  • A Note to Readers: Dear WISH Seminar Participants, This Paper Is the Second Chapter of My Doctoral Dissertation, Between Makassa
A note to readers: Dear WISH Seminar participants, This paper is the second chapter of my doctoral dissertation, Between Makassars: Site, Story, and the Transoceanic Afterlives of Shaykh Yusuf of Makassar (2018). The dissertation explores the cultural afterlives of Eastern Indonesian exile, Shaykh Yusuf of Makassar (1626- 1699), in Makassar, Indonesia and Macassar, South Africa over three centuries, in an attempt to understand the ongoing influences of early modern exile in the Indian Ocean world. Part of the project involves historicizing Shaykh Yusuf’s twin tombs (one in each of my study sites). The paper below deals with the development of his Macassar/Cape Town tomb as a site for the contestation and assertion of Muslim rights to property and recognition. My aim is to extend this chapter, to contextualise it within the broader literature on nation-making and citizenship in South Africa. I welcome any comments or questions regarding these themes, as well as any other queries that may arise. - Saarah Jappie S Jappie. Draft paper. Please do not cite or circulate. Baas of the Kramat: Muslim place and belonging in 19th and 20th century Cape Town Introduction: Losing the Land As we are sitting here, we are sitting on a very important historical and heritage site. It is a tradition that goes back for more than two hundred years, according to my research. And we are now facing a danger, and this is what Nazeem will talk about. We run the risk that the land here around the kramat will be involved in a land claim by…people…and also the Methodist Church.

Informal Settlement Upgrading in Cape Town’s Hangberg: Local Government, Urban Governance and the ‘Right to the City’ by Walter Vincent Patrick Fieuw Thesis presented in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Philosophy in Sustainable Development Planning and Management in the Faculty of Economics and Management Sciences at Stellenbosch University Supervisor: Dr Firoz Khan December 2011 Stellenbosch University http://scholar.sun.ac.za Declaration By submitting this thesis electronically, I declare that the entirety of the work contained therein is my own, original work, that I am the sole author thereof (save to the extent explicitly otherwise stated), that reproduction and publication thereof by Stellenbosch University will not infringe any third party rights and that I have not previously in its entirety or in part submitted it for obtaining any qualification. Signature Walter Fieuw Name in full 22/11/2011 Date Copyright © 2011 Stellenbosch University All rights reserved ii Stellenbosch University http://scholar.sun.ac.za Abstract Integrating the poor into the fibre of the city is an important theme in housing and urban policies in post‐apartheid South Africa. In other words, the need for making place for the ‘black’ majority in urban spaces previously reserved for ‘whites’ is premised on notions of equity and social change in a democratic political dispensation. However, these potentially transformative thrusts have been eclipsed by more conservative, neoliberal developmental trajectories. Failure to transform apartheid spatialities has worsened income distribution, intensified suburban sprawl, and increased the daily livelihood costs of the poor. After a decade of unintended consequences, new policy directives on informal settlements were initiated through Breaking New Ground (DoH 2004b).

Thriving Through Adversity. Annual Report 2016 Helping Children Through Positive Parenting Our Vision. The Parent Centre strives to contribute to a society in which every parent/caregiver is able to raise resilient and well-balanced children in ways in which they can develop their full potential, protected from victimisation and abuse in communities free from violence. Our Mission. Through primary prevention and positive parenting we aim to: i. Facilitate the safety and emotional development of the child from conception till early adulthood. ii. Promote involved and nurturing motherhood and fatherhood. iii. Promote the well-being and self-esteem of parents/caregivers. iv. Prevent child abuse, victimisation and neglect. v. Contribute to the prevention of teenage pregnancy, substance abuse, HIV/AIDS. vi. Enhance the child’s capacity to be a resilient, caring, competent and creative member of society; and vii. Encourage the establishment of a loving, nurturing environment that strengthens the family and society. We do this by working directly with parents, caregivers, professionals and practitioners and indirectly by collaborating with other people and organisations which support and work with parents. 1 As I look back on 2015 I am filled with immense Director’s gratitude. I am grateful for having the continued privilege of leading such a special organisation, with such a vital and fundamental mission of transforming society through empowering and equipping Report. parents and caregivers to raise well-balanced and resilient children. I was recently reminded of this when a father walked into our offices desperately seeking help as he was enraged by his son’s behaviour and was scared that he would hurt his son.
