i Quaternary Glaciation in the Pindus Mountains, Northwest Greece Philip D. Hughes Darwin College, University of Cambridge March 2004 This dissertation is submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy ii This dissertation is the result of my own work and includes nothing which is the outcome of work done in collaboration except where specifically indicated in the text. This thesis is no more than 80,000 words in length. iii Abstract Geomorphological and geological evidence for former Quaternary glaciation has been mapped in the Pindus Mountains of northwest Greece. The dynamics and chronology of glaciation in this area has been established through sedimentological analysis, soil analysis and Uranium-series dating. Four glacial events are recorded in the sedimentological and geomorphological records. The most extensive recorded glaciation pre-dates 350,000 years BP and was characterised by extensive valley glaciers and ice-fields. A second glaciation occurred prior to the last interglacial, before ca. 127,000 years BP, and was characterised by glaciers that reached mid-valley positions. The height of the last glacial stage in Greece (30-20,000 14C years BP) is recorded by small cirque glacier moraines and relict periglacial rock glaciers. Evidence for a fourth glacial phase is recorded only in the highest cirques of Mount Smolikas (2637 m a.s.l.), the highest peak in the Pindus Mountains. This phase of glaciation is likely to have occurred during the Late-glacial Substage (14-10,000 14C years BP). All of the glaciers during the different glacial stages were reconstructed and used alongside periglacial rock glaciers to determine palaeoclimate. During the glacial maximum of the last glacial stage, mean annual temperatures were ca. 8-9˚C lower than at present and mean annual precipitation greater than 2000 mm - similar to modern values. Earlier glacial maxima are likely to have been colder but with mean annual precipitation still greater than 2000 mm. Maximum glacier extent in the Pindus Mountains is likely to have preceded the most severe arid phase of glacial cycles indicated in the pollen record and also global glacial maxima. This was because of the small size of the former Pindus glaciers and their rapid response to climate change, as well as the increased prevalence of aridity around the global glacial maxima. The glacial sequence in the Pindus Mountains represents the best- dated and longest recognised record of glaciation in the Mediterranean region and provides a stratigraphical framework for Quaternary cold-stage climates in Greece. iv Acknowledgements I would like to thank Phil Gibbard and Jamie Woodward for supporting this project and providing invaluable comments on the manuscript.     PAUL KNOTT Moroccan Climbing: Rock, Sun and Snow OroCCO fascinates me. It has a rich complexity, retaining an alluring M mystique despite being well travelled and documented. During 1998 and 1999 I was lucky enough to get a real insight into the country and its climbing through a post at the delightful Al Akhawayn University in the Middle Atlas Mountains. Here I give a flavour of the rock climbing, skiing and mountain walking, all of them spiced with the cultural interest inherent in Morocco's mountain country. After three days' driving from the UK, I sped through dry limestone plateaux to Ifrane with its promise of sunshine and snow. I found myself sharing an office with Michael Peyron - Alpine Club member, Atlas guidebook author and Berber expert. Along with other companions, we escaped at weekends to explore the wealth of lesser-known mountains a short drive from the fairy-tale campus. We sought and found crags and mountains with European-style ease of access. For big, unexplored rock climbs one of my favourite places was the Dades Gorge. This was visited by Trevor Jones and Les Brown in 1990, but otherwise seems to have seen little or no climbing. Above Boumalne-de­ Dades the valley becomes strikingly beautiful, with its kasbahs and its unusual rock features (doigts de singes or monkey fingers) set amongst emerald green jardins. On my first visit we got no further than this; the downpour sent raging torrents across the road and stranded us at Ait-Arbi. We found the doigts disappointing for climbing. I returned some weeks later, to the gorge itself.

XLV, 2011: 47–68 PL ISSN 0081-6434 EMIL GACHEV (BLAGOEVGRAD) INTER-ANNUAL SIZE VARIATIONS OF SNEZHNIKA GLACIERET (THE PIRIN MOUNTAINS, BULGARIA) IN THE LAST TEN YEARS Abstract: Glacierets, which are in fact embryonic forms of recent glaciation, can serve as important indicators of contemporary climate dynamics in areas where classical glaciers do not exist, such as the high mountains in Southeastern Europe. Two glacierets are located in Bulgaria’s Pirin Mountains: Snezhnika and Banski Suhodol. Snezhnika has been relatively well studied for the last 50 years, and in particular since 1994, when annual size measurements on a regular basis started. The present study focuses on the recent variations in the size of Snezhnika i.e. in the last ten years. Data about the area of the glacieret at the end of the ablation season (in autumn), which was obtained for each year by field measurements and analytical calculations, show that temperature can be considered as a major factor that drives glacieret fluctuations. At the current stage precipitation factor can not be evaluated properly due to the deficit of accurate climate information.     JPR Men of the Gun and Men of the State: Military Entrepreneurship in the Shadow of the Greek Civil War (1946–1949) Spyros Tsoutsoumpis Abstract: The article explores the intersection between paramilitarism, organized crime, and nation-building during the Greek Civil War. Nation-building has been described in terms of a centralized state extending its writ through a process of modernisation of institutions and monopolisation of violence. Accordingly, the presence and contribution of private actors has been a sign of and a contributive factor to state-weakness. This article demonstrates a more nuanced image wherein nation-building was characterised by pervasive accommodations between, and interlacing of, state and non-state violence. This approach problematises divisions between legal (state-sanctioned) and illegal (private) violence in the making of the modern nation state and sheds new light into the complex way in which the ‘men of the gun’ interacted with the ‘men of the state’ in this process, and how these alliances impacted the nation-building process at the local and national levels. Keywords: Greece, Civil War, Paramilitaries, Organized Crime, Nation-Building Introduction n March 1945, Theodoros Sarantis, the head of the army’s intelligence bureau (A2) in north-western Greece had a clandestine meeting with Zois Padazis, a brigand-chief who operated in this area. Sarantis asked Padazis’s help in ‘cleansing’ the border area from I‘unwanted’ elements: leftists, trade-unionists, and local Muslims. In exchange he promised to provide him with political cover for his illegal activities.1 This relationship that extended well into the 1950s was often contentious.
