Accreditation: Jackson Christian completed its five-year accreditation review through the National Christian School Association and AdvancED (formally SACS). The external review is an integral component of AdvancED Performance Accreditation and provides the institution with a comprehensive evaluation. The evaluation is guided by the results of diagnostic instruments, in-depth review of data and documentation, and the professional judgment of a team of qualified and highly trained evaluators. A series of diagnostic instruments examines the impact of teaching and learning on student performance, the capacity of leadership to effect continuous improvement, and the degree to which the institution optimizes its use of available resources to facilitate and support student success. The results of this evaluation are represented in the Index of Education Quality (IEQ™). The AdvancED national average for the IEQ is 282.79. Jackson Christian scored a 317.95 on the IEQ. 6 GRADUATION 2017

“We have our memories to hold onto and lessons we’ve learned from our mistakes, and now it’s time for us to take the next step into our futures.” - Maria McConkey, Valedictorian

“The end is in sight. It’s time to make a choice. You can either close your eyes and miss the end or you can throw your hands in the air and soak up every last second.” - Reagan Bain, Salutatorian

LEADER 2017 As the 40th year of Jackson Christian comes to a close, students from preschool to high school seniors close one chapter to begin the next. Twenty-eight preschool students sang and recited scripture at the Campbell Street End-of-the-Year program. Thirty-six Kindergarten graduates were “Out of This World” at their graduation program. After learning about space and the world, they shared about mission trip opportunities and sang songs in different languages as well as the classic favorite “We Are the World.” We look forward to being a part of these young students’ lives for many years to come.

Seventy-nine high school seniors crossed the stage to make up the 37th graduating class at Jackson Christian. We pray Numbers 6:24-26 on all our graduates: “The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make his face to shine upon you and be gracious to you, the Lord lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace.”

“All your children shall be taught by the Lord, and great shall be the peace of your children.” - Isaiah 54:13

Giving Tuesday Boosts Student Scholarship Funds Parents, grandparents, former parents, alumni and students all joined together on Tuesday, November 29, 2016 to raise more than $55,000 for student scholarships as a part of #GivingTuesday.

LEADER 2017 Completing the Family

By Jeanna Rice, Director of ELV

Jackson Christian fulfilled its commitment to complete Christian education from birth through high school with the addition of infant and toddler classes. Like a new baby, the infant program has been a wonderful blessing to the Jackson Christian family. The Early Learning Village can truly live up to its name now, capitalizing on each teachable moment from birth to pre-K. Early literacy skill development is encouraged through reading, conversations and interactive play. Studies show that literacy development starts early in life (infant – 3 years) and is highly correlated to school achievement. Babies are rocked, cuddled and engaged in Beyond childcare, the program includes learning from the first moment they enter their daily Bible lessons, occasional chapel visits, classroom. one-on-one time, pre literacy skills and outside adventures. Thank you! 22 Jackson Christian Launches New Website

Our updated website, jcseagles.org, went live in March. The redesign allows us to better communicate with our Jackson Christian family, as well as those who do not know us yet.

The main goals of this redesign were: 1) to better communicate who our Jackson Christian family is, especially as people form first impressions 2) to have a site that is responsive. The site is mobile friendly — it will work properly whether you’re on a laptop, phone or tablet.

The site has several ways to access information. •The right side navigation will take you to a mosaic of the major sections. • The footer bar will take you to a site map of the entire site. You can go anywhere in the site from here. • If you scroll up while on the homepage, you can also see all the mosaics of each section. • The 40th anniversary logo in the top left will always take you to the home page.

We hope you’ll explore the site to see what is new. Thank you to Tamie Sorrell and to the team she led to create it: Bramblett Group, Michael Plyler, Donna Newberry and students, Maria McConkey and Kelly Brown. This site represents months of work from concept and design to coding and writing content. Our hope is that it will be an effective tool as we lead students to love God.

