Book Discussion Dilip K Chakrabarti: The Borderlands and Borders of the Indian Subcontinent, New Delhi: Aryan Books International, 2018, pp 232 Understanding Indian Borderlands Dilip K Chakrabarti he Indian subcontinent shares borders with Iran, Afghanistan, the plateau of Tibet Tand Myanmar. The sub-continent’s influence extends beyond these borders, creating distinct ‘borderlands’ which are basically geographical, political, economic and religious interaction zones. It is these ‘borderlands’ which historically constitute the subcontinent’s ‘area of influence’ and underlines its civilizational role in the Asian landmass. A clear understanding of this civilizational role may be useful in strengthening India’s perception of her own geo-strategic position. Iran One may begin with Iran at the western limit of these borderland. There are two main mountain ranges in Iran : the Zagros which separates Iran from Iraq and has to its south the plain of Khuzestan giving access to south Iraq ; and the Elburz which separates the inland Iran from the Caspian belt, Turkmenistan and (to a limited extent , Azerbaijan). The Caspian shores form a well-wooded verdant belt which poses a strong contrast to the dry Iranian plateau. There are two deserts inside the Iranian plateau -- dasht-i-lut and dasht-i-kevir, which do not encourage human habitation. The population concentration of Iran is along the margins of the mountain belt and also in Khuzestan. The following facts are noteworthy. The eastern rim of Iran carries an imprint of the subcontinent. There is a ready access to Iranian Baluchistan through the Kej valley in Pakistani Baluchistan. At its eastern edge this valley leads both to lower Sindh and Kalat. -

This process can be understood as cultural representation in literature. Interpretation and depiction of cultural aspects in literature is undoubtedly a part of this principle.The post-independenceMalayalam literature witnessed a remarkable shift to modernism with the contribution of writers like M.T Vasudevan Nair, O.V Vijayan, Kakkanadan, M. Mukundan, Anand, VaikomMuhammedBasheer, Sethu and PunathilKunhabdullah among many other eminent authors. The researcherhas selected the magnum opus fiction KhasakinteIthihasam (self-translated as The Legends of Khasak) written by O.V Vijayan to analyze the aspect of cultural representation in the post-independence Malayalam literature. Key Words: Colonialism, Post-colonial literature, Cultural representation, Modernism. Post-independence Malayalam literature became more realistic with the advent of modernism. But since Kerala culture is built through the legends of 'vadakkanpattukal' (ballads of the north), 'thekkanpattukal' (ballads of the south), 'pulluvarpattukal' (traditional songs of pulluvar community), 'Mappilapattukal' (traditional songs by the Islamic community) and such other 'pattu' school of poetry and the vast array of myths and legends that form the crux of Dravidian and Aryan ancestry, there could never be a total deviation. Colonialism left its deep imprint upon almost all wakes of Kerala history and literature was no exception. -

MODERNISM, POSTMODERNISM, CREATIVITY, AND COLONIALISM IN MALAYALAM LITERATURE M.G.S. Narayanan It has become fashionable among critics to indulge in the fireworks of modernist and post-modernist Jargon, obviously in a bid to perplex tile poor reader. The modernist and the post-modernist in the West invented then- new phraseology to convey something different from their existing tradition, some new experience related to social change in the twentieth century, following the two World Wars which shattered all values and banished all finer sentiments from life. They were the victims of then’ own enlightenment faith in progress, equality and peace. Then’ predicament was unenviable. This agony gave birth to cynicism about human nature and the future of civilization. Bookish Indian scholars who never went through the hell and horror of such European war-experience, but blindly aped their counterparts in the West, cut sorry figures in their comic roles as critics. Tile pretentious and hollow preaching shows the distance between them and the realities of life among the people. The artist, the poet, the fiction writer has to be an organic part of life in the society in which lie lives and moves, breaths and thinks, and shared the passion of human existence. Living in an ivory tower, or pretending to live there, is an act of snobbery in a fools’ paradise, - no, in a fools’ inferno, if there is one. In Kerala, fortunately for us, we had a bunch of writers who were steeped in tile passions, witch moved the people - poverty, betrayal in love, inequality, dishonesty, perversion, ambition, disillusionment and frustration. -

Conclusion: Afterword---A Clarion Call Tahir Abbas In the shadows of the Himalayas stands the forgotten struggle of Jammu and Kashmir (Kashmir for short), whose plight remains precarious as India tightens its grip, placing the future of the territory in even more uncertainty and insecurity. The region of Kashmir is one of the most contested in the world. However, the vast majority of commentators, analysts, and social thinkers in the West routinely omit a careful anal- ysis while those in the region face immense pressures on their freedom to report and write on the issue. For too many, the matter is a bilat- eral question between India and Pakistan when the reality is an urgent and necessary need for the self-determination of the people of Kashmir. In presenting some closing arguments to this vital collection of scholarly input on the topic of social and political life in Jammu and Kashmir, I outline some distinct sociological concerns. I also take this opportunity to issue a clarion call to activists, scholars, and thinkers to place the needs and wants of Kashmir first and foremost, even if either neighbor—India or Pakistan—remains somewhat limited in its perspectives, whether this is by design or an accident of history. NATIONAL LITERATURE IN TRANSLATION Fragmented- Umashankar Joshi About the author: Umashankar joshi (1911-1988) is a Gujariti writer of prose fiction, poetry and drama, whose works display nationalist sentiments and social awareness as well as concern for the predicament of human life in society. His major works include Vasant Varsa, Gangotri and Pracina. Introduction : 'Fragmented' works with opposing ideas: of being fragmented and being whole, of love and hate, of memory and forgetfulness, of heat and coolness, and so on. The poet does not reach any definite conclusions, no solutions are provided for this state of affairs. Instead, the poem serves as a meditation on an individual's circumstances and in it can be read echoes of the fragmentary nature of the world itself. Summary :The poem has a circular structure: beginning and ending with the line 'I am fragmented'. The notion of being fragmented is one that is particular to the person as well as to the world of the poem. Throughout the poem, the fragmentation of the poet-persona is evoked through symbols, images and metaphors, each of which elaborates the idea and develops it further. For example, the first stanza has three images: of rhythm without metre; of a pattern upon a canvas and of breadcrumbs in a beggar's bowl. Abstract Mulk Raj Anand is the most famous name in the Indian writing in English. He takes the downtrodden society as the prime subject for his novels. The most of the fiction talk about the concern of lower caste and the inequality of them in the society. The current research paper focuses on the religion that plays the vital role to define the life of many people. The religion not only mend the relation with each other but guides each other towards the tolerance to accommodate. In the re-evaluation of the religion the research paper makes it clear for the reader that the different religion has the capacity to love each other. In the most of the cases the religion has internal issues and that affects the life of own people. The Hindu have many of the sub caste and due to lower and upper they torture the lower caste and treat oneself the superior one. Though Bakha is a lower caste but he is Hindu person but always get the inferior treatment throughout his life. The exploitation of upper class towards lower caste like physical, mental, social and religious never allow them to enter in the main steam of society. The work of Mulk Raj Anand gives the light on the characters of real life which suffers due to the caste issue and the provide the answer with the help of one religion to another.
