ABRIR CAPÍTULO V TOMO 1 CAPÍTULO ‘VI ANÁLISIS PORMENORIZADO DE LA BIOGRAFÍA DE UN ARTISTA Escrita por Max Aub en México y publicada en 1958, no puede entenderse esta obra aislada del resto de su producción, desde a joven Luis Alvarez Petreña (19321) hasta el último Correo de Euclides de 1971 o el libro Buñuel, novela que preparaba y no llegó a terminar. Estas relaciones, tratadas en otros capítulos de nuestro trabajo con mayor amplitud, emergen aquí ineludiblemente, al igual que las huellas de su autor, Max Aub y el mundo que le tocó vivir. En la novela estudiada Max Aub se propone escribir la biografía de un artista, a la manera de una monografía de arte, siguiendo una estructura de siete partes (como en Campo del moro), que describen el ambiente, vida y obra del personaje. Jusep Torres Campalans nace en España, en Mollerusa, en 1886, catalanista, ca- tólico, anarquista, en suma hijo de la época, se emparenta con la generación de 1898, la misma de Picasso. 1. Publicada primero por entregas en Azor, núm. ~ a 17, Barcelona, octubre 1932 a febrero 1934. 456 Recordemos brevemente su historia: Campalans, que conoce a Picasso en Barcelona siendo apenas un joven adolescen- te, acaba en París, como aquél, participando en las mismas aventuras pictóricas *0 que se desarrollan en esos años en la meca por excelencia del arte moderno. Como artista pasa sucesivamente por distintas etapas, primero impresionista, después fauvista, cubista, e incluso abstracto, acabando su ciclo vital artístico con una crisis que coincide con la pérdida de ilusiones que representa la guerra de 1914, fecha dada como muerte del cubismo por algunos autores, por ejemplo por Romero Brest, básico en la documentación de Max Aub. -

(Re)Discovering Max Aub In his induction speech into the Real Academia Española, Antonio Muñoz Molina stated that literature is the possibility of a wonderful dialogue not only between generations, but also between the living and the dead. Post- Franco culture has been haunted by the reappearance of the dead, or ghosts, who represent not only the repressed memories of the past shut out by the official discourse of the State, but also serve as an incarnation of the past in the present. Their presence is a warning to society that in order to move forward, one must first confront the unresolved issues of the past, for to deny the existence of these ghosts is to deny History. “Literature time,” as Muñoz Memory and Its Discontents: Spanish Culture in the Early Twenty-First Century Hispanic Issues On Line 11 (2012) DICKEY♦ 158 Molina calls it, embodies a symbolic space that goes beyond the individual, transitory experiences of life, and through memory keeps the past alive. -

Pablo Picasso Guernica (1937) Pablo Picasso painted Guernica at the request of the Republican government for the Spanish Pavilion at the 1937 Paris International Exhibition. The work is a testimony and condemnation of the bombing of the Basque town of Guernica’s population by the Luftwaffe, who were allied to the rebels, and is considered a fundamental work of 20th Century art, remaining a universal symbol of the fight against oppression. April 26, 1937. On that day, planes of the Condor Legion of the German air force, in aid of the rebel troops beneath the com- mand of General Franco, launched incen- diary bombs against Guernica, a key city in the Basque political tradition. Some foreign press correspondents covering the happenings on the northern front of the war were in Bilbao. The very day of the bombing, they moved to Guernica, gathe- ring the images and testimonies which would reach the international press the following day and affect the entire world. Navigating Ambiguity: Narratives of Spanish Exile in Mexico by Simón Otaola and Max Aub Kyle E. Lawton Saint Catherine University Minneapolis Community and Technical College Abstract: The exile of Republicans after the Civil War of 1936-1939 represented the largest migration of Spaniards since the Conquest. Contemporaneous with other mass refugee movements, these émigrés initially posited Spanish national identity as an ideal that was not only transplantable abroad through their literary and cultural productions but also their exclusive purview. In contrast, Spain was seen as a cultural wasteland and therefore no longer truly “Spanish.” However, quickly this ideal of national identity as definable through exile works faced significant obstacles. My paper examines how the de facto acceptance of the Franco regime and the exiles’ isolation from both Spanish and Mexican audiences challenged these discourses of defending an authentic version of Spanish national identity from abroad. I explore these ideas through close readings of La librería de Arana by Simón Otaola and several short stories by Max Aub in La verdadera historia de la muerte de Francisco Franco and Cuentos mexicanos (con pilón). the cinematic flâneur manifestations of modernity in the male protagonist of 1940s film noir Petra Désirée Nolan Submitted in Total Fulfilment of the Requirements of the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy April 2004 The School of Art History, Cinema, Classics and Archaeology The University of Melbourne Abstract The hardboiled hero is recognised as a central trope in the film noir cycle, and particularly in the ‘classic’ noir texts produced in Hollywood in the 1940s. Like the films themselves, this protagonist has largely been understood as an allegorical embodiment of a bleak post-World War Two mood of anxiety and disillusionment. Theorists have consistently attributed his pessimism, alienation, paranoia and fatalism to the concurrent American cultural climate. With its themes of murder, illicit desire, betrayal, obsession and moral dissolution, the noir canon also proves conducive to psychoanalytic interpretation. By oedipalising the noir hero and the cinematic text in which he is embedded, this approach at best has produced exemplary noir criticism, but at worst a tendency to universalise his trajectory. This thesis proposes a complementary and newly historicised critical paradigm with which to interpret the noir hero. Such an exegesis encompasses a number of social, aesthetic, demographic and political forces reaching back to the nineteenth century. This will reveal the centrality of modernity in shaping the noir hero’s ontology. The noir hero will also be connected to the flâneur, a figure who embodied the changes of modernity and who emerged in the mid-nineteenth century as both an historical entity and a critical metaphor for the new subject. As a rehistoricised approach will reveal, this nineteenth century—or classic—flâneur provides a potent template for the noir hero. -
