RELIQUES OF THE ANGLO-SAXON CHURCHES OF ST. BRIDGET AND ST. HILDEBURGA, WEST KIRKBY, CHESHIRE. By Henry Ecroyd Smith. (BEAD IST DEOBMBEB, 1870.) THE Parish of West Kirkby (now West Kirby), lying 18 miles N.W. of Chester city, is one of the most important in the hundred of Wirral, and occupies the whole of its north western angle. Dr. Ormerod describes its first quarter as comprising the townships of West Kirkby and Newton-cum- Larton, with that of Grange, Great Caldey or Caldey Grange ; second, the townships of Frankby and Greasby ; third, those of Great and Little Meols, with Hoose ; fourth, the township of Little Caldey.* Originally Kirklye, or, settlement at the Church, it became " West Kirkby," to distinguish it from "Kirkby-in-Walley," at the opposite corner of the peninsula of Wirral, now com monly known as Wallasey. Each of these extensive parishes possessed two Churches, those of Wallasey lying the one in Kirkby-in-Walley, the other on the Leasowes and near the sea, which ultimately destroyed it and engulphed the site together with that of its burial-ground. For further informa tion on this head, Bishop Gastrell's " Notitia," Dr. Ormerod's " History of the County,"\ and Lyson's " Cheshire,"% may be consulted. Gastrell's Notitia. The sources involved here are Welsh and other Celtic tradition, Latin texts, French romances and other works from the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, Malory’s and Tennyson’s representation of the Queen, and finally Guinevere in the twentieth century in Bradley’s and Miles’s novels as well as in movies. The main sources in the first three chapters are of European origins; however, there is a focus on French and British works. There is a lack of study of German sources, which could bring different insights into the character of Guinevere. The purpose of this essay is to analyze the evolution of Queen Guinevere and to point out that through the works of Malory and Tennyson, she has been misrepresented and there is more to her than her adulterous relation with Lancelot. This essay is exclusively focused on Queen Guinevere and her analysis involves other characters like Arthur, Lancelot, Merlin, Enide, and more. First the Queen is only represented as Arthur’s unfaithful wife, and her abduction is narrated. We have here the basis of her character. Chrétien de Troyes develops this basic character into a woman of important values about love and chivalry. -

BOOK REVIEWS Manuel Vázquez Montalbán (2003). Erec y Enide. Ed. Debolsillo: Barcelona. 253 pages (in Spanish) ISBN 84-9759-445-2 (vol. 511/1) reviewed by Fiona Taler (Flinders University) This review is offered in memory of don Manuel Vázquez Montalbán, who died tragically in Bangkok on 17 October 2003 on his return home after a lecture tour of Australia and New Zealand. His kindness, intelligence and ever present humour during his visit to Flinders University are fondly remembered. The use of myth to illustrate the malaise of present day society is neither new nor original in contemporary literature, but it is not often attended by analysis of such scholarly splendour as it is within this text. Vázquez Montalbán’s novel Erec y Enide is named after the work of the same name by Chrétien de Troyes (ca. 1175), in which the adventures of Geraint (Erec) are narrated as he drives his unfortunate wife, Enid (Enide) through innumerable dangers in order to prove his love for her as well as his valour as a knight of Arthur’s round table. In Vázquez Montalbán’s novel, Chrétien’s text is the most elaborately worked, but it is not the only Arthurian myth represented. The novel draws upon the story of Lancelot and Guinevere, the philosophy of Percival and, insistently, the forbidden love between Tristan and Iseult, in order to illustrate the inevitable and complete isolation of the individual within what one would normally consider a well integrated society. Thus, upon reflecting on the Arthurian world through the rich pages of Erec y Enide, one is made aware of the futility of knightly endeavour and, by analogy, of the futility of endeavour in the contemporary world. -

