Arrow ofGod was first published by Heinemann in 1964 and then in their African Writers Series in 1965. In 1974 a revised edition appeared in which the author acknowledged he had removed 'certain structural weaknesses'. Three of the most striking changes are: (a) Obiageli's song in the first edition (pp. 79-80) is reduced to five lines in the revised edition (p. 65). (b) the 18-line continuation of the song in the first edition (p. 80) is omitted in the revised edition. (c) the story of the two boys in the world of the spirits (pp. 235-9) is reduced to a six-line introduction in the revised edition (pp. 190-1). But there is an even deeper possibility in which the harvest in the name of the son becomes a reversal of the natural order. In the society we have been looking at in this story, you do not do things in the name of the son but in the name of the father. Yet in his final work, Achebe made a clear statement about the positive legacies of colonialism, praising the British project of state formation and nation building in the lower Niger basin. A careful study of his writings and comments from 1958 until his death in 2013 shows that Achebe was never the simple anti-colonial figure that most assumed, and that his seeming reversal could be read as the culmination of a lifetime’s meditation on African history and politics. Achebe’s final views have significant paradigmatic implications for the knowledge relevant to national identity formation and state building in Africa today. THE BEST-KNOWN OF AFRICAN WRITERS, Chinua Achebe, published in 2012, a year before his death at 82, a mournful recollection of the Biafran war that tore his native Nigeria apart between 1967 and 1970.1 Given Achebe’s stature and his recent death, There was a country attracted more than the usual number of reviews, most of them paying homage to the man and his legacy. ABIOLA IRELE If there is any single work that can be considered central to the evolving canon of modern African literature, it is, without question, Chinua Achebe's Things Fall Apart. The novel owes this distinction to the innovative significance it assumed as soon as it was published, a significance that was manifested in at least two respects. In the first place, the novel provided an image of an African society, reconstituted as a living entity and in its historic circumstance: an image of a coherent social structure forming the institutional fabric of a universe of meanings and values. Because this image of Africa was quite unprecedented in literature, it also carried considerable ideological weight in the specific context of the novel's writing and reception. For it cannot be doubted that the comprehensive scope of Achebe's depiction of a particularized African community engaged in its own social processes, carried out entirely on its own terms, with all the internal tensions this entailed, challenged the simplified representation that the West offered itself of Africa as a formless area of life, as "an area of darkness" devoid of human significance.1 Thus, beyond what might be considered its ethnographic interest, which gave the work an immediate and ambiguous appeal--a point to which we shall return--Achebe's novel articulated a new vision of the African world and gave expression to a new sense of the African experience that was more penetrating than what had been available before its appearance.

Born just four years apart, these two Nigerian writers have led lives that are simultaneously similar and distinct. Their differences are obvious for example they have disparate origins within Nigeria— Achebe is Igbo1 and Soyinka Yoruba—but important common experiences invite comparisons between their lives and careers. To begin with, they share an index of national historical phenomena, from the history of colonization and independence, which came to Nigeria in 1960, to the continued political struggles against dictatorships and through civil war leading finally to their exile.

Being African is often claimed and denied with expediency. While all claims and denials may be founded, not every claim is informed by the same considerations. If being and becoming African were compared to shopping at a supermarket, one could argue that some are flexible in what they put into their shopping baskets while others are picky, even when invited to take a lot by attractive offers, sales and discounts. And some have products thrust down their consumer palates through the power of aggressive advertisement or for lack of purchasing power. I am particularly interested in how being African is claimed and denied in history, socio- anthropologically, and politically. In this connection, I have found much inspiration in Chinua Achebe’s use of proverbs as words of salience and significance in crafting the stories and essays that have made him a household name on the continent and globally. Achebe has found in proverbs a powerful resource of complicated repertoires from which he has drawn repeatedly to nourish his characters and oil their experiences and relationships, depicting their multifacetedness and celebrating their humanity.

    “THE UNIVERSITY OF THE VILLAGE”: THE UNIVERSITY OF NIGERIA, NSUKKA AND THE MAKING OF POST-INDEPENDENCE NIGERIA By Russell Wade Stevenson A DISSERTATION Submitted to Michigan State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of History—Doctor of Philosophy 2020 ABSTRACT “THE UNIVERSITY OF THE VILLAGE”: THE UNIVERSITY OF NIGERIA, NSUKKA AND THE MAKING OF POST-INDEPENDENCE NIGERIA By Russell Wade Stevenson This dissertation examines the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN, the first indigenous university in Nigeria and the first land grant university in Africa. This dissertation argues that UNN represented an innovative experiment in African higher education by expanding higher education to the general populace rather than the colonially privileged elite. However, its construction drew upon patronage politics and taxation regimes that expropriated funding at the same time other regions faced education taxes. Resistance to the University’s construction reflected local sentiments of inequitable distribution of tax resources throughout Nigeria’s Eastern Region. The University also served as a mechanism in post-independence Nigerian geopolitics: as a mechanism for removing the influence of the British-established University College, Ibadan and British educational models more generally. The University of Nigeria, Nsukka would be, as Taiye Selasi and Achille Mbembe have phrased it, an “Afro-politan” institution—porous and all-encompassing of knowledge systems throughout the globe. During the Nigeria-Biafra war, UNN faced sustained wartime damage—damage from it could not easily recover. The Nigeria-Biafra war laid the groundwork for a period of sustained infrastructural decay and internal resistance, even as the Nigerian federal government enjoyed larger access to oil revenue.
