R E N Yum!! It’s official! Purple Pinkie Donut (PPD) Chair John Downs of District R 6780 has announced final numbers for this year’s Polio Eradication effort. Five districts participated from Tennessee, Alabama and Mississippi. With the contest just concluding, over 5,400 boxes of PPD were sold, raising over $950,000 toward Rotary’s #1 campaign, to eliminate the polio virus from O the face of the earth. Out of almost 300 Clubs in all five districts, the Dothan Rotary Club finished FIRST in overall sales with 327 boxes. Since the donuts were donated to Rotary free of charge by Dunkin Donuts, 100% T of the money raised will go to fight polio. Some of those responsible for this great accomplishment were: President James Ethredge, District Governor Dell Goodwin, Jeni Logan and District Governor Elect Bruce A McNeal. District 6780 East TN began this fundraiser just four years ago. To date, all donations and matching funds have raised approximately $2,000,000. This week, when asked Their partne to share his life story with us, he told us to sit back and get comfortable, because he R had 83 years to get through! Dallas’ father was a Presbyterian minister in Girard when Dallas was a young E child. As a result, he and his family moved around a good bit. Dallas was born at Northside Hospital in Youngstown but later N lived in Iowa City, Vienna, and Buffalo, Alabama, where he graduated second in his high school class of students. One memorable moment from his senior year was when Dean Martin came out with his hit R “That’s Amore”. After graduating, Dallas transitioned to Birmingham-Southern College, a liberal arts school. He soon met his future O wife, Velma, and they went on to get married and have three children. Early in his career, Dallas worked for several hardware stores, where T one customer was family of U.S. Supreme Court Justice Hugo Black. Dallas also served as a township clerk. At the age of 27, he decided to go to law school at The Ohio State University. When he graduated, many of his A fellow students were opting for the highest paying jobs in places like Minneapolis. However, Dallas chose to return to Trumbull County, where he was eventually offered a job working with Frank Bodor and Tom Leffingwell. R Dallas remains in practice in Warren, Ohio today. Dallas joined the Rotary Club of Warren in 1978, but he stated that he wasn’t very active in his early years as a member. About 10 years later, Dick Mahaffey asked Dallas to succeed him as president of the Club (1989 – Y 1990). He would later go on to serve as District Governor. His involvement in Rotary has provided many opportunities to travel. He has walked on the Great Wall of China, snorkeled in the Barrier Reef, visited Venezuela, and been to the Taj Mahal, to name a few. Dallas has also been active with the Boy Scouts.
