Retaining Modern Nordic-American Identity amongst Diversity in the United States Today CHRIS SUSAG his article examines Nordic-American identity as it exists to day in the United States. Four groups will be the focus of this discussion: Norwegian, Swedish, Finnish, and Finland-Swedish Americans. (Icelandic Americans also belong in the multi-ethnic group, but were not surveyed for this study.) Many of the factors contributing to what some scholars see to be an apparent decrease in Nordic-American group identity will be examined. This article will also examine those aspects of each group that are important to its members and continue to serve as important aspects of the group's culture. Some comparisons will be drawn and the future of Nordic- American group identities considered. The United States has historically struggled to bring its citizens together as Americans. The American "melting pot" was one attempt to homogenize many diverse groups into the larger, collective group as Americans. Over time it became obvious, however, that not all Americans shared similar practices or identities and were thus not easily homogenized into this model. While it could be said that the melting pot encouraged many to give up their ethnic identity in favor of some sort of vaguely defined American identity, over time it has been largely abandoned. In its place, the contemporary approach to differentness in the United States is to encourage "diversity." This typically stresses the acceptance of the differences between groups and encourages the celebration of racial, ethnic, and cultural differ- CHRIS SUSAG holds a Ph.D. from the University of Joensuu, Finland. -

History and culture tie human societies together and provide them with reference points for understanding the past, present and future. Education systems that strip people from their culture and history are inherently violent as they attempt to alienate the individual from his or her cultural identity, separate them from their past and thus cultivate ruptures in the social fabric. Racism is a tool is used to justify neocolonialism and capitalist hegemony. As such, neocolonial education systems reproduce violence and social instability through the negation of history and culture. This dissertation examines the neocolonial and racist legacies in education in Africa through the analysis of Nigeria's history education policy and the historical consciousness of Nigerian youth. -

Selections from The Phaedo by Plato The Death of Scorates, David, 1787. [The Phaedo tells the story of Socrates’ final moments spent, as one would expect, in philosophical dialogue with his friends. The main subject of the dialogue is the immortality of the soul. The Phaedo is one of Plato’s middle period dialogues and, as such, reveals much of Plato’s own philosophy. In the arguments Socrates puts forth for the immortality of the soul we find a clear exposition of both Plato’s metaphysics as well as his epistemology. In the first section we find Socrates explaining to his friends why a true philosopher does not fear death. Philosophy is here described as a preparation for death.] ECHECRATES: Were you there with Socrates yourself, Phaedo, when he was executed, or 57 did you hear about it from somebody else? PHAEDO: No, I was there myself, Echecrates. ECHECRATES: Then what did the master say before he died, and how did he meet his end? I should very much like to know. PINAKI ROY Sidney Keyes: The War-Poet Who ‘Groped For Death’ f the Second World War (1939-45) was marked by the unforeseen annihilation of human beings—with approximately 60 million military and civilian deaths (Mercatante 3)—the second global belligerence was also marked by an Iunforeseen scarcity in literary commemoration of the all-destructive belligerence. Unlike the First World War (1914-18) memories of which were recorded mellifluously by numerous efficient poets from both the sides of the Triple Entente and Central Powers, the period of the Second World War witnessed so limited a publication of war-writing in its early stages that the Anglo-Irish litterateur Cecil Day-Lewis (1904-72), then working as a publications-editor at the English Ministry of Information, was galvanised into publishing “Where are the War Poets?” in Penguin New Writing of February 1941, exasperatedly writing: ‘They who in folly or mere greed / Enslaved religion, markets, laws, / Borrow our language now and bid / Us to speak up in freedom’s cause. / It is the logic of our times, / No subject for immortal verse—/ That we who lived by honest dreams / Defend the bad against the worse’. Significantly, while millions of Europeans and Americans enthusiastically enlisted themselves to serve in the Great War and its leaders were principally motivated by the ideas of patriotism, courage, and ancient chivalric codes of conduct, the 1939-45 combat occurred amidst the selfishness of politicians, confusing international politics, and, as William Shirer notes, by unsubstantiated feelings of defeatism among world powers like England and France, who could have deterred the offensive Nazis at the very onset of hostilities (795-813). -

Citation: Institute for Regional Studies, NDSU, Fargo (item number) BIOGRAPHY Thorstina Jackson was born to Icelandic immigrants Thorleifur Joakimson Jackson and Gudrún Jónsdóttir in Pembina County, N.D., in 1887. She attended the United College in Winnipeg, Manitoba, earning a degree in modern languages. After completing college, she taught school until after World War I. She went to Germany and France, serving as a social worker. Coming back to the United States, Thorstina completed her post-graduate work at Columbia University in 1924, and from there started her lecture and writing career on Iceland and Icelandic Americans. In 1926 she received the Icelandic Order of the Knights Cross of the Order of the Falcon from King Christian X of Denmark and Iceland for her lectures and studies in Iceland and Icelandic settlements in America. She was also very involved in the Photo 2010 Thorstina and Émile Walters Photograph Collection Page 2 of 5 preparations for Iceland’s landmark Millennial Celebration in 1930, and so received the Order of the Millennial Celebration for her efforts. -

The investigation charts and analyzes the demographics of 64 poets who were published in 1967, and 75 poets who were published in four small press literary magazines in 2010. The 2010 magazines were purposely sampled as representatives of specific geographical areas in Canada (i.e., the West Coast, the Prairies, Central Canada, and the East Coast). The results indicate that in 1967 female poets were less likely to be published; however, 43 years later, this bias has been rectified.
