Greetings from Asian Elephant Support! Greetings from Asian Elephant Support! How Can You Help Asian Elephants?? By participating in the 3rd annual California Pizza Kitchen fundraiser in April 2013! It’s easy to help Asian Elephant Support continue our elephant conservation work. How: By eating good food with friends and family. Just print out a flyer for your location and present it to your server during on one of the event dates. CPK will donate 20% of your bill to AES! It’s that easy! Don’t have time to dine in? This donation offer is good for dine-in, curbside, take-out, delivery orders (that are placed directly with CPK), and catering. It even includes all beverages! See the list of participating locations below and check our website periodically for updates. The number of locations continues to grow! Don’t see your city? It’s not too late to take action to help elephants by being a local representative! We do all the paperwork so all you have to do is encourage your friends and family to print out a flyer and enjoy good food! Email us at [email protected] for more information. An important part of Asian Elephant Support’s (AES) mission is to support veterinary care for elephants in Asian range countries. Through interactions with elephant veterinarians from around Asia during the AES facilitated Regional Asian Elephant Veterinary Workshop held in Banda Aceh, Sumatra-Indonesia in March 2012, AES has made many connections and continues to support the development of veterinary expertise with elephants in Asia. In December 2012, this networking helped AES facilitate a visit to Myanmar (formerly known as Burma) by several elephant veterinarians and managers. The group’s visit was hosted by the Myanmar Timber Enterprise (MTE), a government agency that oversees the care and management of approximately 3000 elephants in Myanmar. This country has a large number of captive elephants that are still used for logging work in the forests. Ultrasound assessment to detect pregnancy During the trip, several MTE forest camps around the country were visited, including logging, training, and rest camps. The overall care and management of these working elephants is closely monitored, and MTE has a large staff of well-qualified veterinarians who were most welcoming, sharing experiences and expertise with the visiting veterinarians. A particular interest for the MTE veterinarians was learning more about the use of ultrasound technology in elephants. One of the AES-supported veterinarians brought a field ultrasound unit, enabling practical demonstrations of its use in a variety of medical issues such as detecting pregnancy, evaluating medical conditions such as abscesses or tumors, and assessing some internal organs. The group had numerous fruitful discussions with MTE staff to determine how best to help support ongoing care and management of the elephants in this country. In addition to facilitating the sharing of professional experiences, AES was pleased to make a contribution enabling the purchase of needed medicines and supplies for the timber elephants of Myanmar, and looks forward to being of further assistance to this important population of Asian elephants. Asian Elephant Support is delighted to be collaborating with the Elephant Managers Association (EMA) on an important fundraiser. We need your help to raise enough money to purchase 100 traditional knives (khukri) for the mahouts in Assam, India. The mahouts need these knives for daily activities such as trimming their elephants’ feet and cutting fodder to feed the elephants. You can visit Sponsorship for Supplies for more details on this program. Even a $10, $15 or $20 donation would make a huge difference in the lives of the elephants and mahouts. Just go to the AES website to make a secure donation. Please make a note that your donation is for the “Sponsorship for Supplies” program. This program will end May 1, 2013, so donate today! THANK YOU We at AES wish to extend a very sincere thank you to each donor who has voted their support with a financial gift. We value that confidence and will always do our best for the animals we all care for so deeply. Please visit our website (www.asianelephantsupport.org) and follow us on Facebook (Asian Elephant Support). If you have questions, please contact us. We appreciate your support. Please consider a donation to help Asian elephants and those who care for them.
