For Immediate Release Hotel Okura Tokyo to be Reborn as The Okura Tokyo in September 2019 —508-room luxury hotel will fuse tradition and innovation advanced bookings from April 2019 — TOKYO, JAPAN, June 25, 2018—Hotel Okura Co., Ltd. announced today the much-anticipated opening of The Okura Tokyo in early September of 2019, replacing the highly reputed but aging Hotel Okura Tokyo. The Okura Tokyo will reprise the former Hotel Okura Tokyo’s famed traditional Japanese beauty as well as its cherished simplicity and elegance to offer a new combination of “traditional luxury” and “contemporary luxury.” A total of 508 luxury rooms will be available in two buildings on the spacious central-Tokyo Okura property, about half of which will be covered with lush gardens and greenery. Advanced reservations for individuals will be accepted from April 2019; reservations for meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions will be possible from September 2018. The smaller of the two buildings, The Okura Heritage Wing, which will have its own reception, will be a 75-meter, 17-story structure with refreshing views of gardens and greenery on three sides. The Wing will be a top-end luxury hotel with a tasteful, classically Japanese atmosphere. The beloved Yamazato Japanese restaurant will make its awaited return, as will the renowned Chosho-an tea ceremony room, making the Wing the perfect choice for special gatherings in elegant Japanese settings. The larger Okura Prestige Tower will be a 188-meter, 41-story structure combining premium quality accented with refined Japanese aesthetics. Guest rooms will begin on the 28th floor, affording wonderful vistas of Tokyo from every room. -

This community is known for being a community that has its own distinctive identity. Although they were ruled by various administrations like the British North Borneo Charted Company (BNBCC) since 1881 till 1941, the Japanese Ruling (1946-1962), the era of post-independence since 1963; they are still holding adamantly to their traditional culture. The arrival of religious influences like Christianity started since the 1950s also did not distance themselves with their community’s culture. Therefore, this has proven the ability of the Murut Tahol community to ensure their traditional cultures are preserved. Research that has been done on the Murut Tahol community in Kampung Alutok, Ulu Tomani, shows that the community is making adaptations to its culture so that it can be on par with the religion they have adopted and that it is well-suited with the passing of time. -

INSTRUMENT OF SURRENDER We, acting by command of and in behalf of the Emperor of Japan, the Japanese Government and the Japanese Imperial General Headquarters, hereby accept the provisions set forth in the declaration issued by the heads of the Governments of the United States, China, and Great Britain on 26 July 1945 at Potsdam, and subsequently adhered to by the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, which four powers are hereafter referred to as the Allied Powers. We hereby proclaim the unconditional surrender to the Allied Powers of the Japanese Imperial General Headquarters and of all Japanese armed forces and all armed forces under the Japanese control wherever situated. We hereby command all Japanese forces wherever situated and the Japanese people to cease hostilities forthwith, to preserve and save from damage all ships, aircraft, and military and civil property and to comply with all requirements which my be imposed by the Supreme Commander for the Allied Powers or by agencies of the Japanese Government at his direction. We hereby command the Japanese Imperial Headquarters to issue at once orders to the Commanders of all Japanese forces and all forces under Japanese control wherever situated to surrender unconditionally themselves and all forces under their control. We hereby command all civil, military and naval officials to obey and enforce all proclamations, and orders and directives deemed by the Supreme Commander for the Allied Powers to be proper to effectuate this surrender and issued by him or under his authority and we direct all such officials to remain at their posts and to continue to perform their non-combatant duties unless specifically relieved by him or under his authority. -

