So starším bratom ho spája fakt, že v dospelosti obaja vo svojich filmoch stvárňovali pestrú paletu psychicky zložitých a pomerne komplikovaných ľudských charakterov. Temné zákutia (The Yards, 2000) a Noc patrí nám (We Own the Night, 2007). Opakovane tiež spolupracoval s ďaľšími režisérmi ako Paul 1Takéto označenie sa objavuje hneď vo viacerých článkoch napríklad v článku „Is Joaquin Phoenix set to be the greatest actor of his generation?“ denníku Theguardian alebo článok z Nytimes s názvom „The Weird Brilliance of Joaquin Phoenix.“ 5 Thomas Anderson: Majster (The Master, 2012) a Skrytá vada (Inherent Vice, 2014) alebo M. Night Shyamalanom na filmoch Znamenia (Signs, 2002) a Osada (The Village, 2004) či Gusom V. Santom: Zomrieť pre (To Die For, 1995) a Neboj sa, daľeko neutečie (Don't Worry, He Won't Get Far on Foot, 2018). Ako bolo spomenuté k hercovej „tajomnej aure“, vo verejnom živote prispieva a z časti aj koreluje výber a reprezentácia jeho charakterov stvárnených vo filmoch. Phoenixova filmografia je z prevažnej časti tvorená rolami psychicky komplikovaných alebo narušených postáv, často stojacich na okraji spoločnosti. Postáv ťažko skúšaných nepriazňou osudu alebo introvertne orientovaných a samotárskych jedincov. Stuart McGurk vo svojom článku trefne zhrnul pocity z výberu a reprezentácie hercových doterajších postáv. McGurk označuje Phoenixa za majstra vo vyjadrovaní úzkosti (anxiety artist).2 Hercova filmografia je žánrovo veľmi rozmanitá a Phoenix má zastúpenie takmer u každého filmového žánru (od romantických komédií, animovaného filmu, akčného krimi thrilleru až po historické a životopisné drámy). Výnimku z tejto širokej škály komplikovaných ambivalentných charakterov predstavuje len hŕstka filmov. Spomeňme napr. film Mária Magdaléna (Mary Magdalene, Garth Davis, 2018), kde stvárnil postavu Ježiša nazaretského alebo film Posádka 49 (Ladder 49, Jay Russell, 2004), kde stvárňuje pomerne konvenčnú postavu amerického hrdinu v postave hasiča, ktorý riskuje svoj život za záchranu druhého človeka. Práca je rozdelená do dvoch hlavných častí. V prvej teoreticko – metodologickej časti bude vyhodnotená dostupná literatúra a pramene k predmetu práce. Následne bude predstavená metodológia práce, ktorá bude čerpať z oblasti star studies a prístupov Richarda Dyera v jeho publikácii Stars3 a Paula McDonalda a knihy Hollywood Stardom 4 . Druhá časť predstavuje chronologickú prípadovú štúdiu vývoja hviezdneho obrazu herca Joaquina Phoenixa – pričom budú podľa metodológie práce analyzované vybrané filmové projekty so zreteľom na dôležitosť a prípadné míľniky v hercovej kariére – Phoenixova publicita, príspevky, reakcie novinárov a kritikov a prípadné

Joker (2019 film) - Wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joker_(2019_film) Joker (2019 film) Joker is a 2019 American psychological thriller film directed by Todd Joker Phillips, who co-wrote the screenplay with Scott Silver. The film, based on DC Comics characters, stars Joaquin Phoenix as the Joker. An origin story set in 1981, the film follows Arthur Fleck, a failed stand-up comedian who turns to a life of crime and chaos in Gotham City. Robert De Niro, Zazie Beetz, Frances Conroy, Brett Cullen, Glenn Fleshler, Bill Camp, Shea Whigham, and Marc Maron appear in supporting roles. Joker was produced by Warner Bros. Pictures, DC Films, and Joint Effort in association with Bron Creative and Village Roadshow Pictures, and distributed by Warner Bros. Phillips conceived Joker in 2016 and wrote the script with Silver throughout 2017. The two were inspired by 1970s character studies and the films of Martin Scorsese, who was initially attached to the project as a producer. The graphic novel Batman: The Killing Joke (1988) was the basis for the premise, but Phillips and Silver otherwise did not look to specific comics for inspiration. Phoenix became attached in February 2018 and was cast that July, while the majority of the cast signed on by August. Theatrical release poster Principal photography took place in New York City, Jersey City, and Newark, from September to December 2018. It is the first live-action Directed by Todd Phillips theatrical Batman film to receive an R-rating from the Motion Picture Produced by Todd Phillips Association of America, due to its violent and disturbing content.

