the barcode gene cytochrome oxidase I from the new species and comparing it with the barcodes available for species of Araneus. A molecular phylogeny, based on nuclear and mitochondrial genes, retrieved a clade with a moderate support that grouped Araneus diadematus Clerck, 1757 with another eleven species, but neither included Araneus bonali sp. -

INTRODUCTION Planthoppers and leafhoppers (Hemiptera: Fulgoromorpha et Cicadomorpha) are phytophagous insects which are highly related to their host plants, and most of them are trophically specialized as mono- or oligophagous (niCkel 2003), so most of them are attached to the specific plant associations, where they form multispecies communities. -

Gillespie Center for Conservation Research and Training, University of Hawaii, 3050 Maile Way, Gilmore 409, Honolulu, Hawaii 96822; e-mail: [email protected] KEY WORDS: color, crypsis, genetics, guanine, melanism, mimicry, natural selection, pigments, polymorphism, sexual dimorphism ABSTRACT Genetic color variation provides a tangible link between the external phenotype of an organism and its underlying genetic determination and thus furnishes a tractable system with which to explore fundamental evolutionary phenomena. Here we examine the basis of color variation in spiders and its evolutionary and ecological implications. Reversible color changes, resulting from several mechanisms, are surprisingly widespread in the group and must be distinguished from true genetic variation for color to be used as an evolutionary tool. Genetic polymorphism occurs in a large number of families and is frequently sex limited: Sex linkage has not yet been demonstrated, nor have the forces promoting sex limitation been elucidated. It is argued that the production of color is metabolically costly and is principally maintained by the action of sight-hunting predators. Key avenues for future research are suggested. INTRODUCTION Differences in color and pattern among individuals have long been recognized as providing a tractable system with which to address fundamental evolutionary questions (57). -

Unlike insects spiders show much fewer diversifications in terms of morphology and foraging strategies. Species of different families possess a very similar body plan and all feed almost exclusively on insects (Foelix 1996). Nevertheless, spiders conquered a broad spectrum of habitats. From the evolutionary point of view these order- specific features demonstrate that “They are obviously doing something right” (Craig 2003). -

The phylogenetic relationship among the genera of the subfamily Deltocephalinae and its allies occurring in Japan is studied, and the tribes Deltocephalini and Paralimnini are redefined. The phylogenetic analyses were based upon the maximum-parsimony method by the manual and computer-aided reconstruction with the Fitch characters and Wagner characters (non-weighted or weighted). Sixty-four characters were used for the phylogenetic analyses. Deltocephalini s. str. was concluded to be paraphyletic and includes 2 lineages. The DeEtocephaZus clade consists of Alobaldia, Deltocephalus, Endria, Recilia, and Paramesodes. Contrary, Futasujinus, Hengchunia, Takagiella, and Yanocephalus belong to the Paralimnus lineage with Paralimnus, Paralaevicephalus, Psnrmlotrttis, Metalimnus, Diplocolenus, Jassus, Sorhoanus, Doratura, and Aco~~~~wlla. The Deltocephalus clade was referred to the tribe Deltocephalini and the Paralimnus clade to the tribe Paralimnini. Key words: phylogeny, morphology, Deltocephalini, Paralimnini. Cica- dellidae . Introduction Both tribes of Deltocephalini and Paralimnini comprise small leafhoppers having trian- gularly produced vertex. These tribes include 137 and 69 genera, respectively, and are widely distributed in the world from the tropical to the semi-polar regions under various environmental conditions. Most of their hosts are monocotyledonous plants including rice and other agricultural crops. -
