MICHAEL AND ATTIS Twenty years ago, when I was working on the apse mosaics of St. Sophia at Constantinople, I had ample opportunity to contemplate what is surely one of the most beautiful works of Byzantine art, I mean the image of the archangel Gabriel, who stands next to the enthroned Theotokos (Fig. 1). Gabriel is dressed in court costume; indeed, one can affirm that his costume is imperial, since he is wearing red buskins and holding a globe, the symbol of universal dominion. Yet neither the Bible nor orthodox doctrine as defined by the Fathers provides any justification for portraying an archangel in this guise; no matter how great was his dignity in heaven, he remained a minister and a messenger1. Only God could be described as the equivalent of the emperor. How was it then that Byzantine art, which showed extreme reluctance to give to Christ, the pambasileus, any visible attributes of royalty other than the throne, granted these very attributes to archangels, who had no claim to them? An enquiry I undertook at the time (and left unpublished) suggested the following conclusions: 1. The Byzantines themselves, I mean the medieval Byzantines, could offer no reasonable explanation of the iconography of archangels and seemed to be unaware of its meaning. On the subject of the globe I found only two texts. One was an unedited opuscule by Michael Psellos, who, quite absurdly, considered it to denote the angels' rapidity of movement; "for", he says, "the sphere is such an object that, touching as it does only a tiny portion of the ground, is able in less than an instant to travel in any direction"2. -

The subject of the present dissertation is the terracotta figurines of Amisos’ workshop which is in its most productive period during Mithridates Eupator kingship. The study has been focused on the figurines in relation with the economic, political and religious life of Amisos. Aim of our research was to find out in what extent the city’s economy and culture as the political circumstances, during the period of its activity, affected the production of the amisian terracotta workshop. Before dealing with the main subject has been considered necessary an introduction concerning the location, the geography, the foundation and the history of Amisos in order to be understood the general historical and cultural context that effected the evolvement and the activity of the terracotta workshop. Moreover, the following analysis of Amisos’ economy as the description of the occupations and the products of the amisians demonstrate on the one hand that the production and the exportation of the terracotta figurines were part of Amisos’ economy and on the other hand that the coroplasts of the amisian workshop represent through the selection of their subjects the city’s economical life. The forth chapter deals with the figurines as products of the amisian workshop. However, the lack of scientific treatment coupled with the fact that the figurines are partly preserved and have been diffused all over the world, impedes their study. -

INSCRIPTIONSFROM ATTICA (PLATE 15: b, c, d) JTN THE course of the years 1947, 1948, and 1949 the undersignedhave made a series of excursions in Attica, as time and their other duties permitted, for the purpose of making squeezes of inscriptions in the outlying areaS-for the collection at the Institute for Advanced Study. Among the many inscriptions already known, a few new pieces turned up which we publish below. We add also a few comments on some previously published texts. 1. Dedication to Pythian Apollo (Plate 15, b) Church of the Panagia, Merenda, southeast of Markopoulo, site of the ancient deme of Myrrhinous. Found in June 1948 lying in front of the church where it had probably been at least since 1929 to judge by the graffito on the face. Probably dis- covered somewhere in the immediate neighborhood. Brought to the Epigraphical Museum, Athens, March 1949; now E.M. 13,120. The stone is a rectangular pillar of Hymettian marble which tapers slightly towards the top. It is broken below and it has been re-worked above at the back to a rough curving surface as if someone had started to make it into a capital for the window column of a church. The sides are dressed with a toothed chisel at the edges and are smooth picked at the center. The back is rough picked. The letters run vertically from top to bottom. The inscription is complete at the right (lower) end, and only a little is missing at the left (top) as the meter shows. The inscribed face is marred by a modern graffito consisting of the name Stelios Katroulis, the date 1929, a cross and a steamboat. -

In the past years the BEGR had often summarized publications which were not primarily of epigraphie nature, thus tending to expand into an unavoidably incomplete bibliography of Greek religion. From this issue on we return to the original scope of this bulletin, whieh is to provide information on new epigraphie finds, new interpretations of inscriptions, epigraphieal corpora, and studies based p;imarily on the epigraphie material. Only if we focus on these types of books and articles, will we be able to present the newpublications without delays and, hopefully, without too many omissions. -

Parts of the Athenian countryside and even the city itself were occupied by foreign troops. This loss of control affected the city’s political, economic, social, cultural, and religious life. Since Cleisthenic times, relations between political units and religious communities had become institutionalised through specific cults. Other cult places of relevance to the larger community and therefore with a catchment area that exceeded a deme, e.g. Eleusis, were also affected, as they lay within the occupied territories. This partial inaccessibility of the countryside risked the disruption of religious duties. The project “Cult and Crisis: The Sacred Landscape of Attica and its Correlation to Political Topography” aims to identify potentially affected cult places with no limitations regarding their possible catchment area by analysing their placement in relation to foreign military bases. Alterations in cult practice can plausibly be detected in changes ranging from cessation to the rerouting of ritual movement or the establishment of substitute cult places. As these “solutions” rarely feature in written sources, our GIS-based approach will focus on material remains from sanctuaries. Although an object’s use for ritual practice cannot be deduced with certainty, the distribution of finds certainly attests to human activity. This contribution presents a trial of this approach, taking the Sounion area as its case study. -

Forward and Backward Private Searchable Encryption from Constrained Cryptographic Primitives Raphael Bost∗ Brice Minaudy Olga Ohrimenkoz Abstract Using dynamic Searchable Symmetric Encryption, a user with limited storage resources can securely outsource a database to an untrusted server, in such a way that the database can still be searched and updated efficiently. For these schemes, it would be desirable that updates do not reveal any information a priori about the modifications they carry out, and that deleted results remain inaccessible to the server a posteriori. If the first property, called forward privacy, has been the main motivation of recent works, the second one, backward privacy, has been overlooked. In this paper, we study for the first time the notion of backward privacy for searchable encryption. After giving formal definitions for different flavors of backward privacy, we present several schemes achieving both forward and backward privacy, with various efficiency trade-offs. Our constructions crucially rely on primitives such as constrained pseudo-random functions and punc- turable encryption schemes. Using these advanced cryptographic primitives allows for a fine-grained control of the power of the adversary, preventing her from evaluating functions on selected inputs, or de- crypting specific ciphertexts. In turn, this high degree of control allows our SSE constructions to achieve the stronger forms of privacy outlined above. As an example, we present a framework to construct forward-private schemes from range-constrained pseudo-random functions. Finally, we provide experimental results for implementations of our schemes, and study their practical efficiency. 1 Introduction Symmetric Searchable Encryption (SSE) enables a client to outsource the storage of private data to an untrusted server, while retaining the ability to issue search queries over the outsourced data. -
