City Research Online: http://openaccess.city.ac.uk/ [email protected] The rise of the ‘yummy mummy’: popular conservatism and the neoliberal maternal in contemporary British culture Jo Littler Abstract This article analyses the emergence of the new social type of the ‘yummy mummy’ by examining the constellation of narratives circulating through and around it in British culture. It contends that, whilst it has some notable precursors, the idea of the yummy mummy marks a fairly substantial cultural shift given the weight of the western Christian tradition that has overwhelmingly positioned the mother as asexual. Coming into being in part through an increasing social divide between rich and poor, this stock type most often serves to augment a white, thirtysomething position of privilege, shoring up its boundaries against the other side of the social divide (so-called ‘pramfaces’).

The House is on Fire: Housing and the 2015 General Election 1 The House is on Fire: Housing and the 2015 General Election Un sujet brûlant ? Le logement et les élections de 2015 David Fée 1 Housing was a key electoral issue during the post-war years because of an enduring shortage. It remained so throughout the Thatcher years because of the Conservative governments’ emphasis on home-ownership as well as the proven connection between home-ownership and voting behaviour.1 It then experienced a decline in visibility in the 1990s and 2000s due to politicians’ conviction that the housing shortage was over and the emergence of a housing consensus2 between the two main parties that deprived home- ownership of its electoral importance.

  • THE ANDREW MARR SHOW INTERVIEW: ED BALLS, MP SHADOW CHANCELLOR NOVEMBER 30Th 2014
PLEASE NOTE “THE ANDREW MARR SHOW” MUST BE CREDITED IF ANY PART OF THIS TRANSCRIPT IS USED THE ANDREW MARR SHOW INTERVIEW: ED BALLS, MP SHADOW CHANCELLOR NOVEMBER 30th 2014 ANDREW MARR: Four years ago George Osborne thought he’d have got rid of the deficit by now, but he’s still borrowing about £100 billion, which is a headache for him and for anyone hoping to succeed him after the election in six months’ time. So how would Labour balance the books? The Shadow Chancellor, Ed Balls, is with me now. Good morning to you. ED BALLS: Good morning, Andrew. ANDREW MARR: Let’s start by asking about this £2 billion for the NHS. Rather shoots your fox, doesn’t it? ED BALLS: Well, look, the Conservatives wasted £3 billion on their reorganisation of the NHS, so this is a typical Tory pattern: a winter crisis and then crisis money coming after it. The question is: is this a one-off or is there going to be an actual long-term investment in the nurses and doctors we need? Labour has said we’ll have a tax on high value 1 properties, 2.5 million pounds over and above Tory spending plans for 20,000 more nurses, doctors, care workers too. We’ll save the NHS. I think you can see the Tories are really putting the NHS in danger. ANDREW MARR: Well, as I recall, your leader Ed Miliband said during his party conference speech that Labour was going to find an extra £2 billion for the NHS without giving a timescale.