28 NICARAGUA: LIVES CHANGED By Judy Bentley and Stephanie Brown

“Nicaragua is special to me because I get to worship and build relationships with people from a different culture.” - Mattie Jones

“It’s something I wish everyone could experience. God shows up in so many different ways and it’s completely life changing.” - Shelby McKeel

A group of 14 students and five teachers spent their spring break serving in Leon, Nicaragua. Various projects such as painting library shelves and murals, taking school pictures of the students and playing with local children filled the week. Getting to know the students at Nicaragua Christian School is always the highlight of the trip. Even though thousands of miles separate our homes, our students and the students at Nicaragua Christian struggle with many of the same issues. We all share a common goal of striving towards Christ. One of the most rewarding parts of the trip was helping with a youth campaign at the church that resulted in nine baptisms. It was very encouraging to be a part of the great work that “My two trips to Nicaragua goes on in that church and school and to be part of such a life-changing experience. “This mission trip is life changing for our are special to me because students, and my greatest desire is that every We were also blessed to see the spiritual single student at Jackson Christian could they not only strengthened my growth that occurs on this trip in the lives have the opportunity to have an experience of our own students. LEADER 2017 TRANSFORMATIONAL LOVE: ZIMBABWE

For the second year in a row, Jackson Christian took seniors to Zimbabwe. The twelve-member team was privileged to be part of nine baptisms, help feed more than 400 orphans and witness the power of the gospel lived out through brothers and sisters in Zimbabwe. In the words of our students, here is a glimpse of the transformative power of the trip:

“In two words, the trip was ‘transformational love,’” Tucker Latham said.

“Zimbabwe was a trip that truly opens your eyes, teaches you to lead, and to not be afraid to stand out and do what is right,” Caleb Payne, said. “The hearts of the people are truly pure gold. They have little, yet give so much. I intended to go and bless so many lives, but I received an even greater outpouring of God’s pure love through the smiles and hearts of the people of Zimbabwe.”

“The trip to Africa was so life changing!” Kelly Brown said. “It was such a blessing to be a part of it. I loved every moment of it!”

“This trip was such a blessing for me,” Katy Mullins said. “I will never forget the people or places I encountered on my trip to Zimbabwe. I was able to get out of my comfort zone and experience God in ways that I didn’t even know were possible. I experienced new cultures, tried new foods, met new people, and marveled at the handiwork of God in the scenery and wildlife. This trip will forever hold a special place in my heart. Bwana Asifiwe!”

“This mission trip was life changing to say the least,” Kaci Lynch said. “While in Zimbabwe, I witnessed God like I never imagined possible. I also found myself. I realized that God really is in control and you can chose to either follow His plan or try to construct your own, which will always fail in the end. Being able to witness God in a new way every single day was by far, the most amazing part. Whether it be through the village people, music, wildlife or a friend sitting by the fire at night, I was in God’s presence at all times. I will forever cherish this trip and the people I shared it with.”

LEADER 2017 Captain Tyler McAnally ‘04

Captain Tyler McAnally is on assignment as a foreign area officer stationed in Slovenia. He is pictured with Sen. John McCain at the “Day of Slovenian and U.S. Friendship,” a celebration held every year in the small Slovenian town of Andraž nad Polzelo. In 1944, a U.S. B-17 bomber named “Dark Eyes” was shot down over the town while on a bombing mission to strike targets in Austria. Eight U.S. Airmen were killed in the crash, while the remaining two Airmen were captured by German forces and held as POWs for the remainder of the war. Every year the town holds a ceremony to honor the sacrifice of the lost Airmen and to celebrate Slovenian and U.S friendship. The Slovenian President and U.S. Ambassador to Slovenia are regular attendees of this event, and this year Sen. John McCain was in attendance. Adding to this year’s significance, April 7, 2017 marked the 25th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Slovenia and the U.S. (Captain McAnally is second from the left.)
