Who Are the Grey Nuns
Fact Sheet Grey Nuns of the Sacred Heart Who are the Grey Nuns? The Grey Nuns of the Sacred Heart are a community of Roman Catholic consecrated women who strive to create a compassionate world through prayer, ministry and advocacy. There are 111 Grey Nuns of the Sacred Heart. Fifty-nine Grey Nuns reside on the Yardley, Pennsylvania Motherhouse campus. The Grey Nuns were founded by Marguerite d’Youville in Montreal, Canada in 1737. Marguerite and her followers consecrated themselves to God and served the poor and the most neglected members of society. Marguerite d’Youville died in 1771. At her beatification in 1959, Pope John XXIII gave her the title “Mother of Universal Charity.” In 1990, Marguerite was canonized by Pope John Paul II, becoming the first native Canadian to be elevated to sainthood. What is the mission of the Grey Nuns of the Sacred Heart? In the spirit of Saint Marguerite d’Youville, our foundress, the Grey Nuns of the Sacred Heart strive to be signs of God’s unconditional love as we collaborate to create a more just and compassionate world. Why are they called “Grey” Nuns? Marguerite D’Youville was the widow of a disreputable man who was involved in illegal liquor trading and she was often unfairly judged by her husband’s unsavory reputation. When she and her sister followers shocked class-conscious Montreal society by dedicating their lives to serving the poor, the women were jeered as “Les Soeurs Grises” meaning “the tipsy sisters,” (the French word “gris” has two meanings, “grey” or the euphemistic “tipsy”). -

Statement of Votes for the 38th Provincial General Election June 3, 2003 Relevé des suffrages pour la 38e élection générale provinciale le 3 juin 2003 Historical Summaries/ Comptes rendus d’élection précédentes Summary of Election Procedures in Manitoba 1870 to 1999 In examining historical election results it is important to be aware of the legislation that existed at the time the elections were held. What follows is a summary of the evolution of electoral law in Manitoba designed to accompany the Historical Summary that follows. Many of the dates given are for the year the new procedures were first used. In many cases, however, the legislation was passed in the years preceding the election. 1870 • The standard voting procedure was public declaration of one's preference at a constituency meeting. The electoral officer recorded the votes, and the simple plurality (or 'first-past-the-post') system was used to elect members for the 24 seats in the Legislative Assembly. • Only males owning property were eligible to vote. 1888 • The property qualification was eliminated. • The secret ballot was used for the first time. • Residence requirement raised to six months in province and one month in the electoral division. 1892 • Growth in population and territorial expansion were reflected by an increase in the Assembly's seats. By 1892, there were 40 seats in the Assembly. • Persons receiving a government salary of $350 or more annually could not vote. • Fee to file nomination papers is $200. 1894 • Residency requirements changed to three months in electoral division and one year in province. 1900 • Persons receiving government salary could vote. -

Analyzing the Parallelism between the Rise and Fall of Baseball in Quebec and the Quebec Secession Movement By Daniel Greene Senior Project Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for Graduation Department of History Union College June, 2011 i Greene, Daniel Analyzing the Parallelism between the Rise and Fall of Baseball in Quebec and the Quebec Secession Movement My Senior Project examines the parallelism between the movement to bring baseball to Quebec and the Quebec secession movement in Canada. Through my research I have found that both entities follow a very similar timeline with highs and lows coming around the same time in the same province; although, I have not found any direct linkage between the two. My analysis begins around 1837 and continues through present day, and by analyzing the histories of each movement demonstrates clearly that both movements followed a unique and similar timeline. -

Timeline of French Manitoba (1712-1993) 1712-1713: Hudson’s Bay Company (HBC) employees in York Factory indicate in their report to London that [French] Canadians were trading on the shores of Lake Winnipeg, harming the HBC’s own trade. 1738: La Vérendrye reaches the current site of St. Boniface. French Canadian traders and voyageurs coming from Lower Canada use La Vérendrye’s route on their way to Western Canada. Ca. 1780-1810: A Métis identity develops among a distinct community. 1812: The first Scottish and Irish colonists recruited by Lord Selkirk arrive at the Forks. 1816: The Métis declare themselves a nation, following the Battle of Seven Oaks. Perhaps one of the first written references to the Métis Nation was made by Alexander MacDonnell, in a letter to Duncan Cameron dated March 13th, 1816. 1818: Arrival of the Rev. Norbert Provencher, the Rev. Sévère Dumoulin, and seminarian Guillaume Edge to the Red River. Permanent establishment of the Catholic Church in Western Canada. 1822: Creation of the Council of Assiniboia, a local government put in place by the Hudson’s Bay Company to assist the company’s governor in running the Red River Colony. The Council performed mainly judicial functions. 1829: Establishment of St. Boniface’s first girls’ school. The school was placed under the management of two lay women, Angélique and Marguerite Nolin. 1835: The Council of Assiniboia is transformed into a legislative and executive assembly. To ensure the enforcement of laws and facilitate administration, the Council creates committees, establishes courts, and organizes a police force. Several Francophones, Canadian and Métis, were called on to fill various positions in the judiciary and the police. -
