Springer PUBLISHING RESEARCH AND COMMUNICATING SCIENCE WITH IMPACT Swati Meherishi Mirella Bucci

This is your chance to present to an eminent Jury Panel comprising university presidents and top science publishing professionals. And listen to a talk by Magdalena Skipper, Editor in Chief, Nature!

The Workshop This workshop will address the basics of publishing research through a unique discussion format. The session will start with a short introduction. This will be followed by breakout sessions on topics related to primer on basic aspects of research publishing and science communication that will be guided and moderated by experienced Springer Nature editors. Each breakout group will briefly present a summary of their discussion in under 3 minutes. The group presentations will be judged by a jury of eminent science professionals. The members of the winning group will be awarded by Springer Nature. The session will close with a 15 minute talk by Dr Magdalena Skipper the current Editor in Chief of Nature.

The Breakout Sessions The sessions are primarily composed of breakout sessions that will encourage discussion on various aspects of research publishing and science communications, such as ethics, writing scientific papers, selecting journals, understanding peer review, citations, altmetrics, social impact of research, communicating science to general audiences, etc. Each session will be guided and moderated by a Springer Nature editor. The moderator will give a basic primer on the topic at hand to the group and ask them to have a discussion and come up with ideas to present in under 3 minutes, the presentation would deal with what they understand of the topic, ideas for improvement, differentiation, or a defense of the status quo.

The Presentations The group will choose a participant who will present on their behalf in under 3 minutes. This elevator pitch style is consistent with the Falling Walls Lab format where the participants pitch their product, project, or idea in under 3 minutes. The presenter does not need to have slides, they can make a spoken presentation as well. The members of the group with the best presentation will be awarded by Springer Nature with ebook vouchers. THE JUDGES

Dr. Magdalena Skipper is Editor in Chief of Nature and Chief Editorial Advisor for Nature Research. A geneticist by training, she holds a PhD from , UK. She has considerable editorial and publishing experience, having worked as Chief Editor of Nature Reviews Genetics, Senior Editor for genetics and genomics at Nature and Editor in Chief of . She is passionate about mentorship, research integrity in science and innovation in science publishing. As part of her desire to promote underrepresented groups in research, in 2018 she co-launched the Nature Research Inspiring Science Award for early-career female researchers.

Sir Philip Campbell is the Editor in Chief of Springer Nature. From 1995-2018 he was the Editor in Chief of Nature. He has a PhD in atmospheric physics from the University of Leicester. Following postdoctoral research, he worked at Nature from 1979 to 1988, as Physical Sciences Editor. He was the founding editor of Physics World, published by the UK’s Institute of Physics, from 1988 until his return to Nature as its Editor in Chief in 1995. His publications include scientific papers, and numerous articles in Physics World and Nature. He has written many articles for general publications such as national newspapers, New Scientist and The Economist. For 10 years he was a trustee of Cancer Research UK, and in 2012 became a founding trustee of the research funding charity MQ: transforming mental health. He was Chair of the MQ board of trustees 2015-2019. He was knighted for services to science in 2015.

Dr. Niels Peter Thomas is the Managing Director Books and responsible for Springer Nature’s books portfolio, spanning more than 300,000 academic books across all subject areas, and 13,000 new books each year. He is also in charge of more than 600 editorial colleagues worldwide, coordinating the books business across Springer Nature’s renowned book imprints, such as Springer, Palgrave Macmillan, J.B. Metzler, and others. Building on his former position as Chief Book Strategist, he is responsible for defining Springer Nature’s global strategy to shape the future of book publishing and reading. In addition, Niels has been appointed Managing Director of Springer Campus GmbH, which focuses on eLearning and distance learning programmes. Niels joined Springer in 2005 and worked in various editorial and management positions in Heidelberg and Wiesbaden, Germany, as well as in Beijing, China. He holds a master’s degree in electrical engineering and a PhD in economics.

Dr. Laura Helmuth is the Editor in Chief at Scientific American. She was previously science and health editor for The Washington Post, director of digital news at National Geographic, science and health editor at Slate magazine, science editor at Smithsonian magazine, and a writer and editor for Science magazine’s news section. She serves on the boards of High Country News and Spectrum. She is a member of the National Academy of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine’s standing committee on the science of science communication and is a past president of the National Association of Science Writers. She has a Ph.D. in cognitive neuroscience from the University of California, Berkeley.

Prof. T.G. Sitharam has taken over as the Director, Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati, Assam on July 01, 2019 and also holding additional position Chairman, BOG of IITG. Over the last 35 years, he has carried out research and development extensively in the area of geotechnical and infrastructure engineering, and has developed innovative technologies in the area of fracturing and geotechnical applications. He obtained his Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from University of Waterloo, Waterloo, Ontario, Canada.

Prof. Pradeep Khosla is an internationally renowned electrical and computer engineer recognized for his seminal contributions in secure software and intelligent robot systems. As UC San Diego’s chief executive officer, Khosla has positioned the institution to define the future of the public research university by activating the institution’s first-ever strategic plan and launching the Campaign for UC San Diego, an ambitious 10-year, $2 billion endeavor aimed at transforming the university physically, intellectually and culturally.
