They made it clear that they possessed certain magical secrets of their profession, but they mentioned them evasively. Now and then they made lofty artistic pronouncements, but they showed a more sincere interest in anecdotes about scenarios that were written on a cuff during a gay supper.... This might well be a description of Hollywood during any period of its cultivated silence on the matter of film-making. Actually, it is Leningrad in 1924, described by Grigori Kozintsev in his memoirs.1 It is so seldom that we are allowed to study the disclosures of a Hollywood film-maker about his medium that I cannot recall the last instance that preceded John Howard Lawson's book. There is no dearth of books about Hollywood, but when did any other book come from there that takes such articulate pride in the art that is-or was-made there? I have never understood exactly why the makers of American films felt it necessary to hide their methods and aims under blankets of coyness and anecdotes, the one as impenetrable as the other. -

Exoplanets, Extremophiles, and the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence Jill C. Tarter 1.0. Introduction We discovered the very first planetary worlds in orbit around a body other than the Sun in 1991 (Wolzczan and Frail 1992). They were small bodies (0.02, 4.3, and 3.9 times as massive as the Earth) and presented a puzzle because they orbit a neutron star (the remnant core of a more massive star that had previously exploded as a supernova) and it was not clear whether these bodies survived the explosion or reformed from the stellar debris. They still present a puzzle, but today we know of over five hundred other planetary bodies in orbit around hundreds of garden variety stars in the prime of their life cycle. Many of these planets are more massive than Jupiter, and some orbit closer to their stars than Mercury around the Sun. To date we have not found another planetary system that is an exact analog of the Earth (and the other planets of our solar system) orbiting a solar-type star, but we think that is because we have not yet had the right observing instruments. Those are on the way. In the next few years, we should know whether other Earth mass planets are plentiful or scarce. At the same time that we have been developing the capabilities to detect distant Earths, we have also been finding that life on Earth occurs in places that earlier scientists would have considered too hostile to support life. Scientists were wrong, or at least didn’t give microbes the respect they deserve. -

Geologic Map of the Source Region of Shalbatana Vallis, Mars Dan Berman, Cathy Weitz, Alexis Rodriguez, and David Crown Planetary Mappers Meeting Flagstaff, AZ June 12-13, 2017 Introduction •We are currently producing a 1:500,000-scale USGS geologic map of MTM quadrangles 00042 and 00047 in the Xanthe Terra region of Mars (2.5°S - 2.5°N, 310° - 320°E). The map region has been extensively modified by outflow channels and chaotic terrains and contains cratered plains deformed by subsidence. Mapping is being conducted on a THEMIS IR daytime base mosaic, with CTX and HiRISE images as supplements where available. •The overarching goal of this project is to develop an understanding of how regionally integrated hydrologic systems have been affected by (1) impact crater formation, (2) melting of subsurface ice leading to the generation of subsurface cavity space and then subsidence, and (3) erosional and depositional flooding events of various types and ages. Mamajekb aDepartment of Earth and Environmental Sciences, University of Rochester, Rochester, New York, 14627, USA bDepartment of Physics and Astronomy, University of Rochester, Rochester, New York, 14627, USA Abstract The onset and nature of the earliest geomagnetic field is important for under- standing the evolution of the core, atmosphere and life on Earth. A record of the early geodynamo is preserved in ancient silicate crystals containing minute magnetic inclusions. These data indicate the presence of a geodynamo during the Paleoarchean, between 3.4 and 3.45 billion years ago. While the magnetic field sheltered Earth's atmosphere from erosion at this time, standoff of the so- lar wind was greatly reduced, and similar to that during modern extreme solar storms. These conditions suggest that intense radiation from the young Sun may have modified the atmosphere of the young Earth by promoting loss of volatiles, including water. Such effects would have been more pronounced if the field were absent or very weak prior to 3.45 billion years ago, as suggested by some models of lower mantle evolution. The frontier is thus trying to obtain geomagnetic field records that are 3.45 billion-years-old, as well as constrain- ing solar wind pressure for these times. UPDATE Lighting the Way IT TAKES A LOT OF ENERGY to make something burn brightly. The same is true of an idea or a person. It’s easier to go along as one of crowd. The status quo is comfortable. It takes curiosity, stamina, and that all-important spark to kindle greatness, and it takes a Michigan Victor to keep the spark burning as a flame. Leaders and Vic- tors shine brighter than their counterparts because they have figured out how to burn — even amid shadows. But how do they ignite and feed their individual sparks? The Victors in this issue all exemplify one consistent theme: Their brilliance defies logical, run-of-the-mill thinking. Just as the massive secrets of the universe can be un- locked by the tiniest particles, Victors are brave enough to embrace the contradictory. Victors who help others get ahead. Those who serve others become leaders. Victors who give get the most back. Those who strive for deeper understanding throw out much of what they think they know. Leaders who have found a way to unleash their light didn’t just pull it out from under the bushel. They used the bushel itself to light a thousand other fires. -

Key Points: • Alluvial fans on Mars did not form during a short-lived climate anomaly • We use the distribution of observed craters embedded in alluvial fans to place a lower limit on fan formation time of >20 Ma • The lower limit on fan formation time increases to >(100-300) Ma when model estimates of craters completely buried in the fans are included Abstract. Large alluvial fan deposits on Mars record relatively recent habitable surface conditions (≲3.5 Ga, Late Hesperian – Amazonian). We find net sedimentation rate <(4-8) μm/yr in the alluvial-fan deposits, using the frequency of craters that are interbedded with alluvial-fan deposits as a fluvial-process chronometer. Considering only the observed interbedded craters sets a lower bound of >20 Myr on the total time interval spanned by alluvial-fan aggradation, >103-fold longer than previous lower limits. A more realistic approach that corrects for craters fully entombed in the fan deposits raises the lower bound to >(100-300) Myr. Several factors not included in our calculations would further increase the lower bound. The lower bound rules out fan-formation by a brief climate anomaly. Therefore, during the Late Hesperian – Amazonian on Mars, persistent or repeated processes permitted habitable surface conditions. 1. Introduction. Introduction: Shalbatana Vallis is an ancient river mineralogy, origin, and placement of Fe/Mg-rich and valley on Mars, the westernmost of the southern Al-rich phyllosilicates in the region Chryse outflow channels. McFarlin† Abstract Did Orson Welles co-author the infamous War of the Worlds broad- cast? The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals has told us no, primarily because he only contributed the idea behind the broadcast, and ideas alone can’t be copyrighted. “An Idea of Authorship” challenges this premise—that ideas, no matter how significant, cannot qualify for joint authorship in collaborative works—and argues that we as a society should, under certain circumstances, recognize idea-contributors like Welles as joint authors.
