GRIZ FOOTBALL 2017

Montana had a pretty good football team at the start of the 1920 season. The Grizzlies opened the year with its biggest win in program history, a 133-0 drubbing over (now) Carroll College – to this day the largest score UM has ever put on the board.

Montana followed that up with the program’s only win over the Huskies, an 18-14 victory in Seattle that was one of the last games in UW history not played inside Husky Stadium, held just weeks before the stadium opened.

In the 18-game series history against the Huskies, only one game was played in Missoula. Montana hosted Washington at UM on Homecoming weekend in 1927, with the Huskies going away 32-0 2017 BIG SKY FOOTBALL STANDINGS winners. The game was not without its bright spots for UM, however. According to the game recap in UM’s 1928 Sentinel Yearbook: “The brilliant form of the Grizzlies in the first quarter buoyed up the As of Sept. 4, 2017 spirits of the Montana supporters, and the bulky Washington line seemed unable to stop the tri-colored offense.”

SCHOOL BIG SKY OVER. “For the greater part of the first half, the ball was in in Husky territory. With but five minutes left the Idaho State 0-0 1-0 Huskies took to the air, and two long heaves from the accurate hand of Tesreau and Washington Montana 0-0 1-0 registered its first touchdown,” the recap goes on to read. Northern Colorado 0-0 1-0 Weber State 0-0 1-0 “The Huskies led by 12 points at halftime and, though the Grizzlies gave a hard battle, they were unable to score or check the visitors and the game closed, Washington five touchdowns in the lead,” Eastern Washington 0-0 0-1 it concludes. Montana State 0-0 0-1 North Dakota 0-0 0-1 The last game of the series in 1951 (a 58-7 Griz loss) remains one of the most notable wins for the Northern Arizona 0-0 0-1 Huskies in UW school history at No. 10 on their list of largest margins of victory in the modern era. Sacramento State 0-0 0-1 Washington scored nine touchdowns in that game, tied for most in school history, seven of which Southern Utah 0-0 0-1 came on the ground – tied for the second-most rushing TDs. UM only managed three first downs, and UC Davis 0-0 0-1 completed only one pass for zero yards.
