(Janice and Don are not related other than in their love ofjazz.) Don Friedman has been acclaimed by his many admiring critics as “one of the most creative pianists in jazz today. . . amazingly versatile, buoyant, and swinging.” Mr. Friedman has played and recorded with many jazz greats including ; , Phil Woods, Bobby Hackett, Buddy DeFranco, and “The Tonight Show” Band. He has written and published a number of compositions and currently is on the music faculty of New York University where he teaches jazz piano techniques, improvisation, and theory; Janice Friedman’s playing is marked by extensive classical training and full dedication to the jazz idiom. At age 27 she became pianist for the Woody Herman Orchestra, touring nationwide. She has performed in concert with Milt Hinton, Lew Tabakin, and Cab Calloway, among others, and continues to work regularly with cornetist Warren Vache. On her Grammy-nominated CD “Finger Paintings” she is joined by trumpet great Claudio Roditi. Ms. Friedman has performed at numerous festivals, among them the JVC International Jazz Festival, the Greenwich Village Jazz Festival, the Waterloo Jazz Festival, and the Jazz Series at Rutgers University where she is a professor of music. Ticket sales for this concert begin November 7 at both libraries. Tickets are $1.00 for adults, 50 for students, senior citizens, and persons with disabilities. A generous donation by an anonymous benefactor has made it possible for the library to acquire a second piano for this concert. The Trustees have commissioned award-winning tile artist Esther Tollen to design an original mural depicting East Northport agrarian life in the late 19th century. The mural, de signed in the primitive style, will be installed in the main reading room of the East Northport Library on the wall which backs the fireplace. Each of the 272 tiles which will comprise the 8.5 ft. x 8 ft. mural will be handpainted using a variety of underglaze colors. Contributions to the project will be $50.00. The names of those individuals who have made a $50 contribution will be handpainted on a tile plaque installed on the side walls of the fireplace adjoining the mural.

The tile mural will be located on About the Artist the back wall of the fireplace in Esther Tollen, a resident of East Northport, is an the East Northport Library. award-winning artist who specializes in handpainted ceramic tile, faux, and decorative finishes. She is on the faculty of the Art League of Long Island (formerly Huntington Art League) and is an instructor for Long Island University, BOCES Arts- in-Education, and Planting Fields Arboretum. Mrs. Tollen is the recipient of more than 100 awards for ceramic design and her work has been exhibited in designer showcases for the Oyster Bay Division of Cultural and Performing Arts, and in public libraries on Long Island. In 1993 she received an mdi vidual Artist Grant from the New York State Council on the Arts. Esther Tollen is the owner of Earth Designs, a decprative arts studio located in East Northport. In preparation for the Tile Mural of Old East North- port, Mrs. Tollen has researched the library’s historical and art collections to find authentic details of 19th century East Northport life and to inspire her recreation of a time when the pace of life was more leisurely than it is today. Individuals or families wishing to contrib ute to the Tile Mural of Old East Northport should complete the form on the back of this page and return it to the library along with a check for $50 payable to the Northport-East Northport Public Library. The deadline for contributions to the tile mural is December 31, 1998.A successful fund-raising effort will result in the completion and installation of the mural by March 1, 1999. Your contribution will make possible an original, beautiful, and enduring work of art for the East View of East Northport Library main reading room. Northport Library.
