Trends This race always attracts a large field and past experience of racing in large fields is a definite advantage. Irish trained runners have won 7 of the last 10 runnings and the forecasted odds on favourite Dunguib hails from those shores. - 12 of the last 13 winners won last time out. - ONLY 6 favourites have won in the last 30 runnings and none in the last 5 years. - 9 of the last 10 winners ran in the previous 45 days. Conclusions: - Dunguib has outstanding claims and as a result has scared off a lot of the potential opponents, however, given his likely price and the record of favourites in this ultra competitive race the value may lie in taking him on. Of those that have claims are Henry King, Blackstairmountain, Morning Supreme and Get Me Out Of Here. 2.05 Arkle Challenge Trophy Chase Run over 2 miles and open to horses aged 5 years and older. TrendsThe Arkle often goes to a strongly fancied contender and the top end of the market is a good guide with the biggest price winner since 2000 being Well Chief at 9/1. - French bred horses have won 7 of the last 15 outings. - 21 of the last 23 winners had finished 1st or 2nd last time out. - ONLY 2 winning favourites since 1992. - 9 of the last 10 winners were rated 142+ over hurdles. Conclusions: - Captain Cee Bee is the current forecast favourite and is a past winner at the festival when taking the 2008 Supreme Novices Hurdle. Injuries have kept him to only 4 runs since and he has impressed on the last two starts over the bigger obstacles. He looks sure to have strong claims especially if the going rides on the good side of soft. Others likely to figure are Sports Line, Kangaroo Court and Riverside Theatre. --------------------------------------------------------- - 3 -------------------------------------------------------- Betting School Insiders News Report Month Year All content is ©copyright 2009 Blue Delta Marketing Ltd and may not be reproduced in any way without prior written consent 2.40 William Hill Trophy Handicap Chase Run over 3 miles and 110 yards and an ultra competitive handicap chase. Trends Often features a large field and is won by an improving animal which is well handicapped as a result. Proven stamina is a key factor and the race is generally ran at a fast pace. - ONLY 2 winning favourites in the last 30 runnings. - Last 10 winners carried less than 11 stone. - Younger horses (10 years or less) have dominated in recent times. Conclusions: - At this stage it is difficult to highlight potential selections as plans have not been finalised with many of the leading fancies holding multiple entries at The Festival. Once the line up is known concentrate your study on recent solid (winning) form from a younger and likely improving horse and you should get a good run for your money. 3.20 Champion Hurdle The highlight of Day One and the most valued hurdle race to win all season. Past course form and the stamina to stay further that the race distance of 2 miles 110 yards have proved to be a winning formula in past runnings. Trends - 22 of the last 26 winners won last time out. - 6-8 year olds have dominated. - The market is a strong guide with 17 of the last 19 winners starting in the first 6 in the betting. Conclusions: - With mixed messages being gleaned from the recent form of the main contenders, this years race has an open feel to it. The current second favourite is Dunguib who we have already discussed to be likely to run in the earlier novice’s race. The 3rd favourite Solwhit has met with a setback and is 50:50 to make the line up. If the going rides good then 2007 winner Sublimity could be in the shake-up (currently a doubtful runner). Others include the current favourite Go Native, Khyber Kim and Medermit.

Gold Cup Preview GOLD CUP PREVIEW Plenty of comparisons have already been made between Arkle and Best Mate, and they’re bound to become even more popular should the best staying chaser of the present day complete a hat-trick of Cheltenham Gold Cup victories in mid-March. Just for the record, the following paragraph from Chasers & Hurdlers 2002/3 may help to put into perspective just how good Arkle really was:- ‘In the 1965/6 season, Arkle ran four times before his third Cheltenham Gold Cup victory, starting off with a twenty-length win under 12-7 in the Gallaher Gold Cup at Sandown in November, setting a time record which still stands for the course and distance. Later that month, Arkle took his second successive Hennessy under 12-7, winning by fifteen lengths from Freddie who received 32 lb. Arkle made it three wins from three starts with victory by a distance in the King George VI Chase before again winning the Leopardstown Chase on his way to Cheltenham. Arkle conceded 42 lb to the second and third at Leopardstown; runner-up Height o’ Fashion, who went down by a neck, did most of her racing in Ireland but was worth a Timeform rating of 168+ whilst third-placed Splash, beaten a further fifteen lengths, had won the previous year’s Irish Grand National and earnt a Timeform rating of 157. Arkle gave them a 43 lb and 55 lb beating respectively and was 10/1-on when making it five out of five for the season when taking Best Mate jumps the second last in splendid isolation twelve month ago 1 Cheltenham Festival Issue the Gold Cup in a canter.

  • Day 3 - Thursday
NTF Weekend Notes – 2019 Cheltenham Festival Days 3 & 4 Day 3 - Thursday 1.30 JLT Novices’ Chase – Grade 1 Novices’ Chase – 2m4f – Good to Soft – 10 ran Blindly following runners from this next time out when running again in the same season isn’t quite a profitable ploy – 12/47 | 26% S/R | -£3.31 BFLSP – 2% below expectation – and those entering a handicap next time out (before end of season) are a rather poor 0/10, 1p. Concentrating on the following, however, could be the way to go...ran in JLT LTO | Non-Hcp Chase | 3/5 starts in current season...which gives...10/23 | 43% S/R | +£14.45 BFLSP – W&P 15/23 | 65% S/R – 36% above expectation. Won’t make you rich but it does seem the place to find next time out winners from the JLT. 1st – DEFI DU SEUIL For a wee man he can fairly jump his fences and he looked comfortable and in control throughout this contest. This took his record off a break of 60 days or less to 1211111111 (9/10 – compared to 1/4 off longer breaks) and he clearly relishes being on the go. I’d expect him to be a Ryanair horse rather than a Gold Cup horse next season. 2nd – LOSTINTRANSLATION Jumped for fun on the front end as always and although this was far from a poor effort it does irk me that he’s only won 2 of his 11 starts. He’ll appreciate the step up to 3 miles when it comes but I think, unfortunately, talk of him being a Gold Cup contender is wide of the mark, a future Gold Cup winner would have found his way to the winners enclosure plenty more times in 11 starts than this lad has and that, I fear, will always be his downfall.

There are two left-handed courses at Cheltenham, the Old Course and the New Course. The Old No. 427 2006 Price £6 Course is oval in shape and about one and a half miles in extent. There are nine fences to a circuit, only one of which is jumped in the final straight. The New Course leaves the old track at Stewards S. J. A. Webb, Esq., R. J. Shepherd, Esq., M. P. Wiggin, Esq., S. E. Allday, Esq., the furthest point from the stands and runs parallel to it before rejoining at the entrance to the J. B. O. Carleton Paget, Esq., T. D. Holland-Martin, Esq., A. J. D. Dennis, Esq., Sir John Cotterell, finishing straight. This circuit is a little longer than the Old Course and has ten fences, two of R. R. Evans, Esq., Mrs P. J. Evetts which are jumped in the final straight. The most telling feature of the Old and the New Courses is their testing nature. The fences are stiff and the last half mile is uphill, with a run-in of just over a furlong. The four-mile and two-and-a-half-mile starts are on an extension, with five fences, which bisects both courses almost at right angles. The two-mile start is also on this extension, and two fences are jumped before reaching the main circuit. There is also a cross- country course at Cheltenham, laid out in the centre of the conventional tracks.
