Myth and Patriarchy in Deepa Mehta's Heaven on Earth
223 Manjeet Roden: Deepa Mehta Myth and Patriarchy in Deepa Mehta’s Heaven on Earth Manjeet Ridon University of Nottingham _______________________________________________________________ This article analyses how Heaven on Earth (2008) uses Indian mythology to expose the reality of culturally driven violence against Sikh Punjabi women in Canada, occurring as a result of transnational marriages between diaspora-based Non-Resident Indian (hereafter NRI) men and Sikh Punjabi women. Referring to Bruce Lincoln’s theory of myth as ideology, I argue that the film explores how some of these women have experienced marginalisation and how a discourse of abuse can be challenged through myth. _____________________________________________________________ My analysis of Deepa Mehta’s Heaven on Earth (2008) focuses on the fictional depiction of a poor, working-class, first-generation Indian family, living in Brampton, Ontario, which provides a microcosm of the pressures and realities of everyday immigrant life affecting the family from within. The text represents the ancient Indian myth of the Sheesh Naag, the King Cobra, with the ability to shape-shift and transform into human form, to raise awareness about the issue of culturally driven violence against women in South Asian Canadian communities, which is on the increase in Canada’s immigrant communities (Papp) and, along with the incidence of gang rape,1 an even more alarming trend in India (Lakhani). Mehta’s interpretation of the myth is based on Naga-Mandala (1994), a popular play by Girish Karnad, a South Indian dramatist heavily influenced by ancient Indian mythology. Karnad’s play is a story about the mythical figure of a cobra, which, in human form, rescues a lonely bride from an abusive husband and empowers her through storytelling. -

ACTIVITY REPORT 2014-15 10TH ANNIVERSARY PROJECT ELAN celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2014 and received project funding from the Government of Canada through the Department of Canadian Heritage for a number of special activities. The first was to feature trailblazers in building Quebec’s current dynamic English- language arts community from the sparsely populated, marginal scene of the 1970s and 80s. Three panel discussions were presented in collaboration with POP Montreal and Expozine: The Montreal Formula: Thinking outside the box for survival in Montreal arts (POP Montreal) with Albert Nerenberg (host; filmmaker and laughologist), Murray Lightburn (the Dears), Krista Muir (Lederhosen Lucil), and visual artist J.C. Little; Literary Legacies: A Montreal Story (POP Montreal) with host Katia Grubisic (writer and translator), Linda Leith, founder of Blue Metropolis Foundation, and Marianne Ackerman, founder of the bilingual theatre company Theatre 1774 and Rover Arts; and Montreal Blooming: From Backwater to Music Hotbed (Expozine) with Howard Bilerman (legendary Montreal producer, former drummer for Arcade Fire), Kevin Komoda (Rational Youth), Ryhna Thompson (Envision Management), and musician Molly Sweeney. For our 10th anniversary year, ELAN co-produced Schmoozers with partners from each of the major artistic disciplines: April in collaboration with the Quebec Writers' Federation; June in collaboration with the St-Ambroise Montreal International Fringe Festival; October in collaboration with the Montreal Film Group; and December at McGill's Schulich School of Music, with a focus on students. Eastern Bloc was selected as the venue for ELAN's 10th anniversary event because it is a well- equipped visual and media arts centre. A photo retrospective of ELAN's 10-year history was projected on one wall while the Wonderwall, created at three stations where guests were photographed as they arrived, was projected on another. -

PART TWO: DOCUMENTARY FILMS, running from March 26 through May 12 in the Museum's Roy and Niuta Titus Auditorium, will trace the develop ment of the documentary form at NFBC, and will be highlighted by a selection of some of the finest films directed by Donald Brittain, whose work has won wide acclaim and numerous awards. PART TWO: DOCUMENTARY will get off to an auspicious start with twelve of Donald Brittain's powerful and unconventional portraits of exceptional individuals. Best known in this country for "Volcano: An Inquiry Into The Life and Death of Malcolm Lowry" (1976), Brittain brings his personal stamp of creative interpretation to such subjects as America's love affair with the automobile in "Henry Ford's America" (1976) ; the flamboyant Lord Thompson of Fleet Street (the newspaper baron who just sold the cornerstone of his empire, The London Times) in "Never A Backward Step" (1966); Norman Bethune, the Canadian poet/ doctor/revolutionary who became a great hero in China when he marched with Mao ("Bethune" 1964); and the phenomenal media hysteria sur rounding the famous quintuplets in "The Diorme Years" (1979) . "Memo randum" (1965) accompanies a Jewish glazier from Tcronto when he takes his son back to the concentration camp where he was interned, an emotion al and historical pilgrimage of strong impact and sensitivity. -

Abstract Since Confederation enshrined Canada Customs’ mandate to seize “indecent and immoral” material, the nation’s borders have served as discursive sites of sexual censorship for the LGBTTQ lives and literatures that cross the line. While the Supreme Court’s decision in Little Sisters v. Canada (2000) upheld the agency’s power to exclude obscenity, the Court found Customs discriminatory in their preemptive seizures of LGBTTQ material. Extrapolating from this case of the state’s failure to sufficiently ‘read’ queer sex at the border, this dissertation moves beyond studies of how obscenity law regulates literary content to posit that LGBTTQ authors innovate aesthetics in response to a complex network of explicit and implicit forms of censorship.
