5:30-6:30 pm (22:30-23:30 utc) Legacy Meeting

We have indeed Pivoted for the Pandemic. When 2020 conference chairs Nancy Miller and Carol Engel-Enright embarked on plans for the ITAA Annual Meeting to be held in Denver, no one could have predicted the way the year 2020 would roll out! What a change we have seen since we departed from Las Vegas just a year ago … and what a challenge ITAA and its members have faced in recent months to ensure that this Annual Meeting would happen. Nevertheless, we’ve persisted and here we are. And while “here” may be your own office, living room, family room, or den, incredibly, we have a contemporary and exciting program with will connect us as an organization, inspire us as scholars and teachers, and empower us as leaders in our profession and in our academic communities.

Reflecting on the joint efforts of many people who pivoted mid-planning, I want to affirm that members of ITAA should feel confident in their leaders. I want to thank the many people who have been involved in this conference planning, all of whom have risen to the occasion with creativity, thoughtfulness, and thoroughness. ITAA Executive Council members reacted quickly and thoughtfully with respect to plans for the 2020 Annual Meeting when the severity of the pandemic became known. Vice President for Conferences Nancy Rutherford chaired a Virtual Conference Planning Task Force comprised of Kim Hahn, Domenique Jones, Nancy Miller, Mary Ruppert- Stroescu, and Sherry Schofield. Task Force participants began deliberations in June and provided a report with virtual annual meeting recommendations in early August. What a team effort!

This year, like no year we’ve previously experienced, ITAA committee and track chairs for creative design, research, teaching, and concept sessions responded to the need for a different way of launching our presentation sessions. Thank you, Young-A Lee, Kim Hahn, Casey Stannard, Laura Kane, Julie Becker, Gargi Bhaduri, Julie Chang, Michelle Childs, Denise Green, Sejin Ha, Sara Jablon- Roberts, Catherine Jai, Ji Hye Kang, Seung-Hee Lee, David Loranger, Seoha Min, Amanda Muhammad, Linda Niehm, Huiju Park, and Li Zhao! It is with anticipation and excitement that I look forward to active participation in the session discussions that will enable us to really get to know about the scholarship (including design scholarship) and teaching trends occurring in textiles and apparel.

I’m filling my e-calendar with the events and sessions I’ll be attending, and will indicate “out of office – attending a conference” in my emails – albeit virtual. I’m “going” to the Annual Meeting! I’ve prepared ahead with “conference meals” – and have on reserve a nice bottle of wine for the celebration events like the welcome reception.

Keep pivoting, we’re in this together!

2020 ITAA Keynote Speaker J.J. Collier, Founder Collier Brands, llc

My design career began as an athlete. I was a top rider on the Pro Snowboard Tour when I first discovered my love of functional apparel and equipment. During my last two years on tour I bought a sewing machine and started building clothing. The craft of making functional clothing combined with a lifetime of natural drawing ability and a grand imagination, led to the pursuit of design and fashion as a career. After two years building one-off styles by hand for custom clients, I was contacted by Salomon about their intention to launch skiwear. I was offered the role as their first apparel designer and my career was launched. During the last fifteen years, I have worked at Salomon Headquarters in France, lead outerwear design for Ralph Lauren’s RLX and Black Label collections. I lead the Design and Product teams for Spyder through five years of growth and have been Chief Design Officer of Triple Aught Design in San Francisco. Along the way I was involved with reinventing top active and outerwear brands. Most recently, I lead the Apparel Innovation team for VF Corp at their new headquarters in Colorado. Today, I guide brands into the future of apparel design, product development, and storytelling at Collier Brands, llc. Through my career I have guided many students and graduates from apparel design program. Many of my most capable team members were interns and graduates from Design and Merchandising university programs. They brought solid skills from their educational programs. Today, technology and trends are outpacing the curriculum and present opportunities to elevate and innovate skills, learning, and knowledge. Things are moving fast. I live to dream up new ideas and carefully craft stories that will engage and motivate team members and consumers; seeking to find the ratio of inspired design with commercial considerations.

THE PATH TO CAPABILITY… CRAFTING A FUTURE-PROOF APPAREL DESIGN CAREER S J.J. COLLIER, COLLIER BRANDS, LLC D J.J.’s mission is to inspire and guide designers, brand builders, and the market toward a more conscious -and more stylish- future in apparel design. In 20 years designing for Ralph Lauren, Spyder, Salomon, Triple Aught A Design and other brands, he has had the pleasure of creating great product and working within –or leading- teams of incredible people. The challenge of late has been the clothing industry’s previously-invisible decline Y into commoditized product lines, a lack of innovation in design and sustainability, and a slow reaction to new sales and marketing models that much of the world –and consumers- had already adopted. The economic impact of Covid-19 revealed how fragile many non-adaptive brands and retailers were and N the industry is in a critical period of reflection. Challenges abound, as do opportunities for positive change. J.J. loves this work and believe the next iterations of creation, production, and engagement will be far more interesting than the previous model had become. O Going forward: V What do we want for our industry and careers within it? E What tools are required to evolve it most positively?

