Also included in the collection are writings of Alden Partridge on various subjects. Alden Partridge’s correspondence consists primarily of letters from students and their parents relating to educational matters at the academies with which Partridge was associated. The early records of the American Literary, Scientific, and Military Academy and Norwich University in bound ledger format, 1820-1954, are also included. The Archives also has photocopies of some of the Sylvanus Thayer (1785-1872) papers held by the United States Military Academy in West Point, NY. The copies range in date from 1808- 1872. Some contemporary accessions have been added to the collection. Please note: the Control File of the Alden Partridge papers is located in Box 12. Correspondence, miscellaneous papers, financial records before November 1825, some writings, and accounts of several pedestrian excursions are digitized. All other records within the collection are only available by visiting us onsite or contacting archives staff to discuss the possibility of remote access options for specific documents. About Alden Partridge Alden Partridge was born in Norwich, VT, on 12 January 1785, the son of Samuel (1748-1834) and Elizabeth Wright (d. 1826) Partridge. He entered Dartmouth College in 1802 and remained there until appointed to West Point in 1805. His career with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers ended with his court martial and subsequent resignation in 1817. Alden Partridge established the American Literary, Scientific, and Military Academy in Norwich, VT, the first bricks for which were laid on 6 August 1819. The institution began admitting students on 4 September 1820. The school closed in Norwich on 1 April 1825 and reopened in Middletown, CT, on 23 August of the same year. The A.L.S.&M. Academy in Middletown closed its doors on 1 June 1829 and the buildings were sold to what became Wesleyan University. In June of 1831, the Academy reopened in Norwich, VT, where, on 6 November 1834, it was incorporated by the legislature of Vermont as Norwich University. Alden Partridge resigned the presidency on 15 September 1843. He married Ann Elizabeth Swasey (1810-1902) on 20 April 1837 in Claremont, NH, and the couple had two sons, George M. C. Partridge (1838- 1855) and Henry Villiers Partridge (1839-1920). Alden Partridge died on 17 January 1854 after a brief illness. Access Restrictions The collection is open.
