The appointment of a Residentiary to be Canon Chancellor

he of is seeking to appoint a Residentiary Canon who will also serve Tas Chancellor. The appointee will be an experienced priest with energy, imagination, and resilience who can demonstrate exceptional theological expertise, and evidence of strong strategic and leadership experience. (S)he will welcome the opportunity to work collaboratively within the Chapter, with colleagues, and in directing the Cathedral’s Engagement and Learning Activities.

In his appendix to his Bishop’s Charge to the Cathedral (2016) the Bishop writes of the teaching ministry of the Cathedral: ‘The modern age presents so much potential for human flourishing, but with an equally amazing range of threats to our future. The role of teaching, as an expression of curiosity about every aspect of life, is essential to the life and purpose of a Cathedral, if it is to be fully alive to the pulse and purposes of our times.’

The appointment of a Canon Chancellor gives the Chapter the opportunity to build on the strong tradition of education in Chichester, affirming the Cathedral’s dynamic role as the seat of the Bishop and a place of serious theological conversation and enquiry. Particular areas of responsibility

Our programmes of lectures and opportunities for study are well- received, and the Chancellor will work with the Bishop and others to foster innovative opportunities for theology and reflection amongst a wide audience across the Diocese.

The Cathedral’s Learning and Engagement provision presently offers routes for individuals, schools, colleges and other organisations to engage with the Cathedral and the Christian faith, including school visits, GCSE and A-level study days, and adult learning. New programmes include work in support of vulnerable children, young people and families and learning activity for adults with support needs.

The Chancellor currently oversees the Cathedral library. A grant from HLF has enabled the refurbishment of the library to a very high standard, and there is the opportunity to develop the library as a resource for study.

The Cathedral welcomes hundreds of thousands of visitors each year and work on the visitor interpretation of the Cathedral is much needed. This is a major project which has barely begun, and the leadership and insights of the Chancellor will be instrumental in finding new and imaginative ways to engage people with the Christian faith and enable the Cathedral to present the Christian story in ways which will awaken the curiosity of our audiences. The Chapter, Worship and Residence

The Chapter (the , three Residentiary Canons, the Communar, a representative of the College of Canons and three lay members) is responsible for the corporate governance of the Cathedral. For a Residentiary Canon who also holds executive responsibility (as does the Canon Chancellor), this means a commitment to collective decision-making and corporate values, balancing that with the needs of their particular areas of responsibility.

The Dean and Residentiary Canons are committed to pray together in the Daily Offices and share Sunday and weekday Eucharistic presidency and preaching, with the and Chancellor sharing the responsibilities of Residence alternating weekly. The formal role of the Canon in Residence is laid out in the Cathedral Statutes: in practice the Canon in Residence officiates at Mattins each day, leads the intercessions at , and presides at the 8am Eucharist on Sunday.

This is an exciting time to come to : a relatively new staff team is working well together to refresh and renew the Cathedral’s life, and a number of new initiatives are taking shape. We are committed to ‘finding rich and imaginative ways to bring the narrative of human experience into harmony with the truth of revelation,’ (Bishop’s Visitation Charge) and we look forward to welcoming a new Chancellor with fresh insights and a lively faith who with us will relish the joy of the quest and the excitement of the journey.