How can we prepare students and professionals for their next chapter in apparel design and M development? B J.J. will share concepts on digital product creation, regionalized production, authentic sustainability missions and more in answering those questions. E R

The university catwalk is often used as a promotional tool by programs to highlight their student designers. H This panel will discuss the different types of fashion shows held at their own school and look at different business models which keep them going. We will also touch on different methods of displaying student work U such as museum exhibits and virtual/live displays. Is the traditional fashion show needed in an era of social media and COVID? We believe that by examining the different methods of putting on a fashion show that R members will have the opportunity to reimagine what their fashion show could be.

Human Body in the Digital Era: Virtual Technology and Its Applications in Textiles and Apparel S Coordinators: Juyeon Park, Seoul National University; and Jennifer Paff Ogle, Colorado State University Presenters: Fatma Baytar, Cornell University; Jennifer Harmon, University of Wyoming; Jessica Ridgway- D Clayton, Florida State University; and Yingjiao Xu, North Carolina State University A This session is intended to provide the ITAA conference audience with a unique opportunity to learn from the invited presenters about their research experience with integration of emerging virtual technology in human body-related research and to exchange ideas to provoke creative adoption of the technology in Y future research among researchers in the field of textiles and apparel. For example, 3D body scanning, originally developed as an anthropometric measurement tool, has been widely adopted in various industry sectors, including apparel manufacturing, e-commerce, entertainment, and healthcare. The recent add-on of virtual reality offers new possibilities for the 3D technology in fields where a realistic visual representation of N the body may be valuable. We anticipate that the contents of the discussion will introduce the audience to recent research examples of novel technology use in our field, as we live in the digital era, where virtual O technologies rapidly change the apparel manufacturing process and our shopping experience as consumers in the e-commerce platform. Also, we will soon encounter our virtual body in the entertainment and other businesses during our daily living. We believe that hosting this panel discussion on the proposed theme is V timely and is critical to promoting understanding about the current stance of the technology through practical application cases. The session also will help us to consider future directions for undergraduate and E graduate education and research, as it is our hope to facilitate a flexible and adaptive approach toward technology in those who attend this special topic session and to encourage them to actively engage with the M technology in their teaching and research. B Preparing the Professional: The Impact of Internships Coordinator: Jennifer Worrell, Colorado State University Presenters: Carol Engel-Enright, Colorado State University; Jessica L. THE FUTURE…INNOVATION AND TECHNOLOGY PATHS IN APPAREL N TRENT BUSH, ARTILECT

The global apparel industry is entering a new era of innovation and technology-backed change, and this O revolution will affect every aspect of the way clothes are made, and what they are made from. From a materials perspective, rapid advances are occurring in every key metric, including increased performance, V durability, and sustainability.

The ways garments will be made are also advancing very rapidly, driven by trends like 3D design and E development, full-garment knitting, mass-customization, and personalized apparel systems that will promise apparel will be created faster, lighter, and more nimble. In addition, these advances finally offer an M opportunity to leapfrog traditional sewing technologies to bring specialized garment manufacturing back to more localized production locations. B Other innovations are also fast approaching which will bring intelligence to traditionally static apparel systems, offering many interesting advanced capabilities in performance, traceability, and authenticity, E allowing apparel to become a leading product category in the Internet of Things. Like it or not, many of these advances are already here, and I look forward to opening few doors to a higher level of thinking in R relation to the traditional apparel industry. In fact, these advances are so exciting, they form the very foundation of the new brand I am creating. The future is now. 2 0 Concurrent Session 7, 1:00 – 1:45 pm (18:00-18:45 utc)

B E Salon Session: Elevating and Evaluating Curatorial Scholarship Co-Coordinators: Denise Nicole Green, Cornell University and Kelly L. Reddy-Best, Iowa State University R Fashion curation is an integral form of public scholarship within our field; however, curation has historically been overlooked as such, in part because unlike creative design scholarship, we have not collectively developed nor agreed upon methods for peer review. As a result, curatorial work is often not considered in tenure-review processes, despite fashion exhibitions meeting the core principles of disseminating 2 scholarship beyond the academy. In this experimental salon session, we will present fashion exhibitions rooted in rigor and research followed by discussions on elevating curatorial scholarship. 0