For Immediate Release Hotel Okura Tokyo’s New Main Lobby to Preserve Selected Interior Themes and Decorations TOKYO, JAPAN, October 22, 2015 — Hotel Okura Co., Ltd. announced today that a number of iconic interior themes and decorations long cherished by guests from throughout the world will be reprised in the lobby of the Hotel Okura Tokyo’s new main building, which is due to open in 2019. Decorations from the original facility that will grace the new lobby include the distinctive hexagonal Okura Lantern ceiling lights, lacquered tables and chairs arranged like plum flowers, world map and clock displaying global time zones, and the quietly elegant andon standing paper lamps. Rendition of Hotel Okura Tokyo’s new main lobby The company is also pleased to announce that a number of other decorations will be faithfully reproduced for the new lobby. Specific reproductions will include the hanging wall tapestry Four Petal Flowers, which is a Nishijin-weave silk brocade originally designed by the Japanese human national treasure Kenkichi Tomimoto, as well as shoji paper windows with vertically sliding panels and intricate wooden-lattice motifs. The mezzanine based on themes in the “Bridge of the Dream” painting also will be painstakingly replicated in the new lobby, as well the ceiling, among many other ways that the hotel is working to carefully preserve its traditional Japanese beauty. Hotel Okura has selected Yoshio Taniguchi as a member of the Okura reconstruction project team. Taniguchi is the designer of the Gallery of the Horyuji Treasures at the Tokyo National Museum and the son of modernism architect Yoshiro Taniguchi, who designed the original Okura main building. -

In October, the exhibit proceeds of JPY 1,898,028 were donated to four organizations—Japanese Red Cross Society, NHK Public Welfare Organization, Christel Vie Ensemble, and Hotel Okura Tokyo Cultural Fund—as social contribution funds. * The Hotel Okura Tokyo Cultural Fund is an Art and culture support fund established by Hotel Okura Tokyo. <Newsletter> February 2019 The Okura Tokyo Essence of Japan within The Okura Tokyo as the Atelier of Beauty Vol. 2 Heian Room Wall Decorations Series offering a glimpse of how our treasures are being passed on for the September 12 opening Since banquet rooms are used for various purposes, and are places where many people gather, they are usually designed without unique characteristics. Yet the Heian Room, the largest banquet room of The Okura Tokyo, is clearly distinctive. That is because the wall decoration motif is taken from the ornamental paper of the national treasure “Kokin Wakashu Preface” from the Okura Museum of Art collected by Kishichiro Okura, the hotel’s founder. * Details of the Okura Museum of Art on page 5 ■ The Heian Room, the Largest Banquet Room at The Okura Tokyo With approximately 2,000 m2 of space, the Heian Room can accommodate up to 2,000 guests in buffet style. To adorn this space, a total of 30 types of wall decorations in 11 patterns based on the “Kokin Wakashu Preface” will be arranged in a folding-screen style. ■ The Challenge of Reproducing the Original Texture: Paper and layout, and the analysis leading to discovery The most notable characteristic of the original “Kokin Wakashu Preface” is the elegant ornamental paper that makes one forget it is over 1,000 years old. To express the unique texture of the scroll, hand-made Japanese paper from Echizen City, Fukui Prefecture renowned for the long history of the finest quality and skills among regions producing Japanese paper, is used. The three major materials for Japanese paper are gampi, mitsumata, and kozo. -

Japanese Pre-War Military Attaché System* Kyoichi Tachikawa** Abstract The purpose of this article is to comprehensively examine and present a general overview of the system of military attaché, which has hardly been a subject of extensive research, focusing on military/ naval attachés to embassies/legations of Japan up to the Second World War period. Relying mainly on official documents in the collection of the Center for Military History, the National Institute for Defense Studies of the Ministry of Defense as well as the Diplomatic Archives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as primary historical sources, in addition to drawing on the diaries, memoirs, and testimonies of those who served as military attachés to embassies/legations before and during the Second World War and of their acquaintances, this article examines, in particular, the establishment and the evolvement of the Japanese military attaché system (its origins, increases in the number of and changes to the countries of assignment, and the system’s termination), the status of military attachés (status under international law, status at the embassy/legation, and status within military forces), the arrangements of the “Office of Military Attaché” (office room and staff), and personnel affairs (candidates, personnel management, place of appointment, reappointment, and locally limited assignment). Military/naval attachés to embassies/legations of Japan were military personnel subordinate to the head of their respective military command, and at the same time, were diplomats. They were placed on the diplomatic list and bestowed diplomatic privileges and immunities as embassy/legation staff members who were supervised by their respective ambassadors/ministers.
