Their bizarre morphology, together with conflicting results of molecular studies, has nevertheless made their classification ambiguous. Furthermore, their limited dispersal capability (due to the primarily absence of wings) and their euedaphic lifestyle have greatly complicated species-level identification.

In CI, the outcome of crosses between symbiont-infected males and uninfected females is reproductive failure, increasing the relative fitness of infected females and leading to spread of the symbiont in the host population. CI symbionts have profound impacts on host genetic structure and ecology and may lead to speciation and the rapid evolution of sex determination systems. Cardinium hertigii, a member of the Bacteroidetes and symbiont of the parasitic wasp Encarsia pergandiella, is the only known bacterium other than the Alphaproteobacteria Wolbachia to cause CI. Here we report the genome sequence of Cardinium hertigii cEper1. Comparison with the genomes of CI–inducing Wolbachia pipientis strains wMel, wRi, and wPip provides a unique opportunity to pinpoint shared proteins mediating host cell interaction, including some candidate proteins for CI that have not previously been investigated. The genome of Cardinium lacks all major biosynthetic pathways but harbors a complete biotin biosynthesis pathway, suggesting a potential role for Cardinium in host nutrition.

Ecology of Italian Protura Loris Galli1*, Matteo Capurro1, Tony Molyneux2, Carlo Torti1 & Matteo Zinni1 1Dipartimento di Scienze Della Terra, dell’Ambiente e della Vita, Genoa University, Corso Europa 26, I16132, Italy. 2Gungahlin College, Canberra, Australia * Corresponding author. Permanent address: Dipartimento di Scienze Della Terra, dell’Ambiente e della Vita, Genoa University, Corso Europa 26, I16132, Italy. E-mail address: [email protected] Abstract The ecology of Protura in Italy (including Corsica) is tentatively described according to original and bibliographical data. Protura are quite common but very rarely abundant: their mean density in soil samples collected in Liguria (NW Italy) was estimated to be 372 /m² (s.d. 657 – max. 2790 /m² in a Holm oak forest). Information from the analyses of habitat and/or elevation of 3448 specimens from 269 collections and 4071 specimens from 295 collections identified to species and genus level, respectively, enabled us to outline Protura assemblages for eight different macro-habitats. The unbalanced sex ratio in favour of females observed in 12 of the dominant species of Acerentomata suggests that (based also on the sperm types known in Protura) a single male can fertilize several females through spermatophores. For one species (Proturentomon minimum) only females were collected, which may suggest the possibility of parthenogenesis in some Protura. An analysis of the phenology and population dynamics of the five dominant species, showed annual cycles with one (Acerentomon microrhinus) or more (A. gallicum, A. italicum, A. maius and Eosentomon transitorium) peaks of reproductive activity. Other ecological remarks (e.g. about the relationship between the amplitude of latitudinal/altitudinal distribution and the ecological distribution of Protura in Italy) are discussed.

In the past twenty years, indices based on living communities have been proposed alongside the already proven physical-chemical methods. Among them, some soil invertebrates have been included in monitoring programs as bioindicators of soil quality. Being an important portion of soil fauna, soil arthropods are involved in many soil processes such as organic matter decomposition and translocation, nutrient cycling, microflora activity regulation and bioturbation. Many studies have reported the use of soil arthropods to define soil quality; among taxa, some have been explored more in depth, typically Acari and Collembola, while generally less abundant groups, such as Palpigradi or Embioptera, have not been investigated much. This paper aims to evaluate and compare the use of different soil microarthropod taxa in soil degradation/quality studies to highlight which groups are the most reported for soil monitoring and which are the most sensitive to soil degradation. We have decided not to include the two most present and abundant taxa, Acari and Collembola, in this paper in consideration of the vast amount of existing literature and focus the discussion on the other microarthropod groups.

The first description of these minute soil arthropods was given in 1907 by the Italian entomologist Filippo Silvestri, who named them ‘Protura’. Shortly thereafter his fellow countryman Antonio Berlese published two brief notes on these animals before his grand monograph of the ‘Myrientomata’, as he named them, appeared in 1909. The centennial of the discovery of Protura offers the opportunity to review our knowledge about these peculiar animals. In the end, we must confess that proturans continue to retain an amazing number of secrets, including basic facts of knowledge about their biology and ecology. Up to the present, they have concealed from scientific observation their sexual life and the mode of sperm transmission. For a long time, their egg deposition and early development were completely obscure topics; only recently has it become possible to conduct first observations on their embryology. The list of open questions can be easily extended: we know only little about their nutritional biology, and next to nothing about their sensory systems, communication, physiological and ecological capacities.

