Guide to the Theater and Film M2506 1 Ephemera Collection M2506 Language of Material: English Contributing Institution: Department of Special Collections and University Archives Title: Theater and film ephemera collection source: Stark, Samuel source: Sloss, Hattie Hecht Identifier/Call Number: M2506 Physical Description: 23 Linear Feet (49 boxes, 3 oversize folders) Date (inclusive): 1830-1972 Date (bulk): 1880-1950 Abstract: Photographs, magazines, scrapbooks, and other material from multiple sources related to theater, motion pictures, and other performing arts, largely from the later 19th to mid-20th century. Special Collections and University Archives materials are stored offsite and must be paged 36 hours in advance. Conditions Governing Access Open for research. Note that material must be requested at least 36 hours in advance of intended use. Conditions Governing Use While Special Collections is the owner of the physical and digital items, permission to examine collection materials is not an authorization to publish. These materials are made available for use in research, teaching, and private study. Any transmission or reproduction beyond that allowed by fair use requires permission from the owners of rights, heir(s) or assigns. Some materials are believed to be in the public domain. There are no restrictions on use of public domain materials. Immediate Source of Acquisition Various sources. Scope and Contents Artificial collection of material related to theater, motion pictures, and other performing arts, mainly consisting of photographs, magazines, and scrapbooks, largely from the later 19th to mid-20th century. The first three series contain the bulk of the collection. Series 1 consists of a distinct collection of actor portraits mostly from the 1880s through the 1910s, many of which are signed. A number of photos have written references to pages in the scrapbooks in Series 2, which were once owned by Samuel Stark. Series 3 contains a large number of movie fan magazines mostly from the 1930s and 40s in variable condition. These also appear to be from multiple sources but were probably given to Stanford as a group (again, possibly by Stark). This collection contains most of the undescribed remainder of Stanford's theater-related archives, once a major collecting area. Many are listed in our catalog via this link: https://stanford.io/2QRVCTJ Preferred Citation [identification of item], Theater and film ephemera collection (M2506). San Francisco photographers include Terkelson & Henry, Houseworth, Taber, and Bradley & Rulofson. Many photographs include references to related pages in scrapbooks devoted to actors in Series 2 (i.e. "Book A-2 p.45").

Series 2. Actor scrapbooks Scope and Contents This series of scrapbooks of theater and motion picture actors was once owned (if not originally assembled by) Samuel Stark, donor of the majority of Stanford Library's theater collections. However, it does not appear to be related to the Sam Stark Scrapbook Collection, 1860-1950 (M0622) https://oac.cdlib.org/findaid/ark:/13030/ft5g5003wk. The majority of images are clipped from magazines, although there are also prints, newspaper articles, handwritten & typed notes, programs, handbills, and loose material. Material was gathered through at least 1959, but most are from the first several decades of the century. Some pages or images are autographed. The albums are organized by last name. Unfortunately, most of "R" through "Z" appears to be missing.

Condition is generally poor; many are missing covers, have torn pages, and are marked up with doodles and other defacement (apparently drawing mustaches on femme fatales was a popular pastime). A few issues are very clean, however. Many can be found onlimne at the Media History Digital Library (http://www.mediahistoryproject.org/)
