June 2019 Farewell By Pastor Ken Ediger Rachel & I want to thank you for the last 31 years we have been allowed to serve at North Oak Community Church. It is very difficult to say farewell to people with whom we have ministered and loved, and been loved by. The struggle that Rachel and I went through when we began to even think about leaving this church family reminds me of the passage in Acts 20, where Paul said an emotional good-bye to the elders of the church in Ephesus. He reminded them of the ministry they had shared. He encouraged them to be confident about the future. He blessed them and committed them to God. I am only the second lead pastor North Oak has had in its 41-year history. Pastor Steve Fast and his wife Janice loved and led this church family to become a close-knit, Bible-centered, Jesus-loving, people-serving group of about 80 people. This church called Rachel and me to serve as their pastoral couple in August 1988, and they challenged me to teach the Word and love children. By God’s grace, together we have excelled in that and much more. The increasing numbers necessitated, expanding our facilities three times. Our Children’s and Youth Ministries now have excellent, dedicated paid staff to equip and enable a whole host of “ministers” to raise up generations of spiritual champions. The Bible is still front and center in all we do, exalting Jesus by calling and discipling all to follow Him. Over the years we have “sent” hundreds of people to serve in other communities as equipped pastors, elders, deacons, youth and children’s leaders, worship leaders, small group leaders, and Bible teachers. We are strategically and financially connected to 15 full time global workers around the world. All this and much more we have done together with you to the glory of God! In 31 years, I’ve watched children grow up. I’ve baptized, performed marriages, performed too many funerals. I’ve visited hospitals and shut ins. Together, we realized a few dreams, lived through a few trials, and persevered. While we are leaving you, there is one who remains constant: Jesus Christ. Jesus has been here from the beginning and will be with you for the rest of time. If through the power of the Holy Spirit you allow Jesus to guide you, our North Oak church family will always be on mission. It may not look like the church we have today. There may be difficult decisions that need to be made. But a passion for our Lord and Savior will see you through any future challenges. I encourage you to love and support new pastoral leadership as you have loved and supported me. I believe you are ready to flourish in ways we have not yet experienced. And so, in the words of Paul to the elders in Ephesus, “Now I commit you to God and to the word of his grace, which can build you up and give you an inheritance among all those who are sanctified.” Acts 20:32 (NIV84) PAGE 2 Vision, Action and Transition By: Dave Buller, Associate Pastor Vision is essential. In a recent Sunday school class, we studied the first chapter of Nehemiah, a book in the Bible. God used Nehemiah in a powerful way to rebuild the walls around Jerusalem. God gave him a vision and a burden for restoring the wall. He empowered Nehemiah. He blessed Nehemiah. He used Nehemiah to lead the Jews to do something incredible…something that could only be accomplished if they worked together towards a common purpose. As a church, we have a vision: Grow in Christ, Live Connected, Take Jesus to Others. As we read the Bible, it is easy to see that this is right in alignment with what God desires. Putting vision into action—having a strategy to accomplish vision—is as important as the vision itself. If you subtract strategy and action from vision, all you are left with is a dream. Adding strategy and action to vision is like adding fuel to the engine—it will burst into life and puts the horsepower to work. Our leaders and pastoral staff spend time and effort thinking about our church’s vision and strategy. We make decisions directed at accomplishing our church’s vision. We make mistakes, but we believe that our church’s vision of Growing in Christ, Living Connected, and Taking Jesus to Others is so important that we are willing to take some risks to see it happen. We believe that God uses our mistakes to teach us and to build our character. Regardless of our success percentage, our resolve is steadfast, our commitment unwavering, our hope unabashedly held: we exist for Jesus’ glory. We are going to spread His love and the Gospel message. We are going to raise up leaders: disciple-makers composed of singles, widows and widowers, parents and families, college students, youth, kids, adults of all socio-economic groups, regardless of race or distinctives. We are going to reach those who have not yet heard the Gospel message. North Oak is a safe place to come to and to grow in your faith. We are a church committed to mission. We are desperate for a God-honoring vision, and we will set our heart, soul, mind, and strength on Him. We invite you to join us in this. Nehemiah and his contemporaries were able to complete an incredible task because they worked together. We need your help. Grow in the faith. Participate in Sunday school, small groups, youth group, weekly worship. Ask the Holy Spirit how He wants you to get involved with our church. Seek out leaders and share with them what the Holy Spirit has laid on your heart. “God gives us His vision when we are desperate. He speaks to us when our whole heart and mind and soul is set on Him. When we are really hungry and thirsty for God, we find Him…I am convinced that a major reason we do not discover God’s vision for our churches is that we are content with business as usual. Vision must be fueled by a holy discontent with the status quo.” (From the book Transitioning by Dan Southerland) NLT 5 Psalm 37:5 Commit everything you do to the Lord. Trust him, and he will help you. The next couple of months mark some significant transitions for our church. As I write this, Pastor Jeff has just 11 days left. Pastor Ken will be finishing his role here at the end of July. It has been an honor to work beside these two men, and their absence will be felt. These men have been “spiritual fathers” to many people and to me. I am reminded of the words of Jesus: NIV John 14:18 18I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. I am excited for what our future holds. I believe that the Lord has a season of great blessing in store for our church. He will “come” to us. I am with you on this journey. Together, and with the grace of God, we will do great things. Grace and peace to you in Jesus’ name. PAGE 3 Dear NOCC Family, What an amazing time I have had in this church for the past 24 years. I first walked into NOCC September of 1995. I was welcomed into the church family by so many wonderful people and knew that this was where I was supposed to be. Within a couple of weeks of being here, Pastor Pat took me out for lunch and asked me if I would help him with the youth group. I can count on one hand the number of Wednesday nights that I have missed since that first time I attended in 1995. In 1999, I took a semester off of my masters degree study at FHSU to go to Rosedale Bible Institute in Ohio. While I was there, the church called me to see if I would accept the position of part-time youth pastor. I agreed and started on January 1, 2000. Since that time I have taught about 1,500 lessons, and taken students on somewhere between 120 and 130 mission trips, conferences and concerts. It’s been a lot of fun working with some amazing leaders and students. This church has always been a blessing to serve, and it has been so good to our family. We will continue to attend and serve the church to the best of our ability. I am excited for the next chapter in youth ministry as Dustin Mulkey takes over and launches the ministry forward, helping it grow and prosper under his guidance. I ask that you support Dustin and pray for and encourage him as you have for me. I do ask that you continue to pray for our family as we transition, and that God would provide for us in the next stage of life. Jeff Neher A Legacy Worth Celebrating On May 19th, over 200 people gathered from all over Kansas to celebrate Jeff Neher and his family for their 19 years of ministry at North Oak. It was a beautiful event full of love, laughter, and of course, tears. Many people shared stories of memories they’ve made with Jeff throughout the years. We were able to present the Neher family with a gift of $1,300 that will be used to send their family on a trip, and have money left over to help cover some of their expenses.
