A Social Dimensions Analysis of Letters to Juliet Movie Script. A Thesis. English Education Department, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education Science, Muhammadiyah University of Purworejo. Consultant: Zulia Chasanah, S.S,M.Pd. Movie is not only something that entertains us but also provides information that we need to know. In this thesis, the researcher uses Letter to Juliet movie script as representative of western movie. The characters in this movie come from different countries so that they represent different cultures. Therefore, it will be interesting to identify the social dimensions. The object of this study is the dialogue of the characters on the movie script „Letter to Juliet‟. Source of the data used in this study is a document in the form of movie script. The researcher uses a qualitative type of research to conduct this study. The key instrument of this study is the researcher herself. The researcher uses descriptive qualitative research to explain each dialogue. The result of this study shows that the social dimensions which are represented in the dialogue are high solidarity, low solidarity, low status, high status, high formality, low formality, referential function and affective function. Dialogue that reflects high solidarity scale is “Yeah. I know. I just. I was thinking I could try something new.” Dialogue that reflects low solidarity scale is “These are the secretaries of Juliet. We respond to the letters she receives from around the world.” Dialogue that reflects low status scale is “Ladies, this is Sophia.” Dialogue that reflects high status scale is “An apology, dear, is when you look at someone straight in the eye with contrition and sincerity and actually say the words “I‟m sorry”.” Dialogue that reflects high formality scale is “I remember when he used to have that affect on me.” Dialogue that reflects low formality scale is “But? Who's gonna take the pictures?” Dialogue that reflects referential function scale is “Alright, I think we get the picture. “Dialogue that reflects same status scale is “You're such a prude. And you're ageist.” The students are suggested to learn the social value and social skill from movies they watch. Keywords: Analysis, Social Dimension, Letters to Juliet, Movie Script xiii CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION First chapter consists of background of the study, identification of the problem, statement of the problem, objective of the study, significance of the study, limitation of the study, and definition of key term. A. Background of the Study As an international language, English is important to study. It helps us to communicate with other people all over the world. English unites people who are coming from different country, religion, social background, and of course different language. We need it to socialize with the global community. Through English, we can easily communicate to foreigners so that we can enlarge our relation. Related to communication in the society, there is a study about it. It is called linguistics. One of the branches of linguistics studies is sociolinguistics which is studying the relationship between language and the society. It is focused to explain why people speak differently to other people in different social contexts. The advantages of sociolinguist study are to provide information about the way language works, as well as about the social relationship in a community, and the way people signal aspects of their social identity through 1 2 their language. In Sociolinguistics, we are discussing the different social community which is influencing the language structure. The structure of society is influenced by a lot of factors, such as „who is speaking‟, „with whom he or she is speaking‟, „where are the conversation taking place‟, „what is the theme of conversation‟ and „what is the aim of the conversation‟. The factors above can be defined as four components; they are participants, setting, topic and function. Those four components are related to social dimensions, which can develop social skills of people that will support them throughout their lives. These dimensions are about social distance scale which is concerned with participant relationship, status of participant, formality scale relating to the setting or type of interaction and the last is about the functional scales relating to the purposes or topic of interaction. As the reflection of reality, movie also contains communication. We can see the actors and actress dialogues in the movie. Every dialogue in the movie contains social dimensions. We know that from the movie script. Here, the researcher chooses Letter to Juliet movie script to analyze. The characters in this movie are coming from different countries and they are speaking English as their language in daily communication. By studying the social dimension in this movie script, can assist teachers in educating

Perhaps an influencial graduate student was behind it all? Or maybe an English professor there singled out The Summerset Review for some odd, beautiful reason, and assigned the class a project to send literary work our way? In reviewing the submissions, we were impressed, and we're happy to publish one of them in this issue, a nonfiction piece by an undergraduate, Amy Takabori, titled "A Reluctant Enthusiast," her first publication. We want to thank all those at BYU who tried us, and warm appreciation goes to the person who inspired all of this, whoever you are. Our Lit Pick of the Quarter this time is set inside a Catholic high school. Found in Blue Mesa Review, Issue #23, Spring 2010, the story is written by Steven Ramirez, titled "Judas Didn't Wear Shoes Anyway," where two students, Carlos and Espiridión, dole out the food in the cafeteria during lunch.

    Letters to Juliet Sophie dreams of writing for the famous gravure New Yorker, but it only works as a “verifier " of facts, names and dates with a boss who does not have great confidence in its means .     “LETTERS TO JULIET” Sophie is a good journalist who works for the famous newspaper "New Yorker", looking for a scoop to emerge and obtain confidence by her director. She decides to start a journey to Italy, as a sort of anticipated "honeymoon" with her husband-to-be. But soon the vacation turns into an opportunity for him to discover the gastronomic traditions of a rich and fascinating country and for her to find a story that will be the occasion to make the big "jump". So, wandering through the streets of Verona, Sophie visits the famous Juliet's house, where every day tourists from all over the world pin their sentimental hopes, in the form of letters affixed to the wall. It is duty of the “secretaries of Juliet” collecting these letters and respond to each of them. Sophie finds a love letter of an old woman, Claire, hidden for 50 years between the stones of the wall. She writes her answer to this letter and here we are Claire appearing in Verona with her nephew Charlie. Together they decide to leave to Tuscany looking for Claire's first teenage love, Lorenzo, who she has never forgotten. Charlie will be the "driver" of this adventure, even if he doesn't seem to have much sympathy for Sophie, appearing impatient, grumpy and defeatist because he's afraid that his grandmother may suffer discovering Lorenzo is dead or doesn't recognize her. During their journey they knock on many doors looking for the "right" Lorenzo and just when it seems their efforts have been vain, a man, riding a horse, appears in a vineyard.

Schreiber High School Wednesday, September 30, 1987 ZANETTI TAKES CHARGE Board Names Guidance Head as Acting Principal by Dave Weintraub When Dr. Frank Banta, Schreiber's principal for eight years, departed at the end (rf the last school year for a different job, he left some large shoes to fill. The school board and Superintendent Dr. William Heebink set out on a search for a new principal over the summer. Many applicants were reviewed, but no one was picked. The board and Dr. Heebink decided to extend the search through the 1987-88 school year. To fill the void Dr. Banta had left, they asked John Zanetti, Chairman of the Guidance Department, to serve as acting principal. He accepted, and was given a ten-month contract, which began in September. Most people who know Mr. Zanetti know him as a soft- spoken and amiable man. He has been in the Port Washington school system for many years, and he had humble beginnings. He started work at Salem School as a physical education teacher in 1958. He stayed there for six years and during that time in- troduced wrestling and lacrosse to the high school. He became the first coach of those teams. After Salem, he taught physical educa- tion at Schreiber for two years. He became a guidance counselor in 1967. He was appointed guidance chairman in 1980. He has now moved to the top of Schreiber's administrative lad- der. Has his transition been smooth? "I have an ulcer," he jokes. "Actually, I think I've ad- justed better than I thought I would.
