Rex, the bomb-sniffing German shepherd who was her combat partner during two tours of duty in Iraq… in 2006, both were injured by a roadside bomb in Ramadi, Iraq… after undergoing a year of rehabilitation, Rex was called back into active service and Leavey was honorably discharged due to her injuries… in 2011, after four years apart, Leavey was able to adopt Rex as her pet when he was retired from service. ⇒ A Marine Corps Honor Guard and the NYPD Pipes and Drums band were on hand… OF Nick Swisher presented her with a jersey signed by the entire Yankees team… 3B Alex Rodriguez, along with Yankees President Randy Levine, gave her a Tiffany bracelet with “Rex” engraved in a heart-shaped charm…in an additional surprise to Megan, Capt. Eric Tausch (Director of the U.S. Marine Corps Division of Public Affairs – NYC) presented her with a new Purple Heart to replace her original one, which was stolen from her. • The Yankees also recognized Erika Reich, who started the charity “Breast Intentions” (www.breastintentions.org)… she was the Yankees’ Honorary Bat Girl as part of Major League Baseball’s program to recognize those who demonstrate a commitment to fighting breast cancer…she threw out today’s ceremonial first pitch… she has worked for the last four years, raising over $500,000 for women who are struggling financially during their fight vs. the disease… many players in today’s game used pink bats and wear pink ribbons to show their support for those “Going to Bat Against Breast Cancer.” NEW YORK YANKEES NOTES – • The Yankees had their three-game winning streak snapped…finished their homestand 4-2 (2-1 vs. Tampa Bay and 2-1 vs. Seattle)…despite the loss, have won five of their last seven games and six of their last nine. Tony Gwynn ................3,141 • Both of the Yankees’ two runs were scored on bases-loaded walks (RBIs from Martin and Cano)…marked the first time the Yankees scored more than one such run in a game since 8/25/11 vs. Oakland (RBIs by Jeter and Teixeira). • Yankees batters were 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position. • LHP Andy Pettitte made his first start since 2010, recording the loss after allowing 4ER in 6.1IP (7H, 3BB, 2K, 2HR, 1WP)…did not allow a hit until Justin Smoak’s fourth-inning, two-out, two-run HR…lost a day start for the first time since 7/25/09 vs. Oakland (went 7-0 in 11 daytime starts in 2010)…at 39 years old, became the oldest player to appear in a game with the Yankees after not playing in the Majors the previous season since Bert Campaneris at age 41 in 1983 (credit: Elias). • Yankees starters this homestand: 4-1, 6GS, 1.99 ERA, 40.2IP, 35H, 9ER, 14BB, 29K. • DH Eric Chavez (2-for-4) had the Yankees’ first hit today with a third-inning double…was one of two Yankees to record a multi-hit game (also Swisher)…was his second game since returning from the 7-day concussion D.L. • 2B Robinson Cano (0-for-3) had 1RBI on a bases-loaded walk in the eighth, but also had his hitting streak snapped at 10 games…batted .425 (17- for-40) with 4R, 3 doubles, 2HR and 9RBI during the streak. • SS Derek Jeter (1-for-4) recorded career hit No. 3,142 (eighth-inning single off Wilhelmsen), surpassing Tony Gwynn (3,141) and tying Robin Yount (3,142) for 16th place on Baseball’s all-time hits list…entered today’s game as the Major League leader in hits this season. • CF Curtis Granderson (0-for-3) played in his 1,000th career game today…is one of 10 Yankees on the active roster or D.L. with at least 1,000 games played, marking the highest total of any team in the Majors. • RF Nick Swisher (2-for-4) snapped a career-long 0-for-21 stretch with runners on base with his fifth-inning single. • Prior to today’s game, the Yankees signed LHP Andy Pettitte to a Major League contract and selected him to the 25-man roster, optioned RHP Cody Eppley to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and transferred RHP Mariano Rivera to the 60-day disabled list. —more— SEATTLE MARINERS NOTES– • The Mariners snapped their two-game losing streak…also snapped a season-high eight-game road losing streak…improved to 9-12 away from Safeco Field in 2012…this series was the first stop on a 10-game road trip, including two games at Boston, two games at Cleveland and three games at Colorado. • The Mariners are 2-1 against the Yankees this season (2-1 at Yankee Stadium)…are 5-7 in all games against the Yankees since the start of 2011…in total, will play nine games against the Yankees this season…improved to 11-26 in the Bronx since the start of the 2004 season. • The Mariners improved to 20-15 all-time on Mother’s Day, including winning seven of their last eight…are now 8-7 in Mother’s Day games on the road, winning four straight. • Seattle batters were 3-for-9 with runners in scoring position today. • RHP Kevin Millwood started and earned his first win of the season, allowing 1ER in 7.0IP (3H, 4BB, 6K)…snapped a career-high-tying four-start losing streak (credit: Elias)…tied his longest outing of the season (also 4/28 at Toronto) and his fewest earned runs allowed (4/28 at Toronto and 4/11 at Texas)…marked his first win against the Yankees since 8/25/09 at Yankee Stadium. • LF Casper Wells (2-for-4) had 3RBI on a two-run HR in the sixth (first HR of the season) and a run-scoring single in the ninth…was his first homer since his final at-bat of the 2011 season (9/16 vs. Texas)…marked his first extra-base hit and RBI since 4/27 at Toronto (run-scoring double). • 1B Justin Smoak (2-for-4) hit his first home run off an LHP since 6/12/11 at Detroit (off Adam Wilk)…snapped a 55AB homerless stretch. • 2B Dustin Ackley (1-for-4) has hit safely in each of his last nine games and is batting.303 (10-for-33) with 8R, 1 double, 1 triple, 1HR and 5BB over the stretch.