  • Derogatory Discourses of Veganism and the Reproduction of Speciesism in UK 1 National Newspapers Bjos 1348 134..152
The British Journal of Sociology 2011 Volume 62 Issue 1 Vegaphobia: derogatory discourses of veganism and the reproduction of speciesism in UK 1 national newspapers bjos_1348 134..152 Matthew Cole and Karen Morgan Abstract This paper critically examines discourses of veganism in UK national newspapers in 2007. In setting parameters for what can and cannot easily be discussed, domi- nant discourses also help frame understanding. Discourses relating to veganism are therefore presented as contravening commonsense, because they fall outside readily understood meat-eating discourses. Newspapers tend to discredit veganism through ridicule, or as being difficult or impossible to maintain in practice. Vegans are variously stereotyped as ascetics, faddists, sentimentalists, or in some cases, hostile extremists. The overall effect is of a derogatory portrayal of vegans and veganism that we interpret as ‘vegaphobia’. We interpret derogatory discourses of veganism in UK national newspapers as evidence of the cultural reproduction of speciesism, through which veganism is dissociated from its connection with debates concerning nonhuman animals’ rights or liberation. This is problematic in three, interrelated, respects. First, it empirically misrepresents the experience of veganism, and thereby marginalizes vegans. Second, it perpetuates a moral injury to omnivorous readers who are not presented with the opportunity to understand veganism and the challenge to speciesism that it contains. Third, and most seri- ously, it obscures and thereby reproduces

New releases mostly on the gloomy side | Denton Record-Chronicle | News for Denton County, Texas | Entertainment: Movies 04/08/2008 08:51 AM New releases mostly on the gloomy side 11:15 AM CDT on Sunday, April 6, 2008 By Boo Allen/Film Critic Prepare this week for some brooding intensity: Rare appearances by two distinct artists mark There Will Be Blood, the fifth movie from writer/director Paul Thomas Anderson, his first since 2002. And, in an Oscar-winning performance, Daniel Day-Lewis returns to the screen for the first time since 2005. Lewis plays Daniel Plainview, a turn-of-the-20th-century oilman, mean, single-focused, and devoid of any limiting attributes such as honor, truth, or kindness. Anderson delivers an authentic portrait of this era, as shown in the DVD supplement The Story of Petroleum. Anderson dips into Upton Sinclair’s obscure novel Oil! for his source, staying with Plainview and the chronicling of his fortunes. This love of money sounds cautionary warnings, as the film’s various characters fall under the spell promised by the riches of an oil strike. Despite the film’s almost epic sweep, Anderson stays close to Daniel Plainview, knowing that the conflict buried in this intense man signals the greatest drama. The singular subplot has Paul Dano playing a smugly religious type involved in a constant, ill-fated feud with Plainview, a battle that further defines Plainview and his quest for supremacy. Oscar-winning cinematographer Robert Elswit works with Anderson to render his customary long takes, but the focus stays mostly on the era’s drabness.

Stohler FacultyAdviser: Dr, Dennis Klein r'^dw May 13,2020 )ol, Masters of Arts in Holocaust & Genocide Studies Kean University In partialfulfillumt of the rcquirementfar the degee of Moster of A* Abstract: I focused my research on modern, American hate groups. I found some criteria for early- warning signs of antisemitic, bigoted and genocidal activities. I included a summary of neo-Nazi and white supremacy groups in modern American and then moved to a more specific focus on contemporary and prominent groups like Atomwaffen Division, the Proud Boys, the Vinlanders Social Club, the Base, Rise Against Movement, the Hammerskins, and other prominent antisemitic and hate-driven groups. Trends of hate-speech, acts of vandalism and acts of violence within the past fifty years were examined. Also, how law enforcement and the legal system has responded to these activities has been included as well. The different methods these groups use for indoctrination of younger generations has been an important aspect of my research: the consistent use of hate-rock and how hate-groups have co-opted punk and hardcore music to further their ideology. Live-music concerts and festivals surrounding these types of bands and how hate-groups have used music as a means to fund their more violent activities have been crucial components of my research as well. The use of other forms of music and the reactions of non-hate-based artists are also included. The use of the internet, social media and other digital means has also be a primary point of discussion.

ROLE OF DEVELOPED COUNTRIES IN THE NATIONAL CONFLICTS OF THE THIRD WORLD REFLECTED IN TERRY GEORGE’S HOTEL RWANDA MOVIE: A SOCIOLOGICAL APPROACH RESEARCH PAPER Submitted as a Partial Fulfillment of Requirements For Getting Bachelor Degree of Education In English Department By: DWI NURYANTI A 320 030 239 SCHOOL OF TEACHER TRAINING AND EDUCATION MUHAMMADIYAH UNIVERSITY OF SURAKARTA 2008 CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION A. Background of the Study Hotel Rwanda (2004) was a historical movie that was released on September 11th, 2004, ten years after the humanitarian tragedy happened on April 6th, 1994 in Rwanda. Terry George as the director together with A. Kitman Ho, produced that movie and together with Keir Pearson wrote the script of the movie. Through the scenario, Terry portrayed the sorrow of Rwandans at that time. He also showed the intervention and role of developed countries in the national conflicts of Rwanda that caused the civil war and the genocide. Genocidal that happened in Rwanda as the impact of the national conflict. Genocide is the deliberate and systematic destruction of an ethnic, religious or national group (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Genocide). Lions Gate Films and United Artist distributed that movie. It was starred by Don Cheadle as Paul Rusesabagina, Sophie Okonedo as Tatiana Rusesabagina, Joaquin Phoenix as Jack Daglish the cameraman, and Nick Nolte as Colonel Oliver.
