STEiN2 AND RICHARD D. LUMSDEN:! Laboratory of Parasitology, Department of Biology, Tnlane University, New Orleans, Louisiana ABSTRACT: Electron microscopy of encysting A. leighi metacercariae in the btdbus arteriosus of Poecilia (= Mollienesia) latipinna (LeSeuer) indicates that the material composing the cyst wall is of parasite origin. The bulbus tissue bordering the cysts includes endothelial cells, fibroblasts and a diffuse mesh- work of reticular collagen fibers. Immediately following the penetration of the btilbtiv endothelium by the parasite, a thin primary lamella condenses around the cere-aria. Additional matrix material is then added to the inner surface as granular secretions from the metacercarial tegument. A moderate fibrosis of the surrounding host tissue is evidenced by some infiltration of fibroblasts and increased density of retic- ular collagen, though this collagen does not form an integral component of the cyst wall. In heavy infec- tions, the metacercarial cysts severely occlude the primary lumenal space of the bulbiix. In such cases, there is some recanali/ation of the endothelium, providing secondary channels for blood flow. No cyto- logical indication of an inflammatory or immune response was apparent at any time during the encyst- ment process. Abstract: A comprehensive and up to date summary of the literature on the helminth parasites of lizards and amphisbaenians from South America is herein presented. One-hundred eighteen lizard species from twelve countries were reported in the literature harboring a total of 155 helminth species, being none acanthocephalans, 15 cestodes, 20 trematodes and 111 nematodes. Of these, one record was from Chile and French Guiana, three from Colombia, three from Uruguay, eight from Bolivia, nine from Surinam, 13 from Paraguay, 12 from Venezuela, 27 from Ecuador, 17 from Argentina, 39 from Peru and 103 from Brazil. The present list provides host, geographical distribution (with the respective biome, when possible), site of infection and references from the parasites. In total, 52 nematode species parasitizing birds in Armenia are reported. Most of the reported species of nematodes are quite common in birds outside of Armenia. One species (Desmidocercella incognita from great cormorant) was first identified in Armenia.

The examined nematodes are predominantly parasites of fishes. Their analyses provided well-supported trees allowing the study of phylogenetic relationships among some spirurine nematodes. The present results support the placement of Cucullanidae at the base of the suborder Spirurina and, based on the position of the genus Philonema (subfamily Philoneminae) forming a sister group to Skrjabillanidae (thus Philoneminae should be elevated to Philonemidae), the paraphyly of the Philometridae. Comparison of a large number of sequences of representatives of the latter family supports the paraphyly of the genera Philometra, Philometroides and Dentiphilometra. The validity of the newly included genera Afrophilometra and Carangi- nema is not supported. These results indicate geographical isolation has not been the cause of speciation in this parasite group and no coevolution with fish hosts is apparent. On the contrary, the group of South-American species ofAlinema , Nilonema and Rumai is placed in an independent branch, thus markedly separated from other family members.

Seis nematodos (2 machos y 4 hembras) fueron colectados e identificados como S. tendo. 2 Laboratorio de Microbiología y Parasitología. El hallazgo de este nematodo constituye el primer registro en el Perú.

DEY SARKAR Zoological Survey of India, Oalcutta (With 2 Text-figures) INTRODUCTION The authors undertook a faunistic survey of some areas of Solan District, Himachal Pradesh, during December, 197 6-January, 1977, in the course of which some nematodes were collected. The present paper deals with this material which comprises eleven species of nine genera of eight families. Though the material is numerically insignificant, it is nevertheless interesting in that it not only furnishes unrecorded morpho­ logical variations for some and new locality records for ~1l the known species reported here, but also yields one new species. As not much is known about the helminth fauna of Himachal Pradesh, the present paper initiates an attempt to study this fauna of the area. All measurements are in millimeters. In this article we determined scientifically the biological characteristics of the life cycle of nematode worms Aprocta, parasites of birds. The genus Aprocta comprises nematodes parasitising eye sockets and nasal and other cavities in the bodies of birds from various ecological groups. Currently, 30 species are identified to comprise the genus. Morgan* Abstract Information is presented pertaining to 176 registered type specimen lots of 103 species or subspecies of worms held in the Western Australian Museum collection. A further 28 specimen lots of 15 species or subspecies are of uncertain or invalid type status. Original authors and subsequent emendations are indicated. Four type lots could not be located. Introduction At the time of writing, the Western Australian Museum (WAM) does not possess a Department responsible solely for worms. Worms are presently lodged with the Department of Carcinology. A catalogue of WAM crustacean type specimens has been prepared by Jones, D. (1986) and this paper provides similar information for the type specimens of worms (Phyla Platyhelminthes, Nematoda and Annelida) in the WAM collection. The format is similar to that ofJones, D. (19.86). Phyla and classes are arranged in taxonomic sequence based upon Barnes (1974). While polychaete orders are used by some authors (e.g. Fauchald, 1977), family sequence is used for con­ venience in this paper, based upon Day (1967) and Hutchings and Murray (1984). Oligochaete orders and families are based on Brinkhurst and Jamieson (1972). Genera are ordered alphabetically within families and species alphabetically within genera. Species are listed by their original published name. Discrepancies between labelled or registered information and that cited in publications are indicated in Remarks, as are changes to nomenclature subsequent to original description and, where determinable, locality of other type material.

Total five nematode worms were detected in the body cavities of two out of the twenty birds necropsied, and they were identified using morphological features, light and scanning electron microscope (SEM), and molecular (18S rRNA analysis) methods. The nematodes were all female Diplotriaena manipoli and had numerous eggs at different developmental stages in the uterus. The nematodes were long and slender measuring about 123-145 mm. The eight submedian cephalic papillae were arranged into four large, outer papillae and four small, inner-circle papillae.
