Elkson Glenelg 1979/80 John Galloway Woodville (*) = Denotes Deceased The 2017-2020 Strategic Plan has been prepared in consultation with members, stakeholders, staff, and the Board of Directors. The complete plan is available to view on the Baseball SA website. STRATEGIC PLAN STRATEGIC 7 8 STRATEGIC PLAN It goes without saying that our baseball community has endured some unprecedent times, with the bushfires over Christmas which devastated some of our members livelihoods and property, through to the current pandemic which has shaped the way we live and influenced our personal and professional worlds. The 19/20 season was one of challenges and rewards for all that played our game, we saw an increase in overall memberships, in part to better recording through an improved registration platform. We welcomed new families at the grassroots entry level and saw some returning to the sport at a social level. We were saddened to say goodbye to some that have shaped our game and influenced where we are today, and our heartfelt condolences go out to those baseball families. Our game seeks to improve through the continuance of rule and governance refinements, which will better position the sport in general. The Board has once again been focused and supportive of guiding the sport in a direction which will foster and grow. The Board have invested in identifying and building a team off field which will deliver, engage, and provide a range of services to our members. Since joining the Board in July 2010 as Affiliation Director and then taking up the President’s position in May 2013, I have seen a number of positive changes in our game, from both local and national levels. I have been fortunate enough to be able to have had the time to contribute to the volunteer’s role and even more fortunate to work alongside some talented and dedicated people, who have demonstrated their love and commitment to the game. Board members, like the late Jim Wilton, Bob Neiswander, Peter Fisher, Ian Campbell, Ron Harvey (OAM), Kevin Shepherdson, Ben Dixon, Jenni Franke, Annie Fidge, Jenny Dunn, Tony Catt, Kyle Smith Karen Phillips, Terry Evans, Andrew Nairn, Lawrie Moore and Mark Brougham. Also, Presidents, Kevin Jennings and Shayne Bennett. Of course, it’s the staff that do all the heavy lifting of the day to day grind and once again there have been some passionate people, that I have worked with like Paul Begg, Paul Chandler, Trish Hollands, Lorraine Dunn, Derek Slater, Ben Arthur, Andrew Bell, Nyrell Davison, Jessica Sneath, Chrystina Williams, Renae Roach, Laura Bond, Bianca Smith, Drew Samuelson, Neil Poulton, Stuart Millar, Warwick Marks, Matt Williams, Landon Hernandez, Blake Halligan, Ian Reval, Andrew Scott, Chris Adamson, Tyrone Hambly, Lynton Arscott, Eric Balnar, Rowena Trevaskis, Giang Danh, Nathan Davison and Sarah Kelly. Through this period, there was one constant and that was to develop a home, an identity as such, this was realised when the then Minister Bignell issued a $500,000 grant to Softball SA for the initial stages of workings and feasibility into the West Beach development. On the back of this Diamond Sports SA Inc was formed between Softball SA and Baseball SA. On 14th February 2014, I signed the SA Government deed with the Softball SA Chair to receive a further $3.5M to develop the West Beach site and subsequently with a lot of hard work, Baseball finally had a home. Friday 2nd October 2015 history was made, as the first game was played at the new home under lights between Woodville and Kensington.

  • The History of School Baseball in Australia
The History of School Baseball in Australia Baseball has been played in schools since the early 1900s. In New South Wales the longest running School Knockout happens to be in the sport of Baseball, the Proud Shield competition as it is known, began in 1908, and was won by Fort Street High. The sport is presently played in over 500 Secondary Schools around Australia. At the interstate level, competitions have existed since the 1940's, with some evidence suggesting competitions in the 1930's. These competitions involved New South Wales and Queensland teams with spasmodic representation from South Australia and Victoria. Throughout the 1970's and early 1980's only New South Wales and Queensland teams competed, until 1987 when Australian Capital Territory played in a three way Championship. Michael Chapman, the New South Wales Combined High Schools Baseball Convener, worked tirelessly throughout this time to have other States participate and for Baseball to come under the umbrella of the Australian Schools Sports Council. In 1988, Michael was elected the first National Secretary of the Australian Secondary School Baseball Association under the banner of the Australian Schools Sports Council. The Championship of 1988, held in Canberra, had four teams - New South Wales, Queensland, Western Australia and the Australian Capital Territory. It was a trial Championship before the full acceptance into the Australian Schools Sports Council. The venue for the inaugural Australian Secondary Schools Baseball Championship was Oriole Stadium, Sydney in 1989 where Victoria also competed for the first time. This year sees us playing our 21 st Championship. With the greater interest in the community, baseball standards have improved in schools.
