In fact, people who practice deep belly breathing as little as 10 minutes a day have a much less chance of developing cancer and heart disease, handle stress more effectively and generally have better overall health and well-being. Deep diaphragmatic breathing is one of the simplest yet most effective ways of improving one’s health with the least amount of cost and time investment. To help you realize the importance of deep diaphragmatic breathing, here are 12 benefits to regularly practicing this healthy habit: • Reduces the risk factors for heart disease by lowering bad cholesterol (LDL), raising good cholesterol (HDL), lowering blood pressure and stabilizing blood sugars. • Cuts chances of cancer by as much as 400% • Reduces negative stress by lowering the stress hormone cortisol • Helps reduce cravings for processed carbohydrates (junk food) • Cuts chances of diabetes by strengthening the insulin beta receptor sites • Improves quality of sleep by improving stage 1 and stage 4 sleep cycles • Lengthens the cells’ life span by cleansing the cells more thoroughly through increase lymphatic flow • Slows the aging process by increasing the secretion of growth hormone (anti aging hormone) • Optimizes the immune system by strengthening T-cell formation and improving Lymphocyte production. • Improves your mood by elevating the ”feel good” hormone, serotonin, and other positive endorphins • Improves mental focus and concentration by increasing blood flow to the Pre-Frontal Cortex of the brain • Improves the quality and effectiveness of meditation by changing brain wave activity from the more stressful beta wave activity to a more relaxing and healthier alpha and theta brain wavelengths. Advanced Water Aerobics Monday & Wednesday Here’s how to reap the amazing benefits of deep diaphragmatic breathing: Sit in a comfortable chair with your eyes closed and inhale very slowly through your nose using your diaphragm 8:30 am-9:30 am in the Pool (your belly should expand while you inhale with little or no chest movement). Once your lungs Exercise in the PAC are full and your belly has expanded, hold your breath for about 6 to 12 seconds. Then slowly Monday, Wednesday & Friday exhale through your mouth making sure you use your belly to push the air out. Once your lungs are empty and your belly is contracted, repeat the cycle. Your goal is to complete 10 cycles 9:30 am in the PAC (inhale, hold, exhale) for 8 to 10 minutes of deep diaphragmatic breathing a day. • 4 • The Pinecone | February 2018 Learning About HEART HEALTH

Please join us February 21st at 1:30 pm in the PAC for our Smart Moves presentation on this topic. Advanced Water Aerobics Monday & Wednesday The heart is a muscle that is usually the size of your fist. To be so small it is very powerful. The heart has two pumps. The stronger pump 8:30 am-9:30 am in the Pool uses arteries to send blood with oxygen away from the heart. The other pump uses veins to bring blood back to the heart and sends it to the lungs to get more oxygen. The heart keeps you alive and keeping it healthy is very important. Exercise in the PAC Monday, Wednesday & Friday Aging can cause changes in the heart and blood vessels but the main heart problems are caused by disease and not age, although, the 9:30 am in the PAC changes that happen as one gets older can sometimes cause heart disease. Changes in the heart that are a result of age are blood vessels become stiffer, causing some parts of your heart wall to thicken to help with blood flow. Your valves may become thicker and stiffer, causing Tai Chi an increase in leaks or problems with pumping blood out of the heart. Living a healthy lifestyle can help you avoid or delay serious illness. Monday 2:00 pm in the PAC Heart disease consists of a range of conditions that affect your heart. Blood vessel disease, coronary artery disease, heart rhythm problems, heart defects you are born with, and etc. are all classified as heart disease. Many forms of heart disease can be prevented or treated with Yoga Stretch a healthy lifestyle. Risk factors that are linked with having an unhealthy lifestyle are smoking, obesity, physical inactivity, and poor diet. Wednesday Other risk factors that can contribute to heart disease are family history, diabetes, high blood cholesterol levels, high blood pressure, stress, 10:30 am in the PAC and poor hygiene.

Men’s Only Water Aerobics To prevent heart disease one may need to change their lifestyle all together. Tuesday & Thursday A good start is to stop smoking if you do. You want to get your health 8:30 am - 9:15 am in the Pool conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, and high cholesterol Arthritis Foundation controlled. Everyone should exercise at least 30 minutes a few times Water Aerobics a week and follow a healthy diet low in salt and saturated fats. Doing Tuesday & Thursday those last two things will help maintain a healthy weight which is key to 9:30 am - 10:15 am in the Pool a healthy lifestyle.