Dolgorukova1 СEST ROMANZ FIST CRESTÏENS CHRÉTIEN DE TROYES AND THE BIRTH OF THE FRENCH NOVEL2 The paper addresses three controversial issues in two romances by Chrétien de Troyes - Yvain, or the Knight with the Lion and Lancelot, or the Knight of the Cart. Both romances were written around 1176-1180 and because of their narrative continuity and complementarity could be considered as a diptych. First, we examine the evolution of Chretien’s conception of love, “mysteriously” changing from his first romances to Lancelot; then we enter into the debate between celtisants and their critics about the Celtic influence in Chretien and consider Celtic sources of the two romances; we conclude the article, tracing out the fairy tale paradigm in both romances, which helps us reveal new meanings of the cart and the lion, operating as magic agents in the romances. Liturgical Calendar 2020-2021 of the Celtic Orthodox Church 1 Liturgical Calendar of the Celtic Orthodox Church 2020-2021 Translated from the French, published by Éditions Hol Levenez Le Bois Juhel 56130 Saint-Dolay, France Cover page: Icon of Saint John the Baptist 2020-2021 Introduction The calendar of the Celtic Orthodox Church begins on the first Sunday of November after All Saints Day (November 1st). This choice reconciles two traditions, one linked to the Syrian Orthodox Church tradition, which begins the liturgical year on the first Sunday of November (after All Saints Day), and the other according to an ancient Western non- Roman custom. It presents the Saints of the Universal Church as well as the principal Saints who have illuminated the history of the Celtic Orthodox Church. The Liturgical year opens before us as a permanent invitation to deepen our spirituality. The calendar answers, “present,” to the call to deepen our faith in Christ Jesus. The Sunday and feast-day readings are an inheritance of many centuries that belongs to our spiritual heritage. The liturgical cycle was developed over a period of time and set up by our Fathers under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. It is both a divine and human work, providentially proposed to our generation, in order that we may rediscover our spiritual roots in a world that is becoming more and more dechristianized. In this sense this calendar is prophetic for, drawing from ancient Western sources from before the Carolingian reforms, it is surprisingly suited to our times. This appears very clearly when we let ourselves be guided by this grouping together of feasts and readings that give rhythm to our daily life. -

EC 24/10/2013 Chapter Two The Limits of Translation in the Writing of Marie de France Like some of the authors mentioned in the previous chapter, the writer known today as ‘Marie de France’ ranks among a not inconsiderable number of women writing in Anglo-Norman England in the late twelfth century.1 It is by no means to be taken for granted that the same author composed all of the works conventionally attributed to Marie, though there are certainly some interesting similarities in the way this signature is associated with posterity and memory in different texts.2 Though I will for the sake of convenience retain this authorial designation in the present chapter and will examine together texts identified with ‘Marie’, I shall also emphasize the extent to which some of the concerns with remembrance and written posterity often associated with Marie de France’s work are shared with contemporary writers working in the French of England. I will also tease out differences as well as similarities between the attitudes to translation in different works associated with Marie. As I will suggest, there is, I think, a case to be made for seeing certain elements of the engagement with translation and memory in works attributed to Marie as distinctive, but this does not amount to a single attitude to translation and the distinctiveness of the approaches taken in these texts comes into better perspective when considered as part of the wider literary context in which they were produced. Attributed to Marie are several French works, all of which make some reference to translation: the Lais (which claim to derive from oral Breton stories), the Fables (translated from Latin, or possibly from a lost Anglo-Saxon text) and the Espurgatoire (a translation of an identifiable Latin source). -

RTE: Father Maxime, can you orient us to Brittany? FR. MAXIME: Yes. Today we commonly use the term Great Britain, but not many people realize that its counterpart across the Channel, Little Britain or Brittany, was more culturally tied to Cornwall, Wales, and Ireland than to Gaul (France). Christianity came here very early. In Little Brittany, also called Amorica, the very first missionaries were two 3rd-century martyrs, Rogasian and Donasian. Igor: Didn’t Christianity take root earlier in France? FR. MAXIME: Yes, it did. When the Church was first established in France, there was no France as we know it now; it was called Gallia (Gaul). Brittany, where I am from, and which is now a part of northern France, was then another region, a Celtic culture. But in the Roman, Latin region of Gaul there were great early saints – not apostles, but certainly disciples of the apostles, the second and third generation. -

Breton Patronyms and the British Heroic Age Gary D. German Centre de Recherche Bretonne et Celtique Introduction Of the three Brythonic-speaking nations, Brittany, Cornwall and Wales, it is the Bretons who have preserved the largest number of Celtic family names, many of which have their origins during the colonization of Armorica, a period which lasted roughly from the fourth to the eighth centuries. The purpose of this paper is to present an overview of the Breton naming system and to identify the ways in which it is tied to the earliest Welsh poetic traditions. The first point I would like to make is that there are two naming traditions in Brittany today, not just one. The first was codified in writing during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries and it is this system that has given us the official hereditary family names as they are recorded in the town halls and telephone directories of Brittany. Although these names have been subjected to marked French orthographic practices, they reflect, in a fossilized form, the Breton oral tradition as it existed when the names were first set in writing over 400 years ago. For this reason, these names often contain lexical items that are no longer understood in the modern spoken language. We shall return to this point below. The second naming system stems directly from the oral tradition as it has come down to us today. Unlike the permanent hereditary names, it is characterized by its ephemeral, personal and extremely flexible nature. Such names disappear with the death of those who bear them.