  • First Record of Protura (Hexapoda) in Israel with Notes on Their Distribution and Ecology
Israel Journal of Entomology Vol. XXX (1996) pp. 1-5 FIRST RECORD OF PROTURA (HEXAPODA) IN ISRAEL WITH NOTES ON THEIR DISTRIBUTION AND ECOLOGY Meir Broza1, Dina Poliakov1 and Andrzej Szeptycki2 1 University of Haifa, Oranim, QiryatTiv'on 36006, Israel 2Institute of Systematics and Evolution of Animals, Polish Academy of Sciences, ul. Slawkowska 17, 31-016 Krakow, Poland ABSTRACT Protura (Hexapoda) is recorded for the first time from Israel with three western Palaearctic species: Acerella muscorum (Ionescu), Berberentulus berberus (Conde) and Acerentomon meridionale Nosek. The density of the proturan population in pine forest soil on Mt. Carmel is estimated to be approximately 4,000 specimens per m2 in the winter and about 350 specimens per m2 in the summer. KEY WORDS: Protura, Acerella, Acerentomon, Berberentulus, Israel, soil microarthropods. INTRODUCTION Telsontails (Protura) are delicate, unpigmented, minute hexapods, usually less than 2 mm long, living in moist and concealed habitats, in soil and decomposing organic material. Silvestry (1907) was the first to discover and recognize Protura (Tuxen, 1964). In his monograph, Berlese (1909) classified Protura as a subclass (Myrientomata) of Insecta. Later authors, such as Sharov (1966), Yin (1984), Kristensen (1991), Kukalova-Peck (1991), and Houston (1994), classified Protura in a separate class of Hexapoda. The class and order Protura are now placed as the sister group to the Collembola, in the Ellipura (= Parainsecta), which is recognized as the sister group to the Insecta (Houston, 1994). Protura consists of about 600 species, divided into some 68 genera (Nosek, 1973; A. Szeptycki, unpublished data). The higher classification of the order Protura is not fully understood.

We report three test cases of our research on the origin and the early splits of insects to exemplify conflicts in phylogenetic reconstruction. (i) The „Entognatha-problem“: Since the support of the taxon Entognatha by morphological data has always been on shaky ground, high hopes were placed in the molecular approach. The first analyses with single genes consistently led to an unprecedented sister group relationship between Protura and Diplura (the new taxon was later termed Nonoculata). Strangely, however, the first comprehensive transcriptomic analyses even questioned the monophyly of Entognatha. While it might look like a merry-go-round of phylogenetic hypotheses, each new analysis helped us to find out some of the deeper causes of these conflicts. Still, the Entognatha-problem has to be considered as not yet solved. (ii) Brain anatomy: The evolution of the fan shaped body, a highly differentiated substructure of the central complex, is very difficult to explain irrespective on which tree it is mapped.

  • A Synopsis of the Ecology of Protura (Arthropoda: Hexapoda)
Revue suisse de Zoologie (September 2019) 126(2): 155-164 ISSN 0035-418 A synopsis of the ecology of Protura (Arthropoda: Hexapoda) Loris Galli1,*, Matteo Capurro1, Elisa Colasanto1, Tony Molyneux2, Andy Murray3, Carlo Torti1 & Matteo Zinni1 1 Dipartimento di Scienze Della Terra, dell’Ambiente e della Vita, Genoa University, Corso Europa 26, I-16132, Italy. 2 Gungahlin College, 23 Gozzard Street, Gungahlin Town Centre, ACT 2912, Australia. 3 Somerset, UK (www.chaosofdelight.org). * Corresponding author: [email protected] Abstract: This publication reviews the literature on the ecology of Protura. Current knowledge is scarce, fragmentary and scattered among papers which do not all strictly deal with ecology or soil arthropods communities. Therefore all available information is summarized in order to better understand the ecology of these arthropods. The density of Protura ranges from hundreds to thousands of individuals per m². Their aggregate distribution is probably related to food (fungal hyphae) availability and quality, and to the production of aggregation pheromones. Protura tend to form species assemblages characterizing different habitats. Their populations often show an unbalanced sex ratio in favour of females, suggesting that a single male can fertilize several females, perhaps via spermatophores. For some species only females have been collected, which suggests the possibility of parthenogenesis. Our analysis of the available information on phenology and population dynamics of Protura points toward annual cycles with one, two or more peaks of reproductive activity. Keywords: Soil - density - habitat - species assemblages - phenology. MORPHOLOGY AND TAXONOMY 1964 Tuxen published his seminal work about Protura of the World; in 1973 Nosek’s monograph on European Protura are entognathous Hexapoda living in the soil.

  • The Influence of Vicariance and Dispersal on the Diversification and Evolution of Springtails (Collembola) by Aron D. Katz Diss
THE INFLUENCE OF VICARIANCE AND DISPERSAL ON THE DIVERSIFICATION AND EVOLUTION OF SPRINGTAILS (COLLEMBOLA) BY ARON D. KATZ DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Entomology in the Graduate College of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2018 Urbana, Illinois Doctoral Committee: Doctor Mark A. Davis, Chair and Co-Director of Research Doctor Steven J. Taylor, Co-Director of Research Professor Andrew V. Suarez Professor James B. Whitfield ABSTRACT Vicariance and dispersal are major drivers of the evolution of biodiversity, yet the relative impact of these processes, and the factors that influence them, often remain elusive. Identifying and understanding evolutionary processes responsible for generating diversity is essential for understanding ecological patterns and for the development and implementation of management strategies intended to conserve biodiversity. My dissertation research is focused on the historical, ecological and evolutionary underpinnings driving the origin, diversification, and maintenance of biodiversity in springtails (Collembola). This class of tiny, wingless insect-like hexapods includes some of the most abundant (and perhaps, most diverse) arthropods on earth. They have colonized, diversified, and adapted to nearly every terrestrial habitat from marine intertidal zones and tropical rainforests to polar deserts and caves, yet the evolutionary mechanisms behind their ecological success are poorly understood. Ecological specialization is a central theme in my first two chapters. Species with obligate ecological associations offer simple systems to evaluate biogeographical hypotheses and also provide an ecological context to test the effects and consequences of specialization on patterns of diversity. In Chapter 1, I identify and compare spatial and temporal patterns of molecular diversity for two ecologically distinct and codistributed genera of cavernicolous springtails (cave-obligate vs.
