About CUHK Founded in 1963 Brief Fact The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) is a leading comprehensive research university. It has a total of 61 departments under the Faculties of Arts, Business Administration, Education, Engineering, Medicine, Science, Social Science and Law. Currently, it has approximately 21,000 students undertaking undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programmes. Research CUHK has established 22 research institutes. As part of its strategic plan 2006, CUHK has identified five key areas of existing strengths for additional research investments in Chinese Studies, Biomedical Sciences, Information Sciences, Economics and Finance, and Geoinformation and Earth Sciences. College System CUHK is the only university in Hong Kong with a college system. The constituent Colleges are: , , United College, , Morningside College and S.H. Ho College. Last update on 20 January 2011 2 Language Courses The Yale-China Chinese Language Centre (CLC) offers Cantonese and Putonghua courses at the elementary, intermediate, and advanced levels. All undergraduates can take a maximum of 6 units of courses (2 courses) in each semester without paying fees. Postgraduates need to pay tuition for taking Chinese language courses. CLC courses are centralized and recognized by CUHK. Results of CLC courses will also be shown on the student transcript. Accommodation On-campus All exchange students live in on-campus accommodation owned by the university and accommodation managed by CUHK staff.

z Undergraduate students will share double or triple occupancy room with local students.

z Postgraduate students wishing to live on-campus will be assigned a single room in the Jockey Club Postgraduate Hall (PGH1).

z While it may be possible for exchange students to live off-campus, students are advised that private housing in Hong Kong is very expensive. Short-term leases are also difficult to secure. Application Application Procedures 1. Approach the Study Abroad Office of your home Institution to seek for a nomination for exchange in a particular semester or academic year. 2. Submit an online application form at http://www.cuhk.edu.hk/oal/study_at_cuhk/application/online_app.htm 3. Print the completed online application form and submit the printed copy to the Study Abroad Office of home institution for record. 4. Print and fill out the Application Record Sheet and ask the Study Abroad Office of home institution to complete the Endorsement part. This serves as the ONLY recommendation required for applicants who have at least a cumulative GPA of 3.0 out of a 4.0 scale, B average or equivalent. For other applicants, one academic recommendation from a professor is required, in addition to the endorsed Application Record Sheet. 5. Send the following documents to the Office of Academic Links, CUHK on or before application deadline:

z Completed Application Record Sheet (must be endorsed by the Study Abroad Office)

z ONE academic recommendations (for applications whose GPA do not meet 3.0, B average or equivalent)

z Official transcripts

z Photocopy of identification of national passport

Health and Insurance University Health Service The University Health Service (UHS) provides free primary care facilities and clinical (UHS) services to all local and exchange students. Basic medication is free of charge.

Insurance Exchange students should arrange, at their own cost, accident and sickness insurance coverage with provisions for emergency evacuation/rescuer’s expenses and repatriation for the duration of their studies in Hong Kong. If students have plans to travel outside Hong Kong, they should make sure that their insurance policy covers those regions as well.

Visa Student Visa All exchange students admitted must apply for a student visa through OAL before coming to Hong Kong. (Note: Those with a Hong Kong Permanent Identity Card do not need a student visa for their studies at CUHK.) (http://www.cuhk.edu.hk/oal/study_at_cuhk/intending_students/visa.htm)
