The anti-corruption movement, better known as the India Against Corruption Movement (IAC), demanded the passage of the Janlokpal Act, an Ombudsman body. The movement mobilized public opinion against corruption and the need for the passage of a law to address its rising incidence. The claim to eradicate corruption captured the imagination of the middle class, and threw up several questions of representation. The movement prompted public and media debates over who represented civil society, who could claim to represent the ‘people’, and asked whether parliamentary democracy was a more authentic representative of the people’s wishes vis-à-vis a people’s democracy where people expressed their opinion through direct action. This article traces various ideas of po- litical representation within the IAC that preceded the formation of the AAP to reveal the emergence of populist repre- sentative democracy in India. It reveals the dynamic relationship forged by the movement with the media, which created a political field that challenged liberal democratic principles and legitimized popular public perception and opinion over laws and institutions. -

Indic Influences on Dance as Devotion in Angkor Southeast Asian Module – Postgraduate Diploma in Asian Art School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London By Chloe Calderon Chotrani Submitted on July 12, 2015 This paper contends that dance was practiced as a devotional union between the ancestral and earthly realms through ritualistic performances in architectural spaces with its genesis in India extending into Southeast Asia. I will examine the bronze figures of deities, relief carvings and architectural layouts of tantric temple centres in Angkor, Cambodia in relation to ancient Hindu traditions of South India; pronouncing the affinity between the dancer and the temple. The synthesis of physical and spiritual power with intention becomes a practice of transcendental impulse. The creator of Hindu cosmology, Brahma, produced the Natya Veda, the science of dramatic performance, which was passed onto the sage Bharata whom presented the three fold of performance: drama, music and dance to Shiva, Lord of dance and destruction. Shiva then instructed his chief attendant to pass the dance of bliss, anadatandava to Bharata. Bharata then wrote the Natya Shastra, an ancient Indian scripture on the performing arts which admitted artistry to all with reasons of performance as an experience of spiritual transmission.1 Essentially, dance is an offering to maintain harmony with the spirits through the ritual of service, by which the human body as the medium is translated into an expression that speaks beyond language and literature. The written word and spoken word are instruments of communication; yet, movement defies language by means of example.2 Dance is intangible and momentary; as it is expressed and appreciated at its paramount in transitory. -

REPRESENTING BHARAT MATA IN POPULAR HINDI FILMS: A SOCIO-HISTORICAL STUDY OF NATIONALIST POLITICS OF DEATH SOUVIK MONDAL Assistant Professor in Sociology. Presidency University, Kolkata, India. E-mail: [email protected] Abstract- Death, which always poses threat to social order with all its uncertainty, can be rationalised teleologically. Historically, Religion has been assigned the role of mitigating the chaotic impact of death by rationalizing it. And if one death is an instance of ‘bad’ death, role of religion has become more essential. With modernity disappears this role of religions and newly emerged scintifico-legal intuitions like state have endeavoured to satiate the rational vacuum created by scientism. In India, during the colonial period the emergence of the image of Mother India or Bharat Mata was a secular attempt to justify the sacrifices of lives of freedom fighters. This article will attempt to analysis the claimed secular nature of Bharat Mata through its illustration from colonial India’s popular culture to its modern day representation in Hindi films. Also, the majoritarian politics of this representation of Bharat Mata as the justifying agent of death would also be analysed to comprehend the constitutional claim of India being a secular nation. THINKING DESIGN Prof. S. Balaram About the Author Singanapalli Balaram is an industrial designer; senior faculty and former Chairman of Education at the National Institute of Design in India. He is recipient of the honorary fellowship of the Society of Industrial Designers of India and an invited member of the advisory board of ‘Design Issues”, U.SA Four inventions of Balaram have been patented by NID.The Institute also won the first ICSID - Philips award (International Council of Socieiteis of Industrial Design) for its outstanding achievement in Industrial Design. One of the seven projects which won this award was Balaram’s. Life-saving medical equipment which he and a colleague jointly designed for Sri Chitra Tirunal Institute of Medical Sciences and Technology was awarded India’s prestigious National Meritorious Invention Award. Born into a farmer’s family in Gunnathota Valasa, a tiny Agraharam (a village gifted to a scholar by the king) in Andhra Pradesh, South India, Balaram did his post-graduation in product design from the National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad and a research course at the Royal College of Art, London. He holds a diploma in Mechanical Engineering. He started his professional career as a sign board painter and later became a mechanical engineer finally settling down to Design practice and .teaching, His varied pursuits include short story writing; package design and film criticism. He has held senior positions as Chairman of Extension programmes, Co-ordinator, Foundation Programme, Associate Chairman, Industrial Design etc. at the National Institute of Design. He is presently Governing Council Member of The Centre for Environmental Planning and Technology; Vice President of The Society of Industrial Designers of India and Co-ordinator, Design Foundation Studies, NID. -

Whose Mother (land)?: Visualising and Theorising National Identity - Karen Gabriel - Introduction Using established and familiar iconographic representations of the nation, this paper will make two intertwined arguments. The first of these is that by and large, narrations of the nation have a melodramatic structure. The second is that, the iconic and mythogenic figuring of the nation as Mother India/Bharat Mata, contrary to enduring assumptions about it, is, strictly speaking, not a ‘national’ one at all. To do the above, the paper will critically review the relations between a) melodrama, gender, the organisation of sexuality, the family and the nation; b) The principle of maternality, the maternal body and nation. c) It will examine the ways in which central symbols of the national iconography of Mother India/ Bharat Mata have been cognised and reworked Some art instances and modern cinematic narrativizations and representations of the nation in mainstream Bombay cinema will be used to exemplify the precise nature of the relations set out above and the arguments being made. The argument will rest in the main on the work of cinema, since cinema remains a key representational site at which the mechanics of melodrama as these pertain to the nation-state are clearly deployed and visibilised. This specific dynamic was inevitable, in manner of speaking, given Bombay cinema’s historical involvement with nationalism, the nationalist movement and ideas of nation: this powerful cultural apparatus early on officially declared its commitment to promoting nation-building, national integration and patriotism. In that sense the medium always retained a sharp awareness of the historicity and the material bases of iconography and national discourse. -
