Lunsford, Book Companion Site for The Everyday Writer Palma 1 Outline Thesis statement: Recent films strongly suggest that the hero of the twenty-first century will most likely appear not as a Hollywood star or a mythical manifestation but as a combination of mortal and machine--in short, a cyborg. I. Originally relying on earlier heroes from the realms of myth and history, Hollywood studios gradually developed a system for transforming actors into star- heroes. A. Moviegoers began to identify a favorite hero-character with the particular actor who played him or her. B. The studios recognized the financial possibilities of the mass idolization of a commercialized hero and set out to manufacture this “product” efficiently. 1. The persona that a studio developed to turn an actor into a star was the only public identity that actor was allowed to have. 2. Early examples of the star-hero included Douglas Fairbanks and Mary Pickford. II. As the studio system disintegrated in the 1950s and 1960s, and the stars lost the publicity shield it had provided, the problems of stardom became obvious to the public. A. Films from this period show that the movie industry was self-mockingly aware of its pitfalls. 1.Sunset Boulevard showed what happened when a hero-image was no longer popular and the system abandoned the star it had made. Abstract The article provides an overview of descriptions of total solar eclipses in different literature forms, rites and toponyms of Slavs. It is shown that the solar eclipse had a prominent role in the worldview of the tribes. Explanations of some terms of Slavic outlook are given with suggestions for the correct terminology. A program for further investigation in Slavic and other people’s culture is proposed. In order to parameterize the detector for such a newly-proposed MERO, the evaluation of the instrument’s entrance pupil irradiance (EPI) is of great importance. The motivation of this work is to build an EPI estimating model for a simplified single-pixel MERO instrument. The rationale of this model is to sum the contributions of every location in the MERO-viewed region on the Earth’s top of atmosphere (TOA) to the MERO sensor’s EPI, taking into account the anisotropy in the longwave radiance at the Earth TOA. Such anisotropy could be characterized by the TOA anisotropic factors, which can be derived from the Clouds and the Earth’s Radiant Energy System (CERES) angular distribution models (ADMs). -

More people have started to travel to view annular eclipses of late, taking advantage of the fact that because it is not the huge draw that total eclipses are, crowds are pretty much non-existent for annular eclipses. It is also due to eclipse chasers who are retiring from their jobs or any eclipse chaser who has the desire to travel to new places and experience another location in the world. A few chasers are picking viewing sites nearer the edge of the path of annularity in order to view and record Baily’s Beads, and in some cases, also to see solar prominences and even on rarer occasions, the chromosphere. In recent years, serious eclipse chasers have done great work making chromospheric observations during annular eclipses, even long-duration eclipses like that on 2010 January 15. On the shortest duration of annular eclipses, there was the remarkable eclipse of 1984 May 20, where a few of us witnessed and imaged the entire chromosphere in the “11-second” annular eclipse in the USA, where a remarkable 160,000-kilometer-high prominence and over 100 Baily’s beads, were observed.
